Do you find the best comfort in sleeping on your back, on your belly or on your side? In a mini survey that I did amongst people I know, I found that most of them sleep on their belly facing preferably towards the left. I too sleep in this position when I am in deep sleep. They say the best position to sleep in is on your back stretching yourself out straight but very few people like this position. Everyone tosses and turns a bit in their sleep before they find their position of deep sleep which is the most comfortable position for them to sleep in. Which position do you find most comfortable?

i usually sleep on my sides.as per one survey sleeping on your left side is good one.sometimes i do sleep on my belly.its offers comfort as the body gets maximum contact and support.but this position has its drawbacks too.it compromises your gastrointestinal and cardiac system.

It is indeed true that sleeping on your belly can have its downside as well though I find it the most comfortable position. Sleeping on the side is also a good position.

Hello jaiho2009, you're on good territory if you sleeping on your back because that is the best position as recommended by sleep doctors! I don't know whether so many people who sleep on their bellies have had any problem of not being able to breathe.

I always go to sleep laying on my side and it must be comfortable for me and that is how I wake up most mornings. I have been told that I do move about it my sleep so I guess if I go back to laying on my side that I really must be comfortable. I do not find it at all comfortable to lay on my front. This is because I have been blessed in the chest department and I find it quite painful if I lay on my front. I sometimes lay on my back though

Sleeping on your sides is also good but second only to sleeping on your back. Now that's a good point there about one difficulty pertaining to sleeping on the front;-).

I sleep on my right side, with my left knee pulled up toward my chest. I don't know exactly why I sleep like this, but I think a big part of it roots back to the fact that I had a herniated disc in my back a few years back and it caused me to have major sciatic pain in my left side so I was definitely not comfortable to sleep on that side. I used to sleep on my belly but I quit doing that when I was pregnant with my children and I have never done it again.

In your case you have been able to change your favorite sleeping position from that of sleeping on your belly to sleeping on your side. Not many people are able to do that and even in case of ladies who become pregnant they go back to sleeping on their stomach a while later after their delivery.

Before falling asleep, I turn on all sides. May be because I have problems with my backbone. First I put myself on the back, then I turn on the right side, then on the left side, then on the belly (especially in summer)and repeat these movements until I feel relaxed and the sleep comes. I prefer to sleep on the right side as it is the position I often wake up with. This position is indicated in some cases of gall bladder malfunction. I heard people with heart problems must not sleep on the left side. The truth is my gall bladder is lazy. Is this the cause I prefer to sleep on the right side? Maybe!

Wow, it is very interesting to hear that the left facing belly lay is the most popular sleeping position. It is mine as well and I always thought I was strange for sleeping like that. This is the best way for me to fall asleep. Occasionally, if I am very very tired, I can sleep on my back, but like I said I have to be very tired in order to do this. But this was a very informative post, thanks

Hi SkiBabe - Thanks for writing in and reviving this discussion! It has indeed been intriguing to find out about so many different sleeping positions - it's one of the things that we least think of, but has an effect on our health in the long run. So the next time you are sleeping on your belly or on your side, remember that the best sleeping position is sleeping on your back. Also, some ladies have pointed out that sleeping on your stomach may be really inconvenient due to different feminine reasons so these may be things to ponder for you. Thanks once again and Happy MyLotting!

I switch positions...I am all over the place! lol. I am not a...still sleeper. I change from laying on my back, to laying on one side, then the other, then my stomach...lol. Sometimes I even sleep curled in a ball (laying on my legs)...but that's usually when I'm really cold lol. I think I would say I am most comfortable sleeping on either of my sides, but I just can't stop moving! I probably move a lot in my sleep too! lol

I don't normally sleep in a ball, although when I do I find it comfortable lol. I think sleeping on my side is just...the easiest position! :P lol When me and my sister were younger we would LOVE to sleep in my moms bed with her when my dad was working really really late, and my mom used to kick me out of the bed and tell me to sleep on the floor because I move around so much :P lol

I can imagine your mom's issue sleeping next to someone who is tossing and turning all the time! It may be due to an intrinsic restlessness that may be ingrained in you.By the way, do you experience it when you are awake as well? If so, then reducing your restlessness may reduce your tossing during sleep time. Just a guess, I am not a doctor;-)!

It is natural to switch positions while sleeping. However, one finds the best sleep in one position which is your favorite sleeping position. Curling up in a ball is a natural foetal position which many people like. Your favorite position is on your sides which is also a good position.

Hey this is the ideal position so you are on the right track! After changing position you even go back to lying on your back and that's terrific!

I like to sleep on my side. The only time I sleep on my front is when I am pregnant for some reason. I always try to stay out of the back and front positions when I am pregnant but always end up in one of them

Sleeping on the side is I believe the second best position after sleeping on your back. You have a good point there that ladies who may get pregnant cannot sleep on the front and have to sleep on the back.
22 Dec 09
Sleeping on your back when you are pregnant is very dangerous too as the baby is right near a blood vessel and it can burst and make you bleed internally.

Hello Emvy548 me too think that the best position to sleep is to stretch our back straight on our bed and sleep well. But me too often do sleep turning on my left side, as it get us to sleep very quickly.Even in our yogas and pranayam, stretching our back straight and getting in sleeping postion relaxes our body and regenerates the energy.Think this is an best position and the worst seems to me of sleeping front side turned down on the bed, even sometimes while sitting on chairs.Anyways enjoy your sleep, Happy mylotting.

Hiya emvy, On the left side that is the side I prefer to sleep on sometimes however I end up in another position but mainly I always sleep towards the left. I rarely wake up on that side. The other side the right, it´s more difficult to sleep for me. It´s very rare I end sleeping face up too. Once when I was small I found myself sleeping on the Floor with all the blankets in a heap around me. I said the Bed is too small and narrow. I must have been restless I suppose.

Sleeping on a narrow bed restricts your movements and you end up sleeping on one side. I can imagine your plight!

I usually sleep on either side. I like to sleep on my back in the summer. I don't sleep that way to much in the winter because my nose gets cold and it is easier to cover it on my side. I never sleep on my stomach, when I do my back hurts when I get up. It's probably my mattress.

I have arthritis in my back and I'm sure the mattress doesn't help either. I know I need a new one, but I can't afford it (at least not until I get rich from My Lot). LOL

Hurting backs are also common as experienced by some people who have responded. Sleeping on a firm mattress and maintaining the right posture when you are awake helps to reduce back pain to a great extent.

I like sleeping on my right side.I think it is my most comfortable position. And i like sleeping at the right of my husband.Sometimes,i will change a position, but when i wake up every morning, i found myself still on the right side, maybe it is my habit and hard to change.

That means that the right side is your prederred sleeping position, which is good, second only to sleeping on your back. In your case you go and come out of sleep on your right side. Some responses have indicated sleeping on the side because of back issues.

If you sleep on your back it is the best position to sleep in. If you feel comfortable and relaxed then it is the ideal situation to be in.

I can understand - once you go to sleep you cannot control your movements fully. But you make a good start by sleeping first on your back so that is a positive sign!

I can't sleep facing the ceiling. My back will hurt in a few minutes, so is hard for me to keep that position. The best one for me is sleeping on my side. I like curling up and putting my cheek in the pillow.

There are many people in this discussion who find sleeping on the side the best. If your back hurts there may be an underlying problem and maybe you should get it checked by the doctor.

My doctor said it's best (for you back/spine) to sleep on your side. I usually flip from side to side when I try to go to sleep, sometimes I lay on my stomach too. I find that laying on my back is kind of uncomfortable.

I guess if you have a problem with your back then sleeping on your sides is the next best alternative so that you do not put too much pressure on your back.

If you do not sleep in your favorite position you do tend to miss some sleep. I too have the same issue if I am sleeping on my sides and return to my favorite position.
