My daughter is 15 years old. She went behind my back and got her tat done. I was wondering was it legal for her to have it done without my permission? She got it done in the bronx but won't tell me where. I could not do anything about it at the time. it was already done and over with. I was pissed at her for it as well.

In New York you have to be 18 with out parental consent and 16 with parental consent. Unless she forged your signature on something and the person giving the tattoo did not know that she forged it then it was illegal on the part of the person giving the tattoo. I am pretty sure it is still illegal even if he did not know she forged it. Keep an eye on that tattoo for infection. The last thing she needs is a staph infection or a disease from dirty needles.

When I let my 15 yr old get her nose pierced, I had to be right there with her...in person. They watched me sign it. I also had to show ID and they had to see my daughter's birth certificate.

Hi Sharon, In most states it is totally illegal for a 15 yr old to get a tattoo even with parent's permission. In most states the person has to be 18. For piercings, I think they have to have parent permission until they are 16. If she had it done at a place of business then you could go after the business. Unfortunately, there a many people who do this out of their home and don't care how old a kid is. Hopefully if this is what your daughter did, they used new and sterile needles.

It is illegal to Tattoo a minor in any state and most states you have to be at least 16 even with a parent with you. The problem is most kids do show a fake ID which means if you press charges on the Tattoo artist and she used a fake ID then He could press charges on your daughter. The problem usually is not the Tattoo Artist it is usually the Kid who knowingly is doing something wrong.

yeah that is illegal. im pretty sure the law is that you have to be 18 to do it without parental permission and in some places they cant tattoo children under 18 even without parental permission. you should really press her on who did it because if the needles werent clean she could get a disease from it, and if she gets an infection someone should be held responsible. you should just tell her that you need to know so you know that it was a clean environment.

yes its illegal and thats sad she should have talked to you and thought it through a little more. I got 2 tattoos when i was 21, they are small and tasteful--i had wanted them for a long time but there was no way my mom would let me and she still doesnt like them. and i dont know what she got or where but you might tell your daughter can you imagine an 80 year old woman with saggy skin, wrinkles and a tattoo? if you got a tattoo of a persons face - the nose is small now, but if she gains weight or the skin droops- it will look like karl malden or Pinocchio! its more dangerous to remove the tattoos than get them.

I would assume it would be illegal in any place for a minor to get tattooed without parental consent. But like you said, it's done and over with and there's not much you can do. If it's any consolation, she might grow up years from now hating that tattoo. One other thing, you can check the city ordinances or specific laws in your town and you can file a complaint to the proper regulating agency against the tattoo parlor where your daughter got hers. At the very least they can get penalized for tattooing a minor without your consent.
