To be honest, I don't really know. I guess it just depends. Can you tell where I am from by what I type here? Maybe not, but I'm trying not use some of the "key" words I usually use.

I'm an outlier in a variety of areas, and looking at my overall cultural Identity, I probably resemble a shibuya-fashion nut as much as I do a Detroit-er. Of course, my accent has the nasal quality you find in the northern midwest, and I find it relatively easy to identify someone's origin based on their accent.

I try to write professionally, and I know my spelling and grammar are good, so unless I was doing a 'dialect' piece, I wouldn't give away where I came from. I try not to use colloquialism in general writing, as on the internet, your audience is worldwide, and what is easily understandable to one person could be complete nonsense to another.
Speaking is different. Although I haven't lived in the Midlands of England, where I was born, for more than twenty years, people still pick up on my accent. It's been watered down with Devon and Cornish dialect, but it's still identifiable as a Black Country accent.
