Do Honest Mechanics Exist?

I recently had a very bad experience at the place I normally take my car for repairs and maintenance. I need to find another garage. I've heard that the car dealers are overpriced and they often do repairs you haven't asked for and overcharge for them.
(My friend once saw a charge for $6 to lubricate her door locks ... she said for that price I want you to leave me the bottle of WD-40).
My same friend also started taking her car to a family friend that is a mechanic... but she often questions some of his work, saying it seems like he's doing un-necessary work.
Are you happy with your mechanic? Or are they all out to make a buck at the customer's expense?

I think there are some honest mechanics around. We've had bad ones, but have enjoyed having a trustworthy one in recent years. Even when we moved and it was not as convenient, we have stayed with him. You just have to dump the bad ones and talk to other people around to get references for other places.

well same as in any business companies will always try and take advantage of you,
I think everybody when they are learning to drive should also learn about the mechanics of the car so that they are aware of the problems that can occur maybe not be able to fix it themselves but to at least be able to know roughly where the problem lies.
Its because people dont have the working knowledge of cars that some garages will take advantage and over price or do work that is not needed.
At the end of the day its buyer beware same as any company or shop on the high street or online.
