Frost on the trees in Nevada?

Who would have thought it would get this cold in Nevada? We left on Christmas day at lunch time for Fallon, Nevada, about a 3 1/2 hour drive over Lake Tahoe. And when we got about 4,000 feet in elevation or so, we started seeing snow. It was in the 40's on the California side and dropped down into the 30's on the Nevada side. The next morning when we went to breakfast (late - after 11 AM), it was 18 degrees in Fallon. And on the way back it was mostly in the 20's until we got to the California side, where it promptly went right up into the 30's even though it was higher elevation. I had no idea that Northern Nevada got this cold in winter. Brrrr.....

Hey dawn! I had no idea that Cali even got that cold or got
snow until I came here to Mylot and heard all of you posting
about getting snow and having to deal with freezing temps! I
used to think that was the reason that people moved to Cali and
Nevada! That was such a weird surpise to me! But, you still have
such beautiful scenery, but you also have the bigger earth quakes
too! We had two here in NY where I live about 20 years ago! And
they said NY NEVER gets earthquakes! What a surprise to
be "shook" out of bed at 6:30am! And that ear piercing noise!
I have never felt or heard anything like that ever!

You are thinking more of southern California. It's not uncommon to see a winter day in the 70's or 80's there. And I've seen my share of earthquakes too!

hi dawnald well when you start talking 4000 feet elevation in winter time yes its does frost for sure. I was born and raised in South Dakota on a farm in the prairie and the elevation there on flat land is 4,321 feet, and we got frost in September sometimes.
so yes it could well be that cold in Fallon Nevada. yes Northern Nevada does have cold weather in the winter but still better than out on the Dakota prairies . glad I am still here in Southern california as I do not much dig snow cold and ice. brrrr. But I would love to go back to Lake Tahoe some summer as its so pretty there.

Now that I wouldn't expect. I saw the same thing in LA a couple of times though.

Wow, that's totally unusual. The weather here is similar to Tucson except here we do get snow every 4 or 5 years ..... it freaks out all the permanent residents who've never seen any before and none of them know how to drive in it.

Northern Nevada huh, Dawn? Cool and awesome. I would love to experience snow someday. Maybe I should go on a holiday and experience the coldness in Nevada, hmmmp. 18 degrees? Wow.... with the occasional hot and humid weather in my country, turning air-con to 18 degrees is a welcome idea. Hmmmp, that's mostly the lowest ever for most air-conditioning. But I'm guessing 18 degrees in Fallon is way cold! Hmmmmp..

I love to do jigsaw puzzles. (Whoa, stand still; this really is On Topic--I swear! )
One of the ones of which I'm most fond is of a winter scene set in the Grand canyon. Also, I've been to the bottom of that crevasse, & it is freeeeezing cold down there at night--in mid-Summer! I have another puzzle, another photo, of snow in the Western plains. And still another in Monument Valley. Snow, snow...snow, in all.
So even desert can see snow. Not sure from whence all the moisture comes, but it does. Four corners gets snow. Chaco Canyon, too.
It's a beautiful sight, snow & barrel cacti, & saguaro....gorgeous! The snow reflects the colors of the rocks, sand & plants, & looks warmer than elsewhere...a most charming effect!

We were there over 20 years ago and yep, we found out the hard way that you had to hire mules in advance! If you want to see the Grand Canyon with snow, here is a link to our photos: http://rddcn.multiply.com/photos/album/207/Our_Trip_-_Christmas_2008

I wish I could see it like that. I only saw the Canyon once, & it was in Summer. Halfway down the easy switchback trail (well, easy going down...), there was a small house by a shady stream. In the house lived a man named Victor, who had been born in the canyon, & had never been above the rim.
In his house were all sorts of things tourists had left behind rather than lug them back up. He gave me a good canteen (to replace the leaky one I'd bought in Ozona, Texas--it was a complete rip off). There were all sorts of bedrolls, tents, & other heavy items regretful people left with him.
His place was also where the rented mules stopped to drink, & rest a bit. It was pretty hot.... By the way, if you want a mule, hire it 6 months before you need it.
I often wonder if he's still alive, or even if he ever decided to see what life was like above the rim.
But oh, the colors...even though I was literally lifting my pants legs the next day--& it took all day!--to get back to the top, & my knees froze up for 3 weeks afterward, the whole experience was worth it. I guess I knew I'd never get to see it again.

neither did i. but the only part i've been in is Las vegas. we went several times a year to gamble in las vegas and from AZ here that part always felt warmer then here and AZ is usually pretty warm except in Dec. and Jan. in pheonix here it gets sometimes to only 40 and 30 degrees a few nights, then warms up to 70 or 80 in day. maybe its because desert weather is just very unpredictable.

I did not think Nevada got that cold but I get if it is in the mountains of Nevada then maybe that is why it was that cold.

Northern Nevada in general gets pretty cold. Even southern Nevada can get snow. Last year I was flying to Burbank in December and my flight got delayed. The plane originated form Las Vegas and it had snowed there!

Hiya dawnald,
Can imagine how cold it gets over there in Nevada we have had some Weather going very cold at night after a relatively mild Day. Going eleven degrees or more centigrade below zero every night.
Will probably Snow here I think this is usually the kind of weather that provokes it to Snow again. Hope it waits till tomorrow.

I don't know how many of you are familiar with the weather in Southern Oklahoma, but those of you that are, were just as surprised as I to when it snowed for christmas. In Southern Oklahoma the winters are usually mild. At most the winter will provide a bit of ice, sleet, and slush. But this year, 4-5 inches of snow fell from the sky.

I'm not too familiar with the weather there, nope. I would have expected that it would normally be colder.

I guess it has something to do with the lake effects or the mountains. It sounds about like us here. I am already tired of being cold.

Not a clue. I was thinking something to do with the Sierra Nevada and air currents myself....

I always think of Nevada as tumbleweed country Dawn. But I guess that it is entitled to get frosty there too. Here today it is very frosty A lovely white rime across the countryside and city. We went into town first thing and there was hardly a soul around - blissful. I hope that you had a good time anyway.

had a vague idea that nevada was always hot. i got a similar surprise when i went to work in poland and discovered that summers were hot (well hot compared to scotland) even in the north east because the stereotype is that it is a cold country (the winters are. very). incidently most of the poles who come over here join in the national hobby of complaining about the weather (well the rain) - i think their stereotype might be that britain is warmer.
