I have been following this series frenetically for the past whole month. I watch both old and new series on animefreak.tv. You can choose both English subbed and English dubbed though I strongly recommend you go for Japanese track and read subtitles (those two ladies who do Edward's and Alphonse's voice are amazing).
The Brotherhood series are newly made last year, following closely to original manga series, whereas the first FullMetal Alchemist anime series (broadcast from 2004 to 2005) goes different way at the early stage of the story, produces another plot and leads to a certain ending. Since the manga series is still ongoing, the Brotherhood series won't end for another 6 months at least (judging by the progress of manga, the day the Elrics reach their goal still a way to go). Nevertheless, the old Fullmetal Alchemist series, which is produced as a quite alternative story, run 51 episodes and concludes its ending in an anime movie called Conqueror of Shambala. Make sure you finish all 51 episodes before the movie and have some tissue by hand. (Yes, we all cried.)
Personally, I prefer the original story since it contains more serious issues and plots are more extensive. The first anime is good in terms of developing characters' inner feeling but it is slightly out of tune at the end. Anyway, since Fullmetal Alchemist was elected the best anime of 2009, it is worthwhile to spend time on it.
Hope you find this information useful.

Indeed. I can see a lot of developments even WAY early on with the plot when it comes to Brotherhood when compared to the old anime. I like Brotherhood better. The adrenaline keeps on pumping because you won't know what to expect with each episode. It's addictive to watch!
