How do you choose which area to volunteer in?

Homelessness? Animal rights? Community? Schools? Hospitals? Nursing Homes? How do you decide where to volunteer? Do you choose the cause that most interests & concerns you? How do you typically pick a place to volunteer?
I recently volunteered (well, today, that is) and I'm shocked to find myself wanting more. Wanting to do as much as I possibly can with the little free time I have available to me (hey, every little bit counts!).
How do you pick a cause, though? And what's the cause that YOU fight for?

I have always believed that it is our responsibility to help those who can't help themselves. Children, the elderly and the disabled. Who would have thought that I too would join the later! I choose what I do by public transportation. I have a car and I'm not afraid to drive, busing is just cheaper. But there was the day when I coached soft ball for kids, taught religious education and helped neighbors get established in day care, all at the same time! I did that for 6 years. Now I find myself in the position, again to give others a hand.

Which one really calls out to you? I love cats and I want to combat Type 1 Diabetes. I also attend my local university and I advocate for education.

I think this all depends on what interests you the most! I love computers and I've been looking at ideas involving helping others with their computers. I'm looking to get into the industry and thought that this would be a great way to start and gain some invaluable work experience in the field. I love animals too but I guess you have to ask yourself some serious questions like: Do you want to volunteer in order to just help out and give back to the community? If this is the case then you can volunteer for anything. However, if you are seeking to gain entry into a particular field of study then you should try and volunteer in that field. In any case I wish you well with whatever you decide to do. Good luck. Andrew

I choose which cause to volunteer on from what I am passionate about or where my heart is at. I have volunteered many times and I have to say I honestly have a heart for kids. So I am hoping that next year I am able to share my time to does kids that are unfortunate.

I have already tried volunteer works and its really provides a meaningful experience. Aside of that, its also provides contentment on my part. I usually choose to volunteer in the church functions and in line of my career or work due to the mere fact that these are the important aspect that i found interesting and fulfilling in my life.

Hi. If I've got time, I would always like to volunteer to go and help child at the orphanage house. It's so pity for them that they don't have a parent at younger age. I would like to entertain them and try to make them happy while I'm being there with them. They are just child and like a white clothes. They know nothing and it is our responsible to colour the white clothes to make it better for their future life.

Its great to hear that you are volunteering, and that you want to help more!
I personally like to give my time to the causes that mean the most to me. I love kids and have worked in the special needs community for quite some time. So it seemed natural that I would also vomunteer my time that way. For people who dont already have a goal in mind or a place to start, you might try looking into your community Lions club. They are a great organization where making a difference is the goal, but its a wonderful place to socialize and meet others who might have common interests. You could also bring some of your own ideas and help a larger group in the community with more people!
Again, hats down to you for volunteering.
