So when you hear the expression once in a blue moon do you think it is just an expression. I did until I read this little news article. On New Years eve we will experience the same thing which doesn't happen very often just as the expression is used for things not happening that often. It means the second full moon in the month. We had one full one on Dec 2nd and the second once will be on New Years Eve. Isn't that interesting.

Happy New Year and wonderous Blue Moon to you.
I was going to start a discussion about a blue moon, too.
Some people believe that when many things aline like a New Year and a blue moon, then maybe it's a sign. Of what, I do not know. I hope it means that this will be a wonderful year for all. An unusually wonderful year would be great!
I think it only happens once every 3 or 4 years, something like that. I think there is a song or two with blue moon in it. Maybe I should research more about it. Take care. Will read other people's responses, bet theirs are more interesting than mine.

Hi natnickeep. I knew about blue moons but we don't hear of them often because, well, they just don't happen that often which is where the expression "Once in a blue moon" came from.
I also saw that we are going to have a blue moon tomorrow night. I think it's kind of cool that it's happening on the last day of the year. We're not only getting a blue moon tomorrow but here, where I live, we're also getting MORE snow. We've already had about 4 feet of it this season.
This year is certainly going out in style, huh?

Yes I am in Kansas and we also are supposed to be getting more snow. We have over a foot still out there from the day before yesterday.

Yes I have heard of this before. I think it happens a few times each year. Interesting also how December 2 was my birthday, and New Year's Eve is my favorite holiday event of the year, and we have blue moons on each day. : )
I don't hear the expression used too much anymore, to be honest. Only once in a blue moon do I hear it! Ha ... Happy new year to you, be safe and enjoy!!

Ya it is something my mom said a lot during my childhood so it is an old expression. funny thing is I just called her and told her we were gonna have a blue moon and she had no idea what it was for real or what it meant. Even though she had always used the expression.

Honestly, until today, I never actually knew what a blue moon was. I had always thought that it was the hue of the moon at given times throughout the year, much like a harvest moon is. So, the blue moon thing is honestly the first thing that I learned this year.
I read earlier that a blue moon for the new year is something that is incredibly rare and it will not happen again for the next several years.

I knew we were due to have a second full moon this month but it's not the original blue moon that has been reported for centuries.
The original term Blue Moon was when there were a series of four full moons in a season of three months, the blue moon was the third moon in that series.
The term has been to denote the second moon in a month after being wrongly reported as such in a science/astronomy magazine in the late forties.

Well thank you for the educational response. Like I said I just learned of the term as a scientific term and not just a saying.
