are you considering a pet this christmas?
Please remember a pet is not a toy, to be thrown out after christmas, there are so many animals abandoned after christmas to shelters it is really not funny.
Animals need a permanent home with people who love them,
are you considering getting an animal this christmas if so what kind?
where did you get your animal you already have?
I have three they all came from people we know the oldest was from a batch of kittens we had,
I have taken in cats off the street to give them homes and I if I buy an animal I will only buy it from a shelter and save a life.
how about where are your animals from?

i don't have any extra pets, only those i want. mum has just gone and bought my bro's g.f's horse, cause she was doing nothing with him. he dumped her a few months back, and she never got back on him expect 2 times i think. we don't like the horses sitting there doing nothing. then she decides to sell him, and is quite happy for him to go to the market lose money on him and let him go for dog meat. i even set up a friend to make it look like he'd buy him when it was really mum. in the end mum got the right out come of paying the same price he'd been bought for. so now i'm working him and then we'll sell him, later on.
all animals are cute when their little, and i don't like seeing them dumped.

dog meat, that is awful, the poor animal deserves better than that.

people get animals for christmas present and then realize how much work they are to take care of and then they don't want them anymore. They send them to the pounds right after christmas. It is just awful.

Sometimes someone gets an animal for christmas they don't really want. Or someone gets their child a puppy or kitten, and the child is only interested while it is still a puppy or kitten. A lot of baby animals given for christmas gifts are given away or abandoned when they grow up to be cats and dogs instead of kittens and puppies anymore.

I would never buy a pet as someone's Christmas present. That would be irresponsible. I love animals and I care about animals feelings. I have a vegan diet for ethical and health reasons. I am allergic to most breeds of dogs. I really wanted to get a dog so I researched suitable breeds. I had to get a non moulting breed. So I rang up some animal charities but none had the breeds I could have.
So I contacted a dog breeder and had to travel six hours to get up to her location. I bought my dog, Secret, a miniature poodle. He is unusual because of his coloring. He is mostly white with black patches and a bit of apricot. I got him in November 2004. I wanted to get a second dog and I got Magic from a family that had breed miniature poodles. She is plain black. I bought her in March 2006.
I like animal shelters. If an animal shelter had got a non-moulting breed of dog I would have been able to adopt him or her. I love my two dogs and will always give them my love and attention. I wish that the waiting animals will get loving homes.

Hi maximax. I have two Maltese cuties. They're known as "non-allergenic" dogs. LOL They don't shed. They have no dander. They have hair instead of fur (no undercoat). If you ever want another dog, Maltese are a good choice for those with allergies to fur and dander.

My dear Winter', I have had pets all my life. I would never do any of those things. My kids( one daughter, two grandchildren and a great gran baby on the way) all grow up taking caring of, loving , and seeing new ones come into the world, and ofcourse the end of the lives of many as well. I even take them out to the shelter to see the less fortunate ones. We always want to take afew home. And you really need to come over sometime and help me explain to the little ones how animals aren't toys. Hehehe Take care.

Hello winterose, yes I have three. Two puppies and a cat. The puppies are as what you have seen in my avatar. They are came from friend of ours who had dog bearing six puppies and they can't afford to let those puppies grow since it needs food budget so they decided to give to their friends and we were lucky to have one ( the color brown) the white one is from another friend with the same reason why they could not raise five of their puppies. We gladly accept them and we treat them not an animals but human in fact, would you believe it or not they sleep with us. Yes as what I've said we treat them as human not an animal.
Our cat is once a stray cat who kept on opening our garbage bin until I decided to feed her regularly until she herself to stay with us...we love them all...thanks for the nice topic...

nice tips but i have not that considering to have a pet for this christmas or for the later life also. there was ever one chance to get one dog but i do not think i have enough time and patience to care it so give it up. i also think pet is not only a toy and that's a live life and we should pay more attention to it.

My daughter just rescued a little gray poodle. The six-month pup was bought as a birthday present--her friend had bought it for his mother. The mom didn't want it so they were going to bring it to the shelter. My daughter decided to adopt it. We'll be introduced to Shadow (name of puppy) this Christmas as he and my daughter will spend Christmas with us.

My oldest dog I got from a breeder. My youngest dog I got from my oldest dog. LOL
My cat came here as a stray 2 1/2 years ago and he's still here. My husband's cat was one of two tiny kittens (about a week old) found abandoned outside. No one knew what happened to the momma cat, just that she left and never came back. He actually nursed his kitten from a bottle until she was old enough to be weened.
I can't tell you how many pets I've had from shelters, both cats and dogs. I've had a lot of strays, too. I seem to be one of those people that strays naturally come to. We had a really pretty, part Persian, cat come around right after my cat came to stay. I would have kept her, too, but she wanted to fight all the time with my husband's cat. They got pretty violent, too. I had to take her to a shelter.
I've never thought it was a good idea to get anyone a pet for Christmas. You are very right in that too many times these animals get abandoned soon after Christmas, when the "newness" of them wears off or when they're no longer puppies or kittens. I used to live near an S.P.C.A. and they would not let you adopt a pet during the last few weeks before Christmas, just for that reason. Too many of them were being returned or picked up on the streets after Christmas.
Getting a pet takes a lot of forethought. You really need to dedicate yourself to those pets. They're not toys, they're not a temporary kind of thing, they need to be loved and cared for their entire lives. It always breaks my heart when I go to a shelter and see the looks on some of the dogs faces. They LOOK brokenhearted. I just want to scoop them all up and bring them home, but I can't, of course.

absolutely my friend, why people think animals are just toys that can be abandoned when the newness wears off I do not know.

We have one dog and a fish and do not plan on getting any more this Christmas. We love the one that we have and spoil her like she is our third child. She even has her own stocking and we fill it with goodies as well as wrapping some for under the tree.
It saddens me to know how many families get puppies and such for the holidays and then just leave then abandoned, let hope that there are not as many this year and years to come....

I agree 100%...too many people get animals (and not just for christmas) and they forget that its not something to have just for the sake of having it. its a creature with feelings and needs and if you get a pet you should only do so if you're willing to make it a part of the family.
i have never given or recieved a pet for christmas, but i love animals. I have a dog (rat terrier) named peaches. She will be 2 years old in January :)

I hate when people get animals as gifts and then don't take care of them. my sister wanted to get her kids a rabbit for easter and then she didn't want to care for it. it really is sad. i have pet rats that i rescued from being feeders. shelter animals are the way to go.

some people take more care of their toys or electronics than they do a living breathing animal, it is sad.

Oreo is a dog that was given to my husband three years ago as a gift and has never left his side. I believe that if you get a pet, you should keep it, as you would a child, unless you were in extreme cercumstance and could not take care of it, but otherwise, I believe people should not buy their loved ones pets unless they are asked for it. That's why you see so many homeless pets after christmas, because they are given to people as objects, not as living beings. Therefore, if you buy a pet for some one else, you should make sure they want it before you buy it.....

i have ever three cats, they are all abandoned by people at little age, i adopt them. however, because my wife is sensitive to cat hair and often sneeze, after two years, i have got to support them outside, feed them every day, but one day the black little cat lost, after several days, the other little cat no longer come back. now, i only have one cat, i am very sad, but have no choice, i only hope that two cat are adopted by kind-hearted people.

That is really hard, we used to let our cats go out during the day then people stole two of them, so now we have three and they never go out.

I hate the idea of people giving pets as gifts. The giver can never be 100% sure that the receiver wants the long term commitment of an animal.
I am not planning on any pets this year since I have tons already.
I have a chocolate lab (Boomer) that we bought from a pet store I used to work at. I have a chow/golden retreiver mix (Rusty) who was a street rescue. A black cat female (Moe) who was also a street rescue.
I also have 4 rats. Nibbitz and One of Two were bought from a pet store where they would have been snake food. Francis and Madame Curie were adopted from people who could no longer take care of them and needed new homes for them.
Oh, and there is Bruce, my betta fish. He came from a pet store too.

yes I don't think animals should be given as Christmas gifts unless the family is willing to take care of them forever, not just for Christmas. Wow that is a lot of animals you have.
