well, i should be finishing college next year, by God's grace and i'm getting real worried because everything, it seems, in my beloved country is getting worse by the day and i'm wondering how it will be when i get there. it's clear that jobs are not readily available and one might want to venture out starting alone but there's the issue of capital and experience and all that... i really don't know what to do. any advice??

Optimism tends to help in situations like this. Are you going for your bachelors degree? If so, keep in mind, that many job opportunities open up for you in that case. Most companies LOVE to see that you have a bachelors degree, even if it's not a "relevant" one. So you could always try to land a "temporary" job in pretty much any field (and not necessarily entry-level), until something that you're interested in opens up. That's what I'd do! And in my opinion, if you live in the US at least, things are definitely getting better! And are slowly looking up. It's yes, a little harder to find a job, but you'll definitely stand out as an applicant with a degree on your resume (as well as whatever experience you have behind you in your work history). I would say: don't worry! Concentrate on getting your degree and go from there. I'm sure something will pop up. No need to stress yourself over it (prematurely, anyway).

thanks for the encouragement... i could do with it right now. yes, i'm going for a bachelor's degree and in business administration too, which i hear is a versatile course. i also have a professional diploma in IT and i do a bit of web design, so i think i'm qualified. however, in my country, things hardly work based on merit, instead it's about who you know in the high and mighty and hw many a**es u can kiss and this is where my major fear is coming from.

You and my daughter are in the same boat. She is also looking forward to getting her degree by April next year, by God's grace. We do live in what the international scene had branded as the third world. And yet this is the only world we have. Many of our people had long joined that Filipino diaspora because of much needed jobs. They found their livelihood, by hook or by crook, in alien lands. My daughter's dilemma is: must she be one entry in the statistics? I told her to pray for God's guidance. If that is her first step, she could never go wrong. Anyway, I also told her to prepare a real good resume, find the people who had been kind to her and ask if she could include them as references, find the top twenty companies that you would want to be a part of and send them your credentials, and while waiting, do the thing that makes you happy. If you like to write, write as passionately, if you like to cook, give samples to your friends, they might order for their parties, if you like to sing and dance, join group bands and have fun. Somewhere, somehow, sometime, your star will shine and before you know it, you are on your way. Your life is your life and there were more depressing times in history. Make the most of who you are!
