What would you do if your friend is attempting to commit suicide?

I have a friend who's experiencing so much difficulties in life. He already suffers too much depression that almost kill himself. And it doesn't stop there, for every moment hard times coming, he always think of killing himself. I always try to lift up his spirit, giving advices, and inspirations but seems like no effect.
What would you do or say if you have a friend that is always thinking of committing suicide?

I went through this syndrome years back, and I still remember how much I suffered from inside, just for the fact that I was feeling lonely and depressed. Depression can do a lot of things to you. But, I had a friend in school who stopped me from it, and talked me very beautifully out of this situation and I am still thankful to him wherever he may be now. He was one of my best hostel mates and he just helped me through the situation.
You have to keep talking him out of it, and just try making him happy. Give him an assurance that there are enough people who love him, look up to him. Just keep trying and don't give up, and keep giving him enough confidence.
