What's your views on smoking?

Do you smoke? Do you have a certain smoking ban where you live? Does this annoy you? If you don't does it bug you? I know lots of non-smokers who'll happily put up with people smoking around them, and the others who hate it! Do you think the legal age to buy cigarettes is too high? Or too low? I've been recently trying to give up smoking.. Have you ever gone through this?

Welcome to mylot, And I congrats for a 1st good discussion. I hate smoking as well as smokers, I consider smoking as worse than poison, it affects the smoker as well as his/her surroundings I'll never like the person who ruins him/herself as well as their surroundings. And I totally hate when they tell some non-sense reasons for their smoking

Don't forget that, The people who are going to get affected is the people around you, I think they'll be mostly your loved ones, Your children, your parents etc, If you really Love them, will you hurt them? As for me I won't

I do agree, but there are also people who go over their limit and disturb everyone. Where I live, monday night is student night, and if you're not going out to those clubs.. You don't go out at all. Its too dangerous really, all those people drunk.. The amount of police needed each week is ridiculous! With smoking it does not effect your behaviour.. So you are in the correct frame of mind to act appropriately and sensitively to those who do not share your views. -there are certain reasons for smoking, i started smoking when my father had a stroke, even though smoking can cause strokes. Its a crutch. Something i can always rely on and have control over. Sometimes I'll tell myself I'm not gonna smoke for a day, and when I don't I feel like I've achieved something, but when things are too hectic.. I can always have that fall back. The reasons cannot be nonsensical if people feel the need to tell it.. Just because you do not understand.

Why did you start smoking then? Did you feel you wanted to hurt yourself, like kind of self harm?

In some ways yes, I suppose. I was distraught over my father's stroke when I began smoking, and reacting to it in any way that was non-destructive and minor would if anything be an insult. -not that I'd encourage anyone to ever react in the same way.

I have known a lot of people who have successfully quit smoking. Most of them though, already had been diagnosed of lung cancer and is starting to be short of breath, feeling pain in many areas of the body, some are coughing out greenish sputum with streaks of blood. Or if not, oral cancer, throat cancer, gastric ulcers, hypertension, Buerger's disease where the tips of their fingernails eventually turn blue, get necrotic, turn gangrenous, or worse, get amputated. Anything goes! Sorry if I scared you.I don't smoke and I am against it. I know it's legal at 18 but I can see children as young as 11 start smoking. And where did they learn it? Surely from adults, right? It's not easy to quit something you've been accustomed to. I understand that part. But sometimes, other people become passive smokers. Meaning, they too get the harmful effects if they inhale the smoke. Smoking also causes a lot of environmental damage. But one person like me definitely just don't have the power to dictate people to stop it, do I? Quitting, it's really your choice. Hope it wont be too late though.

I don't think people start smoking from adults, but I'm sure they copy them. A lot of people who I know smoke it was the second step. For example they use to do something else &&now the smoke instead. I think a lot of people are also aware how "useful" smoking can be for the stressed, and turn to it because they need a crutch/something to help them.

I am sensitive about smoking around people who aren't comfortable with it. I smoke.. probably about a pack a day. It's a habit I started when I was 16, and in high school, and "rebelling". Then, after my rebellious period ended.. Or well at least THAT part of it, I moved onto other things.. But anyway. I mainly smoke while I drive, because I find myself commuting for about 2 hours a day to work, school, and then work once more. It's a little crazy if you want my opinion on it. I think the reason I picked it up again, more hardcore this time, is just because I was stressed and wanted something to do with my hands. Most of my friends don't smoke, and I respect that. It's obviously not a good habit to get into. I plan on quitting..Sometime. But I'm in no rush.

I don't smoke, and I'm not very happy about being near smokers. Although the smokers I hang out with now are very respectful and will never make me inhale their smoke, neither make me come back home smelling like an ashtray, the smokers I knew before were completely the opposite, and that turned me into an smoker hater. Also smokers are too centered always in "I need to smoke", so it's pretty sad to see people with that high level of addiction.

Let's do it! I've tried so many times to stop but I always end up smoking again and again and again. First, my husband smokes too, so how can i stop. Second, when I'm stressed out I need an outlet. What do we do?

I don't smoke and I'm not comfortable with smokers' views on their habits. Of course, it is not my place to tell them what they should or should not do. I believe that people are smart enough to know what their doing to their own bodies - especially if they are well aware of the harmful effects of smoking (and most of my acquaintances do know this). I especially don't like it when people smoke on the streets. I think it's inconsiderate of them to expose non-smokers to their second hand smoke. I know it's within their rights to smoke, but it also within my rights to enjoy my surroundings. My father smoked for 25 years and he was able to stop a decade ago. This is the reason why I don't believe it's impossible to stop smoking.

I really don't like smoking and I don't want to indulge myself. Smoking doesn't do anything to our body but to destroy it and I totally hate 2nd hand smoke that pass by my nose. I can't do anything coz there are so many people in the world who smokes.

There is a smoking ban here it is GREAT, massive improvement! Now I can go to gigs etc and not feel really sick and ill the next day! Forgot how amazing it was till I went to Berlin and everyone was puffing away. The smoking ban just means the smokers go outside or to special places to smoke. Often they build smoking pavillions for those people to chill out in. The only bad part is that if it is a quiet music performance the smokeers can be disruptive coming and going but mostly it is all good. The smokers get to do their thing and the rest of us have a great time too! Whats not to like!!
