Are game shows going the way of the dinosaurs?

After starting my last discussion asking people what game show they would like to be on if ever given the chance...or for people to share their experience with being on game show if they have ever been so lucky...i got to thinking....
To me it seems that game shows have been waning in popularity as of late. A few years back, new game shows were all the rage, but allof those have slowly disapeared (deal or no deal, one vs. 100, weakest link etc..)
Of course, the classics are still around, Jeopardy, Wheel of fortune, The Price Is Right, i think even Who wants to be a millionaire is still on somewhere, but you don't hear much about it any more.
It seems that the game show fad has gone away and been replaced with even more redundant reality TV shows...would you agree with me?
What game shows that have disappeared do you miss? Do you have a favorite classic game show? I still catch re-runs of some of them on the game show network on cable when i am bored and there is nothing else on.

I think your right...the traditional game show is slowly being replaced by the competition reality seriese. Granted, i am not a fan of game shows myself (but you know that anyway) and I do like a few of the reality competition shows, like "the colony" and "hells kitchen" or Ghost hunters acadamy....but the bulk of them are just stupid pointless pop-culture competative "clique" wars and many are even scripted. Like surviver, big brother, real life, etc....most of them out right suck and it's sad to see society make the leap it has with them.

My fave Reality shows are as follows in order,
#1 Big Brother, #2 Survivor, #3 Hells Kitchen, #4 Amercias Next Top Model. Those are the main ones I watch. Colony was great and I hope it comes back next year as well.

Yeah, the reality shows that have an element of GOOD competition to them aren't too bad...just have never been a big fan of the "follow my life" type of shows with all the celebrities etc.

I think that reality shows paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to the winners are the new gane shows now days. My all time fave has to be Jeopardy. I learn a lot from watching that game.

lol, liz is a jeapordy fanatic...she will answer stuff that leaves me wondering,"how in the heck could anyone possibly know that???" I avoid the show like the plague myself, I am stupid and I recognize that, I'm ok with it..but I don't want to watch a game show that proves I'm stupid or shows me how stupid I really am, lol.

awww..c'mon x...you aren't STUPID....you just can't recall things as fast as i can (maybe due to your age *teehee* just kidding hun!)...As i have tried to tell you before, the reason i am able to answer as many i do is because of the hidden clues they give you in the wording of the questions..they use lots of puns and hints that make it so that if you have even the most GENERAL knowledge of a topic, you can often times hazard a guess and be correct!

yes, who want sto be a millionaire seems to be a popular choice!! So long as you know when to walk away with the money and not risk it all, a person could do quite well!

I wish "Wheel of Fortune" would go the way of the dinosaurs. That stupid show's been on for as long as I can remember, and it's gotten more and more annoying the longer it runs. I used to like "The Price Is Right," but Drew Carey's really ruined it for me.

I think, yes, they're going exactly that way. In my country there were many game shows about 2-3 years ago and they were very popular. I still remember how we gather with whole my family in front of the TV and waited the show to start- shows like "Who wants to be a millionaire?" or " The price of the truth", they were very actual and now there are only 2-4 shows left, but they broadcast them not every day, but just twice or three time in a week! I don't know why have they gone down, because of the financial crisis or something else, I don't know, but they really go down

Yes, I definately think gameshows are dying out.
I've always wanted to be on a quiz show like "Who wants to be a Millionaire" or "Jeopardy!" It seemed like there were a lot more similar gameshows when I was a kid, but know there are hardly any still on TV. :/

well..at least those few classics have stuck around. I say give it another few years and once agian there will be a resurgence in game shows again....granted they will probably be just as short lived as the last ones.

I actally kinda miss 1 vs 100 that one was pretty good. But i can remeber so many like dog eat dog, or deception(i think it was called) that were cancelled so fast because they were lost among the sea of game and reality shows out there.

Yeah, unfortunately that is what happens when things become a fad. Something ets popular, then all of a suden the market is overwhled with knock offs of the same thing, then NONE of them do well.....entertainment needs to realize that good things come in small packages...and they should keep them that way..

Yes, I agree with you that game shows are not as popular as they used to be. I think this is a common theme with most shows on American shows. There is a certain kind of genre that is popular for a while. The tv producers then jump on the band wagon and over saturate the television channels with these specific type of shows until the public gets tired of them.
I'm sure that there will probably always be some type of game show on television but not at the level that it once were.
I used to enjoy shows like The Price is Right and Who wants to Be a Millionaire.

hi, yes i do think gameshows are something of the past now there are reality shows and medical shows and crime drama shows. and plus with gameshows i did not know for a long time that the winners had to pay taxes on the prizes that they won I think that can get really expensive. i used to like to watch the gong show and hollywood squares.
