In my house I have ADSL i.e. normal modem for my computer for internet connection. My daughter bought Notebook recently. I thought wireless modem will be of help to her as she can access internet from her room it self. So I applied for wireless modem but it is yet to come. Do you have Normal modem or wireless modem at home or office? Will it be possible to access it through the walls, as there is wall obstruction between computer and my daughter's room? Which one do you recommend?

I have a broadband (ADSL) modem with a wireless router for networking at home. This means that other computers (desktop and laptop) with wireless adapter can access the network, and if not firewalled, the Internet. There is a difference between a wireless router and a wireless modem. A wireless router needs to be connected to a modem, which in turn is connected to the cable or telephone line. A wireless modem communicates directly to a wireless station, without the need for a fixed line. It is more convenient because we can access the Internet in any part of the country, as long as the service provider has a transmitter in the area. I prefer using ADSL with a wireless router.

Hai rosdimy, thanks for the detailed information. You have very clearly made it known to me, who does not have much computer knowledge. However I have one doubt. If wireless modem is directly connected to wireless station and can be used anywhere, wherever service provider's transmitter is there, then why do you prefer ADSL modem with wireless router? If you have time, can you please explain to me? Sorry for the trouble. You are explaining well and I want to clear my doubt and know things. Thank you.

Wireless Internet service providers, there are at least 4 in my country, set a limit to the amount of data that can be downloaded per month. They offer several options, the lowest is 3 Gb. A person who uses the Internet for emails will probably not exceed the limit. I can easily reach the limit in less than 2 days. During the holidays it takes less than a day. If you still want to use Wireless Internet, check the packages offered against your daily Internet usage. I have an unlimited data download with the land line. Wireless Internet can be fast but if the nearest wireless station is congested with Wireless Internet users and cell phones, the transfer speed can be reduced to a crawl. No problem. I just came back from an errand.

Hi Buchi, at first I have a ADSL modem only. It has only USB port only therefore it is not enough if more than a person in the same house need to access internet connection. Therefore my son bought another wireless router later on. The wireless router has four USB ports altogether. of course only my desktop needs to connect to the router by inserting the USB cable. My son and my nephew can surf net on their respective laptop at the same time as well. There is totally no obstruction by the wall as the two of them are surfing net in their rooms respectively without any problem. Though my laptop can excess internet connection but my hubby insists that I should use the normal modem to get on to the web if I use either the desktop or laptop alone at home. He says that this could avoid much effect of wireless wave which might be harmful to our health Take care and happy posting

Perhaps a wireless modem is much more convenient. But I have the normal ADSL modem at home. Since I use the wireless router, so it is not so necessary for me to have the wireless modem. I guess perhaps a wireless router works better. It can work by different floors and can access the walls. I love China

When I started this discussion, I did not have any idea of this all about. You all have given me good information. Thank you all for that. I will ask my service provider if he can give me a wireless router. My respects to China.

We have a regular modem and a wireless one too. We use the wireless modem mostly now because we have more than one computer and many different people use their computers and internet connection. I have had no problems with the wireless modem and everyone can surf privately on their own at the same time.

Is the speed slow or normal? How about connectivity, is it uninterrupted?

I have a DSL that is connected to a wireless router. I recommend that you buy the wireless N router sinec it has the widest range of all the types of wireless connections. You just need to strategically place the wireless router so that you can get internet access anywhere in your home. In my experience, our router is separated from my computer by two rooms and I have about 50-60% signal strength. A wireless router is a good investment.

I have a regular modem in my home that is hooked up to my desktop computer. I also purchased a wireless router that sends the signal throughout my home so I can get on my laptop. I recommend going this way so that you don't have to bother with which one can get on the internet. You can buy the router for about $40 from Office Depot, and then just hook it to your computer and your regular modem. You can get on the internet from anywhere in your home and even a few feet outside of your home, but people riding down the road can't get access to your internet.

Hi Buchi, Like you I am also using ADSL modem for internet connection. I only heard about the wireless connection and never used it. So it is difficult for me to comment about the same. But I heard that it is good to access internet wherever you go. I think you will be able to give more information/advantage about wireless connection once your daughter gets the connection. So we are waiting for your opinion hope you will come out with it at the earliest.

I have both, usually i use ADSL when I am at home. My wireless modem can be effected by the position. Once i was in a place which far from the city centre the speed of internet was slow, sometimes I could not connect with net , however, when I came back city centre the speed is normal. In office when we need more computer on internet we can use wireless modem. Most of time we still use ADSL.

hi, i've an ADSL direct mode, it's directly connected to my computer and to phone line. i think that the direct modem are powerful and faster than wireless modeb, also because signals are faster in a cable than in the air, so if you need internet to play some videogames onlyne or for something that requires a fast connection, you must have a direct mode, if you need to go around in hte house, maybe with a laptop, and you don't need a fast connection you can use a wireless modem.

I am taking wireless mainly for my daughter's studies. She may not use internet all the time. So I think wireless is ok for me. However if I find it difficult, then I will change to ADSL direct. Thanks for the information.

HI Aunty, I Use and ADSL modem actualy when i opted for a wireless modem from BSNL they told it was out of stock and its going to take few months so i got an adsl one only so from that day i using the same. But for laptops its advised to have a wireless one only as we can access from any floor and this facility is not there in adsl. Have a great day.

I am taking it from BSNL. I do not know what they are going to supply. Anyway for the time being they do not have stock of it. I do not know when it will come. All are recommending ADSL router only as you have also said. Thanks for the information.

I use an ADSL modem in my house, I would use adsl modem faster than the wireless modem, adsl modem for for use in transferring data cable.Eventhough wireless modem more practical, but wireless modem very slow if the weather is bad or many users connected together in the same area.

Even other members in this thread are telling the same thing that wireless modem speed is less compared to ADSL modem. Anyway I will have my present ADSL modem with me only as I purchased it. If any problem, then I will use ADSL modem. Thanks for the information.

hi, I think ADSL modem works fine and wireless can travel to wall but if the frequency of signal is less then signal may be weak. As said by you that is your daughters room is near your room they wont be any problem. If your daughter room is on another floor then you may have problem in accessing wireless modem when signals are weak.

Hello buchi, by wireless modem do you mean a broadband modem? or an ADSL modem with wireless support? Well, it doesn't matter because you can have a regular wired ADSL modem then buy an access-point and wireless router to make it wireless. From my point of view, ADSL (wired) modem is still better because it appears to be more stable than wireless one. The wireless modem really affected by similar wave, wall, and/or weather.

I have ADSL wire modem which the Indian telephone providers BSNL supplied. Now I want to make it wireless. They call these as Type I and Type II modems. Type I I have and Type II I want to have for wireless. Apart from this I do not know anything to reply to your question. But now BSNL say they do not have Type II modem with them and it takes time for the supply. So right now I have only ADSL wire modem. Thanks for the information. I do not know what type of wireless modem BSNL is going to supply.

A wireless router or modem as you call it is only an enhansment to your pre-existing computer connection. For wirelesses to do much you must have an existing connection. So instead of routing your dsl through your computer you'd rout it through the router. And yes wireless signle is able to be broadcast through walls.

Ya sure, the connection will get through walls. In fact, I am myLotting with a wireless connection now! Oh..do you know to setup the modem..the passwords etc. You might want to ask your ISP (Internet Service Provider) about it, cos most of the modems come with pre-configured passwords and you may be required to change it.
