do you agree in purchasing an animal from a shelter? some shelters are so crowded they must send their animals across the country to other shelters that will take them. Montreal has sent 450 animals to a toronto shelter. And I saw a program where americans go over to Mexico and take their animals that will be put to death otherwise. The americans save them and bring them back to america to be adopted. Do you think this is a good idea, if so why, if not why not.

YES! I can only remember one time we ever got an animal from a shelter because we always just had them around. I really wonder about the Mexico thing. Just on a funny note because of the same silly myth about mexican food being made with the same ingredients as chinese food. Terrible huh? Hehehe

I have not heard of them being taken from one country to another for adoption purposes. However what is the difference we spend alot of money to adopt children from other countries why not a pet?

It is not a subject that hits the news but it does happen. And I agree saving an animals life is more important that worrying about if it an American cat or a Mexican one etc.

I think purchasing an animal from a shelter is better than buying from a pet store or a puppy mill. It helps take away from the overcrowding of shelters, plus it keeps a dog/cat from being put down. I wish people would either spay/neuter their pets or make sure that nothing happens for their pets to contribute to the over populating of dogs/cats. Where I live, I see about 3 dogs that roam up and down the road. It saddens me that these poor dogs don't have a owner that cares enough to keep them home. It upsets me that a lady across the wooded area from me kept her poor dog on a chain since he was a puppy. Now he's a mean dog that bit my neighbor's little boy on the stomach. I finally got tired and called the shelter in my city and reported her for animal abuse. They honestly couldn't do much since she had a dog house for it. I don't see how a dog house and a few blankets would keep a dog warm when it's in the 20's at night. I think it's good that we are keeping dogs from being killed in Mexico, but it won't help with our overcrowding of pets here in the states. It just adds to the problem that we already had. These poor animals can't be helped being born into this world, to suffer abuse then shoved into a small space without any love from anyone. It just breaks my heart. Since I have 3 dogs myself and a hamster, I can't have anymore. One of ours we rescued, they were giving them away for free, and I knew if they wasn't, they would either be taken to the pound or dumped somewhere to defend for themselves. She is 2 now, and very much full of life.

For sure, I think it is a good idea. Every dog I have ever owned including my childhood dog was from a shelter. I wouldn't get a dog any other way. These dogs need good homes and are usually lovable dogs. All of my dogs have been amazing wonderful sweet dogs. The dog we have now was 2 years old when we got her. The people who owned her had lost their home so they had to get rid of her. Who knows what would have happened to her if we didn't take her. She is a pure bread German Shepherd, and very good dog, very sweet and I know she would protect us if need be. A city worker came in our backyard without us knowing it once. I didn't know he was back there and I let my dog out. She did not attack him but she cornered him up against the wall. As soon as I told her it was OK she backed off. I was very proud how she protected without attacking. Shelter dogs are usually good dogs who were put in to bad circumstances.

Strays - She strayed as a pup and now she has grown into a lovable pet.
Here in India you will find a lot of stray dogs. There is no demand for females and so a lot of the pups are seen on the roads too. I picked one such pup who just strayed in my compound. Earlier I had this fad for pedigree but when I see so many strays around I decided to adopt this one and what a wonderful decision that was. Although I did have problem to tame her down today she is the best dog I have ever had in my life. I hope these strays get a home.

I got Gissi from an Animal Shelter and if I find the right Dog again then yes I will buy from the Animal Shelter I hate to think that the poor Animals will be put to sleep because they are running out of room, with Gissi, they where only going to keep him another 2 weeks and then he would have been put to sleep as he had been there for 4 months and would not let anyone near him I just think People where not patient enough, I sat and spoke to him for as long as it took for him to come to me So yes I would buy again from Animal Shelter

I read a newspaper article in the summer that was talking about an overfull animal shelter. Some people didn't take no for an answer and put their animal on their doorstep. A horse rider from a box of kittens by the side of a road. Some cats were found dumped in a box in a public convenience. The animal shelter became even more overcrowded. I am so sorry to hear that the Montreal animal shelter has had to send 450 animals to the Toronto shelter. I guess that the Toronto shelter is the largest in Canada. I feel sorry for all the dogs, cats and other animals that are awaiting adoption. I hope that many Canadian people will give them loving homes. Well done to the Americans that bring animals back from Mexico. It is horrible that otherwise the animals would be killed. Mexico is a developing country. It is always wise to be kind and loving towards animals. A person can buy food for himself or herself and a pet needs a person to provide food plus water.

Well,I do think it's wrong that they charge a so called "adoption fee",because isn't that selling the pets if you have to pay a charge? That's definately not free.Alot of people won't adopt because of the fee. It's ok that they're picky on who takes the animal, but they shouldn't charge any money. Then when they don't get adopted out some shelters put them to sleep.Alot of shelters have a time limit to keep the animal.I feel so sorry for animals in those shelters. It's a very sad thing.

yes a lot of people cannot afford the adoption fee that is for sure, and some animals are put to sleep because poorer people who would love to have an animal cannot because of the adoption fee.

No I do not agree with this, not because it isn't a nice thing to do, it is but because our own shelters here in the states are full to bust and there are animals that need to be put down because of it. I am all for helping out around the world but believe whether it be pets, kids, the hungry or the ill we should take care of our own first and once they are taken care of then help those in other countries. I do not mean to sound harsh but if everyone would take care of their own then maybe there would be no need to go else where.

I think getting pets from shelter is a good idea. but my experience with my local shelter is bad and i am very disappointed that they have sooo many in the shelter and want let one go for example, if you dont have a fenced yard, or one of the animals you have at home are not fixed. I understand that they dont want the animal to end back up in the shelter... but would they rather it be put to sleep??

We have a lot of animals in the US that are being killed every day because they have not been adopted. Bringing them from another country is not necessary, because there are so many that are in the US that need to be adopted. I would never get an animal from a national shelter, such as the humane society or aspca because they charge so much money. The humane society kills animals at a high rate, and they do not help people who have animals that need medical attention. They charge more for surgeries, etc., than a private veterinarian does. I think that is wrong. People donate to those places, hoping animals will be taken care of. I will go to a private shelter, such as PAWS to get an animal. They really care about them, and treat them very well. Plus, if you need to, you can return the animal to the shelter no questions asked. Sometimes people get into a situation where they simply can no longer care for their pet.
