Where to say in Goa?

I know that it's high season in Goa. But I am just a backpacker, and I would like to know if there are any cheap and clean places to stay in Goa. I have found real cheap rooms which were extremely clean and beautiful and spacious in Varkala. But I haven't found the same in Goa, and finally had to stay in an expensive one in Condolim. But, is there anybody who has experienced already about Goa and lived in a clean guest house that doesn't charge much? It's a very low budget trip for me this time.
