Poll Watch: The Latest ABC News Polls Just in Time for the Holidays: Confidence Matches 2009 High It may not quite rate as a Christmas miracle, but consumer confidence approached the holiday on a high note this week, rising to match its best level of the year ? including an advance in ratings of the buying climate to their best in 20 months. In a sign of some hope for retailers, 30 percent of Americans now call it a good time to spend money, up 9 points since late October to the most since March 2008. Ratings of personal finance also are up. But views of the national economy pull confidence back down.

October was a year after the big crash, and some feared a repeat of last year. When they saw this wasn't the case, some felt better about our future. The other big thing is health care reform, many insurance, and hospitals have been waiting to see what this would bring, and have said that if the current bills passes how it is written, they will increase hiring due to demand.

I totally agree. I saw where the insurance companies will be happy due to many more customers. And hospitals will be happy because there will be less crowding of the emergency rooms, therefore less charges will be passed on to those with insurance and those who can afford to pay the tab. It looks like a win-win for a lot of folks. Thanks for your response.

Lets all hope that this is the case, and it is a win win for everyone involved. To often what a bill says and what it does aren't the same.

It really is hard to spend money, when you don't have any to spend. I know there are people that are buying, but cannot see how sales can be so great, so many people aren't even working.

How does a poll that says the economy is looking up mean the economy is actually looking up?

Perception means a lot so consumer confidence, while maybe not HALF the battle, is at least a start. The economy can't grow without people spending money. When confidence is extremely low, even those WITH money don't spend it, or don't spend nearly as much, especially on things they don't absolutely need. Annie
