Bring Back Boats!

I really wish we could go back to the time of widespread boat travel. 100 years ago, people used to cross the atlantic on big ships. It took a long time, but at least you weren't cramped into a tiny seat with 200 other people, wondering if your plane could crash or get blown up by some crazy fanatic.
I hate that this option has been basically taken away from us because of the popularity of air travel. There are still ways to sail, but it usually involves cruise ships, where you visit several countries in a few days on their schedule. I want to be able to take a boat wherever I want, get off, and stay as long as I want, then take a boat home.
I don't want to have to put up with lousy service, uncomfortable, sleepless flights, and constant worry about security and crashing.
Anyone else agree?

It would seem most people would disagree with you on this, otherwise there might still be a passenger shipbuilding industry in the UK...It seems to Me that when travelling to a foreign destination, the majority will put up with the discomfort of what airline travel has become for the speed and convenience of getting to their destination quicker,as opposed to a 1 week minimum round trip (across the atlantic)..Passenger ships are largely Ferries or Cruise ships now,as people need to get to an oversea destination and want to bring their car along,or where time is not a deciding factor in getting there..and with the increasing popularity of cruise ships,it's only a matter of time before "cut price" becomes a deciding factor in your travel arrangements,as it happened in the sky..(Look up "Ekranoplan" to see what a combination of a ship's capacity with the speed of an aircraft looks like!)

I understand the need for saving time, but I'm a housewife, and I like to travel with my 4 year old. I don't need to hurry to be back in time for work, and my child's life is worth more to me than saving time. If a boat's engine quits, it doesn't crash!

Recently I saw an advert for a trip around the world by ship. The journey would be 14 months long and ever so expensive. So if ship travel came back prices would have to be reasonable. Ship travel is slow and some seas take many days to cross. The average working person had just 20 days vacation from work per year. Therefore plane travel is popular. In 24 hours a person can fly from London to Auckland. By ship that trip would take about six weeks.
Flying is less enjoyable due to security measures like no drinking bottles. Lately some airlines have crashed. A few days ago a man tried to blow up a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit. I was so happy to hear that some other passengers put out the fire on the plane. My last trip to South Africa. Our flight was meant to leave at 7 in the evening but it left at 1 in the morning due to fog. The seats on planes are uncomfortable and there is usually little legroom in economy class.
My favorite way to travel is by train. It is a shame that some countries don't have a rail system anymore. In a number of countries the train service has become more limited. I wish trains and ships would become better for traveling with convenient routes and cheap prices.

indojo hi I am with you, bring back boat travel. I would not get on a plane now for any thing unless it were a dire emergency what with all the looney toons wanting to blow up American planes. I have never taken a real ship ride, just the boat from here to Catalina Island not a very long trip. I would love to go on a trip on a boat, even one of those cruise things, you could relax and enjoy yourself and be comfortable doing it too.
