I'm a big fan of Adrian Monk as you know, but I forgot how much more paralyzed he was by his various fears in the beginning of the show than at the end. He came a long way, especially since he got a new assistant. Sharona treated him more like a patient, I think, because she was a nurse. Natalie just treated him like her boss. It was much more akin to the relationship i have with my PCAs. The best part of his relationship with Natalie to Monk, I think, was that she didn't see him as a conflagration of his fears and phobias. She didn't baby him as much as Sharona did. I know Sharona loved him and it wasn't her fault, she was just trained in the institutional way of treating people which is being ultra sure that they are safe and never undergoing any risk.
Revisiting these early episodes was a treat for me because while you can see that Adrian still has a long way to go even after the finale, he's come a long way. I think he would even say so himself. What do you think?

I agree completely, he really did come a long way. But I like the fact that it was a long slow progression and that it didn't just happen overnight.
I love this show and am certainly sad to see it go. I'll miss it.
I do however like the way that it ended with Monk finally solving Trudy's case and discovering and meeting her daughter.
I also like how they brought Sharona back for an episode, it was nice to see her again. And I like the way that her and Randy's story was wrapped up.
And, I like the way the last episode ended, much like the first episode began with Monk worrying about the stove being turned off.
All in all, it was one of my favorite shows on TV, and I hope I can find something else as good to take its place.

Yes he did come a long way and I think the show was great for doing that. They showed how he could get over his fears little by little and it should actually be inspiring to anyone who has similar problems. Natalie definitely treated him differently and was probably one of the main people that pushed Monk past a lot of his fears. Perhaps that is why they invented Natalie in the first place, to help Monk.
They definitely ended the season on a good note. You can see Monk is happy, with his new "daughter" now, and he is continuing to work. I liked that Randy moved on to better things too. I'm glad the show didn't end like some do - with everyone moving away and saying Goodbye. Instead, it was more like a "life goes on" ending. A great way to end a great show :)

I watched one or two of the shows way back when they first started the series but didn't really care for it...then recently I came across one of his new ones (the one about his wifes secret) and I was hooked. I've only gotten to see a few of his episodes but I do want to see more of them. I get a kick out of how he has a system for everything and how organized he is even while solving crimes.
