UK General Election, 2010 - Televised Debates

It was announced the other day that the leaders of the three main political parties (Labour, Conservative and Lib Dem) had agreed to a series of televised debates in the run up to the election of 2010.
Do MyLotters from the UK think this is a good idea?
Do MyLotters from the USA think televised debates add anything to the process?
Does anyone think that smaller parties (such as the Greens or the SNP) should also be represented, and if so, on what terms?
Discuss!

Hi MJay, I actually think just a few televised debates should be the only campaigning allowed by MP's and all the rest of the money they waste on trying to get themselves elected put to better use. The whole thing is a joke how much they waste and how many hidden backhanders they owe favours for afterwards. One evening of question time, News night and channel four news should just about take care of it, with a five minute plug socket each.
Now, I don't know where that other discussion was but I asked if you'd ever been to Albania and am really interested in a reply, so would you respond here please.

I totally agree that MPs waste a vast amount of money. I do think that 'grass roots' campaigning is important, though - it's not all about party politics and big TV debates.
I'd like to see much more political programming on television, including some of the smaller parties. I think the danger of televised debates between the big three is that it further cements the political mainstream, which has shown itself to be largely corrupt and ineffectual.
As regards Albania - it was on the 'abandon England' thread.
And yes, I have been to that part of the world several times. Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro - it's just my kind of place. I know that the history is "colourful" and that there are some problems in the region, but it's got way more going for it than England.
In my opinion.

a slight improvement on party political broadcasts (there is nothing that makes me switch channels quicker) but only slight. well if you are going to have lab,lib and con you might as well have the smaller ones as well (and the snp isn't that small in scotland) to drivel on with the rest. if they had to deal with tough questions it might be interesting but i suspect the debates will be 97% complete waffle.
