Alice's First Discussion! Bugs!
@GoAskAlice (5827)
December 25, 2009 2:00pm CST
As promised, here’s my first discussion!
There are lots of topics to cover, so my plan is to break them all down and start discussions on each and every one of them. We’ll be talking about news, blogs, tasks, discussions, and so much more, but it’s important to stay on topic so things don’t get out of hand.
This discussion is about bugs. No, not cockroaches or flies or ants (oh my!), but things that are broken and need to be fixed, or maybe things that just don’t work the way you’d expect them to work. I’m not looking for suggested enhancements - but I will in many other discussions, I promise! – I’m looking for broken things.
Talk to me about the bugs you have found on myLot. I want to hear about everything that is broken so we can put those awesome myLot programmers and developers to work! Tell me about bugs in the tasks, bugs in discussions, bugs in uploading photos, bugs in the interest categories, etc. If there’s a bug, I want to hear about it!
I’m so excited to hear from all of you!

Hi Alice and welcome aboard the discussions.
There are many of us who are counting on you to set several things straight.
I am aware of the following bugs:
- The profile views as stated in the profile are incorrect. I promote my profile and know how many unique views it receives as they are counted on the sites that I use. The number in my profile itself is far from being correct.
- I am not receiving notifiers for Best Responses.
- I am not receiving notifiers ever for some discussions that friends starts while for others I receive them all. Those concerned are all set to 'on' and we have even tried removing ourselves and re-adding each other to no avail.
- Tasks - why are there so many sign-up tasks when the FAQs (and a previous discussion by myLot) say that they are not allowed?
- The rating system is one huge bug, especially since the last change was made. It is unfair that all users, no matter how active they are, can only be rated 11 times in one day. This is biased towards those who post less.
That's all... for now

Hello mysdianait, and thank you for the welcome!
I will ask the developers to research the profile view discrepancy. That's very interesting!
From what you are saying, it sounds like there is more than one bug with the notifications. I will pass this information on to the developers too.
Your concern with the tasks is not a bug. Please report the tasks that go against the guidelines, just like we ask you to do with discussions, responses, comments, and images and we will remove them as soon as possible.
Technically the way the rating system works is not a bug, but I can understand why you feel it's unfair and unbalanced. Let's save this topic for a future discussion as I have many lined up.
Thank you so much for your feedback!

Whe the developers feel that they have fixed the problem with the profile views, is it possible that we can be informed? I will then test it out and see if it has been corrected

If you start responding to discussions I am sure you will know much more about bugs by own experience. Mylot is sooooo slow...it makes me remember my first year with Internet connection...in fact I am not sure how long it will take for my respond to load......

Alice, I have been a member for over 4 years. The slowness seems to have inproved slightly is all in my opinion. It has it's days where things load immediately for me then other days where it takes a long time. Just wanted to infer this opinion to your questions here. Thanks.

I've been noticing it today too. I see you have been a member for a long time. How would you compare the speed to say a year ago? Two years ago?

Hi Alice for the last two days I think the worst bug for me anyways is loading our posts, it just takes forever . for example I loaded a response and watched the time and it went one minute, two minutes, three minutes and the color that shows its loading was maybe three fourths of the way across and there it
remained. so I gave up and went on to respond to a different
discussion and lo and behold the other had finally loaded. now I was waiting for the discussion to open and the same thing happened, one minute, two minute and on and on. I do not know if its mylot but do not think its my firefox browser as I went back to internet explorer and this time mylot did not load at all, made no pretense of loading. So I tried on another site and my computer moved swiftly so it has to be something in mylot itself.
I know some people complain about firefox but no I think its in mylot itself, its so frustrating as you do not know whether or not your response ever loaded until you check response I made, and its usually there. What gives?

I don't think it's a Firefox issue either.

Hi, Alice. though I'm aware there has been some bugs in mylot I would like to discuss adding a new feature to mylot so members can feel more secure and open while posting. the new feature should be a delete button along side old topics that will allow members to decide if they want to delete there old post after a 2 weeks of responds viewing, and that member may keep there earnings for there old post, I think that a lot of faithful mylot members will like the idea, and I hope that mylot will consider this idea for 2010.
Thank you for giving members the chance to express there thoughts ideas, and view points. happy holidays.

You have a good point there Alice, though I still think it would be nice to have a delete option you could maybe make it so the topic still remains available but listed it as anonymous that way if a particular member has chosen to deleted it from there personal topic list it may still receive response as an anonymous post. I dont know but I think something could be figured out.
Anyway thanks for taking the time to respond to this, Alice I'm sorry if this post is miss placed I know this topic is for discussing bugs only and I'll no longer post this subject here thanks agin.

Hello apples99,
This is not a bug. You are talking about adding a feature rather than fixing something that is broken, true?
I'll have a discussion up in a few days where I will ask for just this sort of thing.
Meanwhile, consider this: What if someone comes along and finds your discussion and is really excited about finding someone else who wants to talk about the same topic you do? Do you want to take away their opportunity to find you? What if 20 more people do the same? I'd hate for you to miss out on that!

I don't know if this could be called a Bug..But this is one option I would like to see in mylot..Editing our posts..I mean some times I make certain mistakes-it may be spelling or Grammer-and only after posting,I realize this..So it will be better if mylot provide this option..of editing our unresponded posts..

In keeping with what others report as delayed loading, a bug that may be my browser or system or may be MyLot is the multiple post error. As Hatley mentioned, I will post a response, it appears to take a million years to load, and then when I check the discussion, Lo and Behold there are from two to four copies of my one comment. It is embarrassing to me to look like I kave posted the same thing many times over.

Hello GardenGerty!
Just to make sure I understand: You (like Hatley) wait forever for the page to update showing your response or comment and then you view the discussion and see multiple identical posts? Do you do anything while you are waiting? Do you hit your stop button and then hit "post comment" again, or do you just wait?
I am really hoping some of this stuff happens to me!

I dont know if I am right that there must be no mentioning of sites and asking sites where to earn a little money. If there was no prohibition then good for those who wanted to earn for some more from reference to other my lotters.

Yes, Alice. I believe that it is concerning what Lamb was referring to. It is where I will go to change the layout to. It is like adding colors by the color code. I have seen many users profiles colors updated. But mines never will. I will work on it again to see if I may have any luck with it. In the meantime, I will wait for you to look into this matter. Thanks Alice!!

I don't understand about interests. At first there seemed to be interests that covered a broad subject, now more and more I see parts of each subject being broken off into new interests. So I am confused, do I place a new discussion in the older subject category or do I place it in one of the new ones where it has broken from the original interest? Please understand that I have only been here a little over a year so what went on before I have no knowledge of.

Savypat, the fact is that anyone can create an Interest (even if an almost identical one exists). I can understand your confusion! (As a result, I now take very little notice of the 'Interest' category that anyone posts in and, when posting discussions myself, I try to select the broadest category with the largest number of discussions.
There's an old chestnut in the software fraternity that says that 'if it doesn't crash the system, then it's not a bug but a feature!' I could make a somewhat crude comparison with alpacas' reproductive equipment (I don't know whether llamas have a similar peculiarity!) but I shall restrain myself ... I'm fairly sure that you will know what I mean if you breed the animals!
I have no doubt that Alice will get round to discussing 'features' such as the 'Interests' categories. I am ready and waiting!

Aside from the speed issue that has been talked about over and over again. I notice when my browser crashes. (this being usually with firefox) and I'm in the middle of typing a reply or discussion, and I restart the browser and restore the session it takes me back to a blank page and gives me an error saying I have to have a ranking over 500 or more to copy and paste. Problem is I wasn't trying to copy and paste anything. Why is that?
In tearms of speed I would like to point out, at least for me, I notice it more if I try to use Flock or firefox. When I Use IE, the speed is faster. It has to be an issue with mylot because other sites I don't have this problem.
And, yes I've done extencive cleaning of my system, browser, and done everything to optmize my internet connection. So I know its not that.
Perhaps the over use of flash adds is part of the problem? It can cause a lot of sites to lag.

Hi kaylachan!
When you restore your session, are you still logged in? Can you recreate the problem - that is, make it happen? If so - or if it happens again - can you copy and paste the link for the page here so I can try to make it happen myself?
I don't think the speed issue is your computer either. Too many people are concerned about it for it to be that.

Wishing you a very happy Chrismas and New Year-2010.

I don't think I can successfully, recreate the problem. I can't predict when firefox will crash or what action will cause it to crash. And, quite frankly I don't want to cause it to do so.
Right now I'm using IE, because of some issues unrelated to mylot. However, if it happens again I'll do my best to give details as to how it happened.

Hey Alice, nice to see that you are here. This may be a thing that many people don't use, but I am interested in the blog feature, and I see that blogs can only be accepted after they are four months old.
However, there are only a few blogs in the blogging feature, and when I asked around when I was new in how to add your blog to the blogging page, most often than not, no one knows about it. But because I am a blogger, it would be great if I can add my blog to mylot. My blog is around two months old. Is it possible to make the four month old limitation down so that more people can join?
Thank you very much,
Namelesss_

At one time my anti-virus always said that myLot is a 'green' site..meaning a 'safe' site but then all of a sudden it went to 'yellow' which is a warning when looking to find out what is was it is the icons and smilies etc that are on the site, which do cause bugs and adware cookies..so that is something you could look at..also the 'words' highlighted in blue do they also cause bugs..am not sure...would love to know, it would be good if you could look into that. Happy Holidays its lovely to know we have someone who is close to Crash take over..we were all close to him and miss him...

Hi Alice! Wow, starting Christmas day! Don't get overwhelmed, we'd like you to stick around for a long long time! We have lots of stuff and suggestions to bring to your attention over the fullness of time...lol.
I don't generally have many problems here, although once in a while I do notice slowness. About the only problem I've encountered is in posting pictures to discussions. I can upload pictures, give them titles, descriptions and tag lines. When I go to post the discussion frequently the picture is not there. I get no error message saying why. Sometimes I am able to add another reply to the discussion and the picture will post fine...so that leads me to think that there's nothing wrong with the picture itself. Is there a reason why this happens?
It's nice to have some one here for us now. I've seen too many discussions deleted when members are simply asking other members for help. Mylotters are a wonderful resource for helpful information to other myLotters, as you've seen just in this discussion. I've frequently though it was counter productive to delete these discussions, but now that you're here I guess that becomes a non-issue.

I'll chime in my vote here, too. I have also had hit and miss with posting pictures. Mostly miss. I have only successfully posted 2, or 3 I think. I just gave up, because the page tried to load and load and load and then did not. Very frustrating. And yes, embarrassing when you told the OP that you were posting a pic for them.

Yes, each picture is done the same way. In fact, I take all of the pictures with the same camera, they're approximately the same size, and I fill in all of the information requested for attaching them. It's embarassing when by reply references an attached picture...and there isn't one. Because of the intermittant problem, I don't post many pictures now.
In the descussion directly above, can you say why those 2 discussions were deleted? I'm curious, since I don't see anything wrong with them.

This isn't actually a bug, but it can be considered as one. Why don't you make better copy/paste protection. If I want I can copy/paste by turning off javascript in Mozilla Firefox. I think you should make this better protected. I know I maybe shouldn't have said it, but there isn't another way to let you know that many people know and abuse this "hole" in the system.

Hi fadolf: I know this isn't actually a bug but i have noticed this before, and it's something that can be controlled specially if this could mean that a new member has the possibility to create new discussions by simply copy/paste what others have done and well, it's not fair to create a certain number of post using this technique. Thanks for making me remember about that. Hope this will be fixed. Hope you are having a nice day. Merry Christmas/ Happy Holidays. Take Care.
