Do you have to be a Christian to be entitled to receiving Christmas Gifts?

I mean think about it.............
To be Christian is to believe in Christ....He who was born, received the gifts of the Magi and started a whole new tradition of gift giving on His birthday.
If one does not believe in Christ, does one have the right to partake of the celebrations of Christmas including the receiving of gifts from Christians?
You don't see Christians accepting gifts for Barmitzva's (turning 13) or celebrating Hanukkah as the Jewish people do.
In Western society we almost take it for granted that the people we interact with on a daily basis are Christian. Everyone from our neighbour to our postman to delivery people, to co-workers. All the people that we 'give a little gift to' for Christmas for their friendship, the services they've provided etc... But who's to say if they are really Christians or not. Should they be accepting our gifts? What it comes down to I guess is the real meaning of Christmas. Christ was non-partisan. He believed that ALL people were entitled to love, peace and good will.
And it is the in the spirit of showing our love for our fellow man, that we give to people outside our inner circles at Christmas time.
Most of us live in a free society where the practice of individual religion is a constitutional right.
So.
MERRY CHRISTMAS to all you followers of Christ, all you Pagans and all you worshippers of other deities. To you all I extend my love and good wishes for this holiday season.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays..oh and seasons greetings! I think gift giving should have more to do with the thought behind the gift. Not just the day it is given.

Exactly! I like your attitude and I am sure that is what the real meaning of Christmas is no matter how you slice it!

I always thought it was pretty weird that everyone got off for a holiday for Christmas but only Jews get off for Roshashanah and Muslims for Ramadan etc, etc.
It seems odd but it really shows you how engrained Christianity is in our culture.

Actually the exchanging of gifts during the holiday season goes way back before Christ. Many religions had a holiday this time of year where gifts were exchanged. Heck Christians borrowed many of their holiday traditions from other religions. Why shouldn't they deserve gifts then, they started it?

To me, Christmas is the time for giving and sharing. I thought that's what all the gift-giving was all about. We may not receive gifts for the other religions but we also don't have Hanukkah as an official day off of work, either. Most companies have "floating holidays" that everyone can take at any time. Since the Jewish people get Christmas off, it's only fair that we should all get these floating holidays to use whenever we wish. The Jews would use them for Hanukkah, while those of us who do not follow that faith could use them at any time.
I would not call myself a Christian. I was raised as Christian and have always celebrated Christmas. But, since Christmas is REALLY a celebration of the birth of Christ, the gift-giving is something else entirely, yet we all do it.
I like to think of it as the holiday of sharing and caring. I don't care if the recipients of my gifts are Christian, Pagan, Jewish, Buddhist or anything else. I give them from my heart, not because of a specific religion.

Yes the holiday has been too commercialized in my eyes. It's all about gifts and not about celebrating His birth etc. I was raised Catholic and as a child did not get a lot of gifts which was fine by me. Today the Holiday to be is about giving of ones self in many ways more than it is about gifts. But the gifts are a huge deal to kids still. I love it celebrated either way. My wife and I plan on attending midnight Mass the 25th.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

And that was the whole point of this discussion mentalward...........to point out that society has set aside this time of year for giving good will to ALL men, regardless of religion. Well said sweets.
Hiya Grandpa Bob! Nice to see you.

I agree totally! It has become way too commercialized. I refuse to allow the grumpy shoppers stress me out. Too many people are panicking, trying to get gifts for everyone before anyone else gets them. Too many lights, too many decorations. WAY too much money is spend on Christmas.
I don't give many gifts but I do like to give everyone something special, something heartfelt. I pass by those pre-packaged soaps and grooming kits and think that's so sad! That's what people buy as gifts when they want to give something but don't have the time (or don't want to take the time) to really pick out something special. It shouldn't be about time or even physical gifts. Sometimes, just sharing a meal is worth more than any shiny, wrapped gift. One year, I gave my mother an entire day. I was her "slave" for a day and would do anything she wanted. She loved that gift more than anything I could have bought. I also try to make most of the gifts I give like breads, cakes, candies, etc. I wrote a short story about my stepfather one year as a Christmas present and it brought tears to his eyes. These are the types of things I'd rather receive than something impersonal.
I wish more people would think about what it's really all about.

Hey sparks! And a very Merry Christmas to you to! And I totally
agree with you too! I believe that whatever religion or non-
religion you are you don't have to be a Christian to get gifts
for Christmas! I grew up in a Jewish home and we celebrated
Christmas and Hanukah! I didn't know what the hell I was and
now I am neither! I am a work in progress Pagan/Wiccan and proud!
So, if I choose to give gifts for Christmas, it has nothing to
do with Christ! It is just because...But, I can also still
wish everyone love and good wishes too! (Happy Holidays my
most favorite Pagan Princess)!!!

In addition to what you mentioned, in today's day & age, it seems that almost everyone celebrates Christmas. I am unsure if it's by coincidence, but at the same time, Jews also have their own Hanukkah (if that's how it's spelled) holiday.
I can probably go on with various things here, but I'm pressed for time.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.
That is some food for thought. I just like to give and receive gifts. It does not even have to be a holiday. I think gift giving should just simply occur when the mood strikes you.

I'm probably better off grabbing a guitar & playing the guitar solo myself ... I'd be so uncoordinated that I'd probably end up going too high for human ears to hear.

I wonder what it would sound like if you both sung that song that's still on your profile ... I wonder if I can still hit the high notes in the background of the refrain right before the guitar solo ...

At this time of year many holidays are celebrated, in very olden times, before Christ the winter solstice was a time of big celebration. So any and all gifts at this time are welcomed if they are given freely with an open mind. Blessings all.

I don't really know if you have to be Christmas to enjoy Christmas. I have seen other cultures from around the world celebrate Christmas. I guess its really open to all different people and their own ideals. I think its just a time to get together and have some alone time.

Some people do not celebrate Christmas and they are offended by it. I have no idea why they are because it is just a holiday like any other holiday. My boyfriend and I are Agnostic, my boyfriend's mom and her boyfriend are Wiccans and we all celebrate Christmas. We do not mind if anyone says "Merry Christmas", we don't even mind if you say "Happy Hanukkah", "Happy Kwanzaa", "Happy Holidays", "Happy Solstice" or whatever you feel like saying to us. We embrace all holidays and cultures. We find any reason to just celebrate. Those people who get upset about "Merry Christmas", need to chill out and just relax. I love Christmas because I love the lights, I love the smell of pine trees, I love giving to people and seeing that look on their face when they get the gift they love and they hate (the tell some really hilarious stories), and I love food! I admit that Christmas is over-hyped sometimes (well, over-commercialized, but you all know what I mean), this we can probably agree on, but that does not mean that I do not celebrate. Life is too short to make a big deal out of it. This day came and went so fast that it is almost as if it hadn't come at all. I could not believe how fast this day came. I guess it is because I am older.
I went to my brother's grave yesterday. He has been gone for 3 years now. I decorate his headstone and my grandpa's headstone every Christmas because I believe that it is what they want. I give them trees, little pine trees because they smell so good and because they look so cute. How can anyone not love a pine tree?
I had little money this Christmas, and somehow, I made it all work. I did not ask for anything this Christmas. I have what I want and need. Heck, as long as I got food for Christmas, that is all I really needed.

I love your attitude sweets, and that despite your own beliefs (or lack thereof, you know what I mean), you embrace all celebrations. And why not? As you say, life's too short, and any reason to celebrate life is a good thing. I'm Wiccan, and I celebrate the Winter Solstice, but my hubs is more of a traditional Christmas person and so we have a real Christmas tree with all the trimmings, and gifts and food, and family and friends and just plain fun. I love it all, embrace it all, and pray privately in my own way at my own times. And I believe in the spirit of Santa Claus, in God, in Christ and in the Wiccan path. And I don't for one minute think God is frowning at me because of it. I choose to believe He's celebrating too! lol

No I do not believe that you have to be a Christian, because for a start everyone believes in their own way they might not go to church and Pray and read the Bible but it does not mean they do not believe
As you say everyone is to be loved no matter what as for the Postman and that well look at the hard work they do all year round, whether hot or cold Weather, yes they get paid for it but a Thank you is still nice and to know you are appreciated and what better time then Christmas it boosts them
So I would say Christian or not everyone is entitled to a Gift, specially the Gift of Love
Hugs to you and have a wonderful Time

well I would say in the first place Christmas celebrated as the christians do, does not involve gift giving at all.
Christmas in the form that it has taken now, is celebrated by all and marked specifically by gift-giving.
So i guess it's up to the person which type of christmas he or she is celebrating to determine whether or not gifts are of the essence!

No you don't have to be Christian to recieve or send gifts on Christmas. There are many other non Christian celebrations on Christmas day; Santa claus, and whatever atheists do besides whine. Says in the bible, whatever you do for even the least of mine you do for me. Interrupted whatever you do for someone, no matter who they are, you are doing for Jesus, and whatever you are doing for Jesus you are doing for God.
