Do you pay attention during classes?

Every year I have the same problem. Before school starts, I tell myself: "This year, I'm going to attend every claas, I'll pay attention, and I'll take notes."
Yet every year, after two weeks, I find myself looking around in class, talking about stuff, playing games on my laptop, texting to others or sleeping. About everything except for paying attention and taking notes.
How about you? Do you pay attention in class, or is the classroom just an extension of the playground?

For the most part I'm paying attention in class. It's part of the reason after my freshman year in college I refused to take my laptop to class and I must say I'm getting better at the whole note taking. I've gone from a 2.8 GPA to a 3.4 GPA this past semester and I'm quite proud of it and a lot of it is just paying attention in class. It's the part of learning that you're going to get the most from.

What I found to really help me was hand write my notes, come back and then retype them on the computer. It allows me to heard them, write them once, read them once, and then when test come around I make flashcards so its again an easier way to study plus you're seeing all the information again.

refusing to bring your laptop is a good idea. But when other people bring their laptops and start playing games, it's really hard to pay attention too.
The reason I brought my laptop in the first place, was taking notitions, but after a few classes, it became a source of distraction. There's always a moment when the professor starts rabbling, and you lose attention, from this moment on, the rest of the period will be useless.

I always pay attention now matter what I am doing but I try to get the best out of everything and I cannot do that if my mind is elsewhere! I will be back in college this September and so I will get to be concentrating again! I cannot wait. I guess everyone differs and you need to enjoy ehat your doing!

Hi, angel
Nice to find a very good 'paying-attention-in-class' kind of student. I always envied them as to how they can concentrate on things which were so boring and seemed worthless at the time.
You are surely a good student. Keep striving hard and you will set the trend for all those studious students around. Have a nice day.

You will find only a handful students who really pay attention in the class and take notes.
I had similar ambitions like you. Because after a really poor result, I always swore that I will strive hard and will show the others how drastically I can improve. But after a week or two, I hardly listened to anything in class. We all used to chat. In those classes where the teacher was very strict, I did not talk to the others, but would make cartoon figures of teachers or draw superheroes and keep myself busy.
Those were some great times, weren't they? I miss those wonderful days.

You know, it depends on the class.
Personally, I am more of an independent studier and I do best when I teach myself basically, as in read the chapter and take the online study quizzes that come with the book and such...
There have been certain classes where I never payed attention in the lecture and it didn't matter because everything he said was in the book and I taught it to myself when I had to study for the exam, and I came out of the class with an A. This has happened several times.
But then there have been other classes where it was very crucial to pay attention, and I realized that, so I did.
It's all just dependent on how you learn... if you do not get anything from the lecture then it is just really hard to pay attention! So I just go with the flow and tell how hard it is going to be. More often than not, I can teach myself later.
