I just have to tell everyone about my newest toy, a new netbook. I've been wanting one since they first came out and played with one set up as a display to see if it "fit" me. Well, it did. And, it does. And, I couldn't be happier.
Have you thought about netbooks? Would you like one? Do you have one? Do you think they're too tiny? What are your thoughts about Windows 7?
Actually, I thought I might have trouble typing on the smaller keyboard. It's a little smaller than a normal keyboard but not much. It took some getting used to but it didn't take long to get the feel of it. If that is what is holding you back from getting one, don't let it.
I LOVE this thing! It's so much lighter than my old laptop. It also has a faster processor so I'm more than pleased. I'm still getting used to Windows 7 but, from what I've seen so far, it is AWESOME.
If you have one of these cute little netbooks, what are your thoughts? Is there anything about them that you particularly like or dislike? I dislike nothing but really like the light weight.

I think I would like a net book except for the small screen. I need big fonts and a big screen to comfortably see everything. I also heard that you have to sign up for a one year contract with an internet provider, which I would not like because it's $60 a month! Perhaps I misunderstood the review that I heard on the radio? Kim Komando's show had that on and she's usually very informed.
I love the small size of the net books I've seen but I couldn't work with it. Too bad, because my computer takes up half my desk!

We got a couple of inches last night after a dry Christmas and expecting a little more today, nothing like you have! I'm glad you're all cozy inside with your new toy, stay warm and happy!

Not long after writing that it was snowing, the sun came out. I hope it stays! Yeah, we've had plenty of snow. What we got a week ago last Friday is still here. It has melted some but is still about 12 inches deep with a layer of ice on top from the freezing rain we got this past Friday. It looks like we're both in for a bad winter.

We have a wireless modem or whatever it's called. We have a desktop connected by a cable, but we also have that modem to be able to connect to the internet with a laptop because of my husband's work. Actually, if you got a Wifi signal where you live, no matter who it belongs to, as long as you aren't locked out of it, you could use a laptop or netbook with it.
My husband showed me how to connect to the internet by plugging in my cell phone so I can get connected everywhere I'm able to get a phone signal. Anybody can do that. All you need is a special cable to plug into a USB port on the computer and into your cell phone.
Maybe you saw a commercial for a specific plan by one of the internet providers like Verizon or AT&T? As long as you have a cell phone (not pre-paid), you can connect to the internet on these netbooks or laptops.
Oh, good grief! It's snowing again! Geez, I just looked out the window and it's really coming down! Snow wasn't called for today. I guess the great snow maker thinks we haven't already had more than enough for the entire season!

Hi there Mentalward
I am quite happy with my Laptop
I have seen one of those Netbooks and I have to be honest I am not to keen on them
My Neighbour upstairs has got one, they look really cute lol but I think I rather stick to my Laptop
But I am glad that you like yours and if you are ok with it then that is really good
Hope you had a lovely Christmas

Different strokes for different folks. That's what makes the world go round, eh? I'm sure the laptop people are very glad that there are people like you in the world or else they'd have to get into a new business. LOL
My husband bought what he said is called a "portable desktop" which is nothing but a HUGE laptop. (You know what they say about men and the size of their toys, right?) He also has a huge truck, bought himself a huge TV, etc. Sad, so sad. Tsk, tsk, tsk.
But, I love how light this is. That's the main reason I wanted a netbook. The keyboard is really not much smaller than a normal sized laptop but it weighs so much less. It's much more convenient for me. Maybe, if I didn't have fibromyalgia, I would stick with a laptop but, well, we have to adjust or go crazy, right?
I had a great Christmas, gabs. My family and friends all made it, despite the weather. I hope you and Gissi had a wonderful Christmas, too.

Everybody who tries out the new Windows 7 says that it is a great operating system. I would find a netbook too small. I use a laptop most of the time but also have a laptop. It takes me a while to get used to those smaller keys, but if I am away, after a day or two, I find I can can use the smaller keys fine. Maybe getting the new Windows 7 soon, but I do like my XP. - Derek

Well, I can tell you this, my husband could possibly be the pickiest person on the face of the Earth, fell in love with Windows 7.
He bought a new laptop last year and had XP installed on it because he loved it so much. He tried to convince me to have XP put on this netbook but, after reading a lot about Windows 7, I decided to give it a try.
Now, my husband wants Windows 7 on his laptop. He works on computers as a software design engineer. He knows everything there is to know about them. He's also very stubborn and extremely opinionated. His falling in love with Windows 7 really does say a lot about it.

Exactly, Alice! I loved XP as well but, now that I'm getting used to Windows 7, I have to say that it's the best of the bunch. Anyone who loves XP is going to love Windows 7 even more. They just have to try it.

I have considered getting a netbook, but was unsure how it would fit into my lifestlye. I plan on traveling more in the coming years, and it sounds that this would be a great alternative to toting around a laptop.
Is Windows 7 really great? Is it hard to use? It seems like there is so much new technology coming out, I find it hard to keep up.
@mentalward (14690)

30 Dec 09
It is hard to keep up, that's for sure! But, in my opinion, Windows 7 is by far the easiest to use, the most user-friendly of the bunch. I had trouble going from Windows 98 to XP but going from XP to Windows 7 was a breeze! It's "tidier" than XP.
If you are going to be doing a lot of traveling, I'd say that a netbook is the way to go. My husband is perfectly happy using his cell phone internet while traveling but I get frustrated over that small screen. This one is smaller than a laptop, of course, but I haven't found it to be hard to use at all and I not only have bad eyesight but I'm also overdue to have my eyes examined for newer, stronger glasses!
If the print on any website seems too small, I just use the Ctrl button and the mouse wheel to make the print larger. For the most part, though, it's easy to read.

In the global period we are not leave with portable device that name notebook. with this device we can connected with all people in the world throughout in every times n every where also every we want.....
But the negative effect is the decreasing of social sense in our environment or frequently we call individualism........that's right.

I agree with you about that, Hillazza. Social interacting, IN-PERSON social interacting, has decreased quite a lot because of the internet.
But, I can't get out nearly as much as I would like to because of my disabilities, so meeting and interacting with people on the internet is essential to me. Without the internet, I would be extremely lonely.

I hope you still think it is great. I have not seen anything on Windows 7 although I hear it is nice. I haven't thought about getting one, I am guessing I would have a really hard time seeing the screen. Do you have to buy a special internet card for them, or do they come with one?

Thanks for the info. I have no idea how it all works. We do have a router because my son has a computer, but I was not sure if that would be all we need. My other son keeps talking about wanting one, in fact he wanted one for Christmas, but there was no way I was buying something I know nothing about.

My husband is the computer geek in the family but I do know that you need a wireless internet connection with these netbooks, the same as with laptops. If you live in an area with a lot of others who have that, you can tap into their connection. Apparently, it's not illegal but some people do block their internet service from being tapped into by neighbors. You can use these netbooks wherever you can get wifi service. Most restaurants and coffee houses have them, as well as hotels.
At home, I believe you need a router or something like that. I'd have to ask my husband exactly how it works, though. If you already have wireless internet, you don't need anything additional for these netbooks.
I've seen a commercial where you could get a discount on a netbook if you signed up for their service (it was AT&T or Verizon, I believe) but you don't need to sign a contract with them if you already have an internet service. You just need the capability of having a wireless system and I THINK that's with a router. All I do know is that we have a router but whether that has anything to do with our laptops or not I couldn't say. We have one desktop, my husband has a laptop and I have this netbook and they all work. That's all I really care about. If you want, I'll ask him to know for sure if it's a router you'd need or not.
As for the screen, it is smaller, yes, but you can make the pages larger by holding down the ctrl button and scrolling up or down with the scroll button on the mouse. I think it's up for larger and down for smaller.
Oh, and yes, I still love it. It doesn't get as hot as my laptop plus it doesn't leave it's impression on my lap after I've been using it for awhile. lol

I bought my wife a netbook just recently. It was a my gift for her. Well, she like it very much since its very light and handy with a plenty of memory. The operating system is also windows 7 and definitely great. As for me I am using a standard notebook with a pre installed windows vista. I recently upgraded it to windows 7 after noticing from my wife' netbook that windows 7 is really amazing. Now I am enjoying the great features and performance of windows 7.

I agree with you about Windows 7. It is wonderful. I haven't heard anyone say anything bad about it. As a matter of fact, my husband, the computer geek, also a very stubborn man who doesn't like to upgrade to anything new, said he wants Windows 7 on his laptop now. He has Windows XP Pro on his laptop and refused to get Vista but wants Windows 7 now. That says a lot about it.

We have a couple of laptops but one is older and the other just has Windows XP. I've been looking at laptop because we have a new PC but I have such bad luck with computers. I don't care what kind it is, I will find a way to download something that my stupid virus software just opens the door and lets in to destroy my files. I'm going back to a note pad and paper. Its much safer.

I just wanna say everyone thinks
the antivirus they are using is the best antivirus around
just ask anyone, and they'll recommend you whatever they are using!
But when it comes to security and sensitive data
you are never too well protected.
Now I'm not gonna tell you wich antivirus I think is best,
because they all have their pro and cons,
and McAfee is definently one of the most decent ones.
But be careful cuz there are several viruses and trojans
he does not want to see. And then there are a few viruses,
that can actually disable it.
However I would have tryed to have a different antivir,
simply beacause if one pc gets infected and files are transferred
between them the other one will surely get infected as well.
While having a different antivir on each pc ensures at least one pc
could be better protected. If you are looking for a decent free antivirus,
go for avast home edition or avira, and definently stay away from AVG.
But your best bet to keep your system secure is to use several scanners,
and hence is not recommended to install more then one antivir at a time,
go for the online scanners. (Plus everyone hates to install/reinstall/restart).
I was quite impressed with certain software hosters
wich state to have scanned the kits wich we want to download
with 3,5 and up to 8 different antivir solutions.

I've had problems like that. Not too long ago, I got both a worm and a trojan at the same time. One of them was trying to get my banking information! Luckily, my virus program told me about it. Yeah, it told me AFTER it let these in! That was AVG, not the free version, either! Now, I have McAfee. We've never had a problem with McAfee. My husband has some very sensitive information on his computer for work and needs the best virus protection he can get and insists on McAfee.
Actually, I prefer using paper and pen for most things. I like holding them in my hand. It just feels safer that way. So, I can understand why you prefer them. My husband keeps wanting me to write grocery lists on my cell phone and I keep telling him that I feel better with that paper in my hand. He just doesn't get it.

Hey Marti,
I'm so glad to see that you are finally having fun, instead of worrying or stressin out over your disability. I would love to have a laptop and windows 7. This Dell computer I have seems to to have a mind of it's own and doesn't want to do what I want. Lately I haven't been on the computer anyway due to health issues.
So what else did Santa bring you? I can't tell you how happy I am for you. xoxoxo

Hi Leenie. You know, I had thought of all kinds of things I'd like to do when this money came in but, now that it has, I'm afraid to spend it! LOL This netbook is the only thing I've bought for myself and that's only because my laptop was on it's last legs. (I gave it to my youngest son anyway because he was using his brother's computer. He may get a few good months out of it.)
I'm still trying to figure out what to do with my time now that I'm not stressing over that disability thing! LOL But, there's still one thing I need to get straightened out with them. They're still taking Medicare Part B out of my checks! I sent the card back right away telling them that I did not want Medicare. I wonder how long THAT will take to get straightened out.
My husband has a Dell, what is called a "portable desktop", which is a HUGE laptop. He's had technicians come out three times now to fix some major problems and he's only had it one and a half years. He's had to get 2 new hard drives, a new fan, memory card and something else. Nope, I didn't want a Dell. Mine is an Acer which is what my laptop was. I never had a single problem with it.
What else did Santa bring? Well, I got Windows 7 Home version and MS Publisher along with MS Office for my new computer. Hubby bought that. (He's such a computer geek!) He also bought me one of those exercise pads for the Wii game system that my son bought me 2 years ago. I haven't tried it yet because I want my shoulder to heal and I'm still hurting a bit from shoveling that snow. Yeah, yeah, I know I shouldn't have.
I got Stephen King's newest book, Under the Dome, from my oldest sons's girlfriend. She's a real sweetheart. I guess my son told her how much I love Stephen King. I had mentioned that I wanted some board games so we all could play them together and got a new Monopoly game from my youngest son, along with a Beatles t-shirt. He knows how much I love the Beatles. He couldn't do much since he hasn't found steady work yet but he's been working for me part-time and also has found some other temporary jobs, like shoveling that snow! He's doing what he can but I feel so bad for him because it's so frustrating when you want to work but even top executives are now looking at employment at McDonald's. He's doing okay, though, finding small jobs here and there. I hope he can find something soon where he could get health benefits. I know that you know how it is these days with job hunting.
I would have been happy just to have everyone here for the day to share Christmas dinner with me. I've always had a hard time accepting gifts or spending money on myself.
Now, about your health issues. Is there anything I can do for you? I hate hearing that you're having even more problems! I pulled a muscle (I think) in my right shoulder right before our massive snowstorm hit and it's STILL hurting. I had had surgery on that shoulder about 12 years ago so it may be weaker because of that. I just hope I haven't torn my rotator cuff again. But, with your chronic problems, I do worry about you! A torn rotator cuff is an inconvenience but your problems can really be serious. Did you hear any more about those tests you had done? Please let me know if there's ANYTHING I can do, okay? I want so much for you to feel your best.
Love you tons, girl!

I have Window's 7, it came with my new laptop I bought a couple weeks ago, I like it but it's not that much different from when I was using Vista. I see a few differences here and there, but nothing that life shattering that Microsoft really had to upgrade so soon. I personally prefer XP, I never had a problem with it and loved it, and anyone who still uses it, way to go!! I've heard of a netbook but I personally have a notebook and prefer a notebook or well as I call it a laptop lol. Congrats on your new toy though, anytime anyone gets a new computer it's exciting, their so much fun and of course you can use it for many different things whether it be work, fun or both.

I have been looking at getting a netbook or mini as well. I didn't have the money this time around so I'm paying off a laptop from Arrons. But, I'm going to try to get some savings going and in a few years should be able to afford one. It will take me about two months to get used to the new keyboard layout, but I can deal with that. The keyboard is really surprising me. It is different but really not that much smaller than a normal laptop keyboard. I've heard some people saying they couldn't get used to the smaller screen but even that is adjustable. You can make everything larger by holding down the control key (ctrl) and moving the wheel on the mouse. I think it's towards you for larger, away from you for smaller. I have pretty bad eyesight and really do need to have my eyes examined for new glasses soon but I'm doing fine with this feature.

I love it because it's so small, but I am a smaller than average person. This works GREAT! I'm still getting used to the keyboard but it's not bad at all. I thought they were a lot tinier than those on laptops but they're not really that much smaller.
My son bought a computer with Vista. He said it's not too bad except when you want to do something and it asks you like a dozen times if you're sure you want to do it. He also said he loves Windows 7 because you tell it you want to do something and it does it without driving you nuts first. He is going to look into buying it for his desktop.

Hahahaha! Yeah, we're getting old when laptops are old-fashioned. Good grief, my first TWO computers didn't even have an internal hard drive! (I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I remember the way computers used to connect with each other, using a telephone!)
Everyone has what's right for them so I guess it's a good thing that computers come in all shapes and sizes. I loved my laptop when I first got it because it was so small and portable but now it seems HUGE compared to this one. LOL

What is the brand of your netbook? and what is the price which you have paid for this. In India, a netbook or Acer or Samsung costs about Rs.17,000 to Rs.18,000.(roughly about $400)They also throw in an external DVD Writer, and some small gifts. The screen is 10.5 inches.Mostly these netbooks run on atom processor.
I also want to buy one of these, but I am waiting for the prices to go down to less than $200.

I have an Acer and it cost about $400.00 but that is only because I wanted Windows 7 Home version and not the Starter version that came with it. I think it was about $300.00 with the Starter version. I did not get any extras with it, though. I haven't seen any around here that offer things like an external DVD writer.
But, my netbook is linked to my desktop so I can put any DVD or CD in my desktop and upload it to my netbook. I could not be happier. I know it will hurt when I see the prices coming down, as I know they will since these are so new right now, but I really needed something lighter than a laptop and the one I have weighs a little less than 3 pounds.

Hi mentalward. Congrats on your new toy!
I've thought about getting a netbook, but I wouldn't bother to get one until my current computer (a 17" notebook) conks out on me. I like the fact that they (netbooks) are small, but not too small, and lightweight. One thing that kind of turns me off to them though is that netbooks don't have a disk drive...or do they?
Have fun with your new toy! Happy mylotting!

I don't think any of them come with disk drives. I rarely used the one on my laptop so it doesn't bother me. I have a desktop and my husband linked it to this computer so I can put DVDs or CDs in my desktop and open them on the netbook. Cool, huh? Sometimes, I'm very happy that my husband is a computer geek. LOL
Of course, you can always get an external DVD drive and plug it into the netbook.
The keyboard on this really surprised me. It's not much smaller than a normal laptop keyboard. The only problem I've had switching is that I sometimes hit the Enter key instead of the shift key. But, I'll get used to it, in time.

Hi Chevee. Life has taken a turn for the better, now that Social Security has FINALLY given me what they've owed me. I'm still thinking about going after them for interest, though. I have a friend who used to work for them and she said they should give me interest and she advised me to sue them. I'm just happy right now to finally be receiving those monthly checks. It's been a long, hard road!
But, my husband just hit me with, "We owe taxes." He's been awful about filing income taxes. I filed the last 3 years but he hadn't filed for 7 years before that! Also, he never paid taxes on the profit he made from the sale of his old house. They've finally caught up with him. I guess he thinks I'll pay them but there's no way! He can work with IRS and figure out a payment system.
I loved Windows XP. I have that on my desktop (which I hardly ever use... it was my husband's before he met me... OLD!) and had it on my laptop, which my son is now using.
I LOVE Windows 7. My husband even loves it! He wants it on his laptop now, after playing with it on my netbook. I told him to pay taxes first, then he can get it. lol
Other than the netbook, though, I haven't been spending this money. I've been paying off medical bills and have an appointment tomorrow with a dentist because I desperately need a root canal/crown with at least 2 more following that one. I have dry mouth caused by fibromyalgia, plus I clench my teeth when I'm stressed, causing tooth problems. I know I'll be paying at least $10,000.00 to get my teeth to where they should be. THAT HURTS! My teeth wouldn't be this bad if I had been receiving disability all these years because then we could have afforded the co-pay for our dental insurance. (They only cover up to $1,000.00 a year, pretty bad but better than nothing.)
What a way to take out the old year, huh? Sitting in the dentist's office with him telling me how much money he wants. At least I can finally get them taken care of.
I hope you have a Happy New Year and things work out exactly like you want them.

I still have to see just what are the capabilities of this new toy. So far I am very happy and think it's going to do just what I want it for which is to surf the web and do my poeting online. It's very light and portable. Santa was very very good to me.

Aren't they the coolest little things? I was surprised by the size of the keyboard, too. I'm still having a bit of trouble with the shift key and tend to hit the Enter key instead but I'm slowly getting used to it.
I would have been very happy with what it came with but my husband, who thinks he knows best for everyone, insisted that I get Windows 7 Home version (the full version), plus I did want Microsoft Office and Publisher, so he bought them for me. He told me I couldn't have used Publisher if I just had the starter version of Windows. Well, okay, since he paid for it. LOL I do like creating websites and graphic art but would have been content to do that on my desktop. Now, I can do it anywhere I want on my netbook.
I LOVE how light it is! That was the main reason I wanted one. The laptop I had was just too heavy if I was doing a lot of myLotting or anything else. Plus, it was heavy carrying it around. (I have fibromyalgia which makes everything seem much heavier than it really is.) I can take this little thing down to our lake next Spring when I go fishing and get some myLotting time in.
I've found the games that came with this and they are so cool! A lot of them were just trial versions, of course, but there is so much these little things can do. I'm very impressed!
See, guys, size does NOT matter!

Hiya mentalward,
Glad to see you have something you like. Netbooks are great gadgets to have of course. I personally have not got one which does´nt me to say I won´t ever get one.
What´s Windows 7 like by the way is it really that good?

I couldn't be happier with this netbook. I'm getting used to the keyboard now, although it's really not much different than a normal laptop keyboard. Just a little smaller.
I like Windows 7 a lot. My husband is the biggest stick-in-the-mud that you could find and he loved XP. He tried to get me to put XP on this computer but I told him I wanted Windows 7. Now that he's played with it some, he's in love with it! He's a software design engineer so he knows computers and he wants Windows 7 on his laptop now. So, I'd have to say, yep, it's really that good. LOL
