your best apple pie

i tried to make a apple pie and it turned out sour i was so upset i thought that the apples were sweet enough to produce its own sweetness, question what are the best apples to use for apple pie? and is there anyone who uses a sweeter other than white sugar for their apple pies or other deserts?
