About three years ago a mylot member started a discussion about fortune cookie messages that made people think. I thought this was pretty interesting, and it not only made me think back to significant fortunes I'd gotten, but also the events which made them more than just ink on paper. Over the last five years I've recieved two fortunes that I can quote off the top of my head, that's how inspiring they were for me.
The first one goes: "Nothing in this world is accomplished without passion." I recieved this fortune almost five years ago while studying writing in NYC. I was really bummed by the constrants of the program, and didn't feel I was creating anything of substance. This line inspired me to leave the program and work on literature I was actually interested in.
The second goes: "You don't puruse happiness, you make it." I got this fortune a couple months ago while volunteering at a school mostly populated by black and brown low income children. I had just engaged in a conversation about how education is looked on as a stepping stone for a career, as opposed to enriching and providing pleasure for the individual. At the same time I watched the children I was working with turn a mundane assignment into play that not only helped them learn better, but to which they now prefer over playing games.
So how does your most inspiring fortune go? What was the event that made it this way? And how, if at all, has it affected your life?
