There is a program at the high school here called ROTC, was wondering if they have this program at your schools. It is a great program for the kids to get into, it teaches them right from wrong and helps build their ego, gives them a sense of belonging. I have 2 grand daughters in the program here, and they are do make you proud when they are taken to places like Arlington Cementary and they place a wreath on the unknown soldiers grave, and they see the white house for the first time. Or my oldes marches in the parades that they have here carrying the United States Flag. So far they have worked in the community to earn money for trips to Washington DC to Colorado, to Arlington Cementary, to Navel Bases, to Florida for 5 days. Some of these kids would never have a chance to do these things if it wasn't for this program. Their parents could not afford to send them, the ones that can't afford the cost it is payed for by the extra work they do thought out the year. They collect food for the food pantries, mow elderly peoples yards, pick up trash all over town, etc. They are at the flag raising at the Elderly Housing on Vetrians Day, collect money for the children at Christmas so that they can buy gifts for the children in the Children's hospital, they also go dressed up as some of the cartoon characters to the hospitals to entertain the sick children that are there. To me this is a good program and I am so proud that my 2 are in it. WAS wondering if others here have grand children or their own children in such a program at their schools. What do you think of the program.

I think it is a wonderful program but I don't know if they have those kinds of programs here in Quebec. Anything that is education to me is a good program.

I don't have any children or grandchildren. Therefore, I don't have any involved in the ROTC program. They offer it at our local high school. However, they didn't when I was there. I wish they had, though, because I would have liked to have been involved in it. The only problem was, I was in band and we marched in the parades so it would have been hard for me to be involved with both. It sounds like the ROTC does a lot more than what I thought they did. I knew it taught you a lot about military life but I didn't know that they went to Washington, D.C, collect food for food pantries, collect money for children at Christmas, etc. I think it's a great program. The reason why I think it would have been good for me is because I've always been such a sensitive person and it might have helped me to overcome this to a certain degree. In other words, it might have helped me to learn how to deal with difficult bosses and coworkers in future jobs. I have been fortuneate to get to go to Washington, D.C. and Arlington Cemetery three times in my life. I went with my parents the first two times. The last time I went I was with a tour group. Arlington Cemetery and the tomb of the unknown soldier is really something to see. Kathy.

Oh the food pantry thing I like, they collected 650 cans and cartons and boxes of food on this last collection, they always clean out my shelves, when they do that. My daughter said give them the good stuff, who knows one day we might be standing at the pantry door needing help, lol. It wasn't offered where I went to school either. I am basically a shy person, and I think it would of helped me in that way also. During the summer here every other Saturday belongs to the ROTC, the girls are out pulling weeds, and mowing grass, or any thing that they can do to help the elderly. They do it because they want to, not because it is demanded by the school. There is the awards banquets too, where their rank goes up. Just find it hard on the butt sitting on those bleachers for 2 hours watching them get their new ranking, the parents go down and stand behind the child and the pins or wings are given to them to pin on each child. My oldest went the other day with a group to fly in a fighter plane, and do a refueling in air training act. The pictures she had of the plane beneith them was amazing. She has been offered a full 8 year paid college education by them, I think that is great, she has nothing but excellent grades. But she would have to join the service to get it and she is afraid that she will be sent to Iraq. I think she is making a big mistake in not taking them up on it, after all she will be in school 8 years before she even has to go to service with them. Iraq hopefully will not be there to fight and she was told as being a doctor she would not be any where near the front lines. But it is her decission to make.

I don't consider myself a shy person because I sing solos a lot. I still think this would have been a good program for me because I get my feelings hurt too easily. Like I said, though, I was involved with band and I couldn't be involved with both. We had a pretty rough band director, though, and it would have helped me learn how to cope with him. I hope you have a Merry Christmas tomorrow!Kathy.
