Why it's never wrong to say Merry Christmas.

Many people say that there are so many religious holidays in December, we should never say Merry Christmas but rather happy holidays. I don't agree although I believe that all holidays should be treated equally. Christmas, the 25th of December, has been sit aside to celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ and it should be called Christmas. I don't think that anyone should be offended by that anymore than celebrating any other religious holidays. We live in a free country, where members of all religions can practice their faith without fear. To all those who celebrate Christmas, I wish you a very Merry Christmas. Blessings.

Merry Christmas to you too. I say Merry Christmas and if anybody says they don't believe or they are Jewish or whatever, I just say Merry Christmas to them again.

I admit that when I do a lot of greetings online (not off!) I will always put Happy Christmas/holiday just in case someone I am responding to doesn't celebrate Christmas, so it covers me and I think it's kind of respectful. Sadly you hear of so many companies mainly in the UK that forbid staff to put up decorations or call it Christmas and there have even been cases where staff were NOT allowed to send cards with Christmas on them. It does go too far, sure respect religions and all faiths we are all different but to come down heavy handed on one particular faith because of fear of upsetting others causes a lot of bad feeling and even those that do not celebrate Christmas do not want to be singled out just because they have a different faith. So to all my friends on Mylot and your lovely self a very Merry Christmas/Holiday and a very successful, healthy and happy 2010.

Hi wolfie: I think that's what we all have to do and I'll start doing like you do, just to include all faiths. I try my best to respect every phylosophy including people that don't have any faith at all just because I think I should be tolerant and don't try to make every person looks like me. Basically I think that's a good way to show respect to all faiths. Thanks for your answer. Hope you are having a nice day. Merry Christmas/ Happy Holidays.

Hi pose,
That is a wonderful messages and the diversity of different celebration is inherent throughout the world and everyone should respect and understand tradition as it held in the past which are practice up to this day. Definitely would never banish as it remind us of who we are and what human races should be thankful for the gracious events which happen thousand of years ago deeply remember as way to thanks all the creator for his wonderful miracles of life and for his sacrifices. It is like paying back to honor Him on his birthday. Merry Christmas to you too..

Hi Pose: I agree with you when you say that nobody should be offended if we show our Christian beleives and it's nothing against the other holidays. Some people could say Happy Holidays but I always says Merry Christmas simply because that's what i am celebrating, that's what made this month special to me and I think you think the same way I do. Thanks for your answer. Hope you are having a nice day. Merry Christmas!

I'd say both Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. If someone doesn't take Christmas as a holiday, why spam them saying you should be bla bla bla? I would just respond saying "oh then, well Happy Holidays!"

I wish you a Merry Christmas too. I agree with you that Political Correctness has gone too far. It is mostly politicians who take it into their mind that one should not say Merry Christmas. I have friends from all kinds of backgrounds and religions
and no one is offended if they are greeted with Merry Christmas. It is great that we all can practise our beliefs in freedom.

I say Merry Christmas. If someone is Jewish and they wish to respond with Happy Hanukah, I will be very happy they chose to include me. If someone wishes me a Happy Hanukah from the beginning, I will respond with "and a Merry Christmas from me" so that we are both included in eachother's celebrations. I believe in live and let live.

In 2009 Hanukah started on Dec. 11 at sundown and finished on Dec. 19th. It is always celebrated around this time. The dates change slightly from year to year. It is the festival of lights and a menora (candelabra) with 8 candle holders is lit. One more candle is lit every day. It commemorates the siege of the temple in Jerusalem and the miracle that happened. This happened in 167 BC, the Maccabeans were holed up in the temple and defeated their attackers. They rededicated the temple in Jerusalem, but there was only oil for one day. The miracle was that the oil lasted 8 days. The children receive "gelt" chocolated wrapped in cold paper to resemble coins. There are also games played with spinning tops. The food includes latkes or potato pancakes fried in oil to remember the miracle of the oil. I am surprised you have never heard of this holiday. Jewish people all over the world celebrate it.

oh but its not politically correct (notice the sarcasim in that statement). Canada is such a melting pot and we accept other peoples from other countries along with their customs and whatnot and we dont want to offend people who dont celebrate christmas...we have to wish them happy holidays...please!
JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON!!!!

Merry Christmas to you too Pose123. I feel that each celebration has its respective place and time in our calender and honour should be given accordingly. In other words I do agree with you on the concept that Christmas celebrated on the 25th of December should be welcomed as 'Merry Christmas' and not happy holidays. Happy holidays is a general term referring to any holiday like school holidays or company breaks, etc.....

Some people really make a lot of rules that can drive us crazy. Our culture and religion or christianity for that matter doesn't restrict us from saying "Merry Christmas?" So why not say it?
If a person from another religion tells you "Happy Holidays!" Do you get mad at them for saying such? I kind of hate the feeling that we, christians, are like criminals for having this faith, this culture, this religion. We should stand up for it because that is what we believe.
Whew!
Have a Merry Christmas!

Hi Theresaaiza, Thanks for responding and I agree. I don't mean that we should offend anyone, and I say Happy Holidays to those who don't celebrate Christmas. I was merely pointing out that the 25th of Decenber is celebrated as the birthday of Christ and should be referred to as Christmas. Blessings.

Hello Pose123 this is checkmail and me too never ever make any diff in any of the festivals or celebrations, enjoy it equally.Well i like to wish merry christmas to all mine buddies when meet them.Even got some catholic friends, so had an habbit of celebrating it well.I don't bother to say or greet anyone merry christmas, at all even in our country there are many religions, but we all live in harmony, peace is quiet a bit far.Still we prefer to greet each other on the festivals. You too wish you a happy merry christmas.
