Is there any method of backing up of contacts in SIM cards?

Heart of mobile - A subscriber identity module (SIM) on a removable SIM card securely stores the service-subscriber key (IMSI) used to identify a subscriber on mobile telephony devices (such as computers and mobile phones). The SIM card allows users to change phones by simply removing the SIM card from one mobile phone and inserting it into another mobile phone or broadband telephony device.

A SIM card contains its unique serial number, international unique number of the mobile user (IMSI), security authentication and ciphering information, temporary information related to the local network (also temporary local id that has been issued to the user), a list of the services the user has access

I want to have the back up of all of my contacts in my SIM card to avoid the loss of contacts in case of loss of my mobile..My mobile is just ordinary one and I don't have much feature on that so that I can connect to the computer and have the back up. Is there any way to copy all the contacts to my computer from my SIM card without much expenses?Because, a year back I lost one of my mobile and suffered a lot to collect all of the contacts and still I am not able to get all of my contacts. But making note of the contacts manually is not possible for me.If some other possibilities are there to have the back up, it will be useful to me.Please give me some suggestions.

I'm not sure about every provider but Verizon has an option (for a couple dollars a month, I don't know how much for sure) where you can back up everything (contacts, text messages, photos....) to your online account.

Our service providers are doing so and we should take the back of the data available in the mobile by some other means. Now I have decided to copy them manually in separate diary. But it may take about a week as we can not copy more than 50-75 contacts at a time.If we continue to copy them, there are possibilities for mistakes. Thanks for your response.

Sim cards offer two options. Save to sim, or send to phone memory. If your phone allows it, you can e-mail yourself what's called a vcard, but quite often you have to do this one phone number at a time. It depends on how "smart" your phone is. If you have an old basic model, you may be sol, unless you know someone with a smart phone on the same provider as yourself. If this is the case, then you can barrow that phone to do a mobile back-up.

My mobile is not having the capability of sending vcard as mine is a basic one. But as like told, just I can use some others mobile with the capablity of sending vcard just to have the back up option. I have contacts both in my mobile and in my SIM card. My friend suggested to copy the content of the SIM to the phone and then compying them to a unused / lapsed SIM cards from the mobiles. But I am not sure whether the lapsed SIM will have the contacts lists for a long time or not. If the contacts are there for a long time in the lapsed SIM, then it is easy for me to have the back in them as I have lot of lapsed SIM cards. Thanks for your participation and suggestion to this discussion.

pen and paper is the most reliable, or some mobiles allow you to sync with your pc, I know on my I-Phone I can make calls through my mobile using the mic thats in-built in the pc. It also stays a back up copy of all my contacts text messages and pictures on my phone and pc.

I used to have the back up only in my diary. But it is taking lot of time to complete and as also we are copying the numbers at a stretch, we are not able to copy them exactly as such.Possibilities of mistakes are there while manually writing them.As my mobile is not high end one, I may not able to back up the contacts to my PC also.I think, pen and paper are the best possibility as you have mentioned. But we need to spend more time to copy them.I should not copy more than 50 contacts in a day to avoid the mistakes. Thanks for your response to this discussions.
