Do you know about the asteroid that heads to our planet?

Hello myloters! If you are a yahoo member,maybe you have seen that Russia has targeted a asteroid heading to our planet.And i`m thinking this is the start of the big thing that will happen in year 2012..Do you think so ? But in the station it says that the asteroid can hit our planet in 2029,so maybe this is not so connected with the world ending ..But a 270 meter asteroid is not small,so if it hits it will destroy a big part from a country..But NASA has said that the asteroid can hit it 2036..So crazy..And this means its still unknowed when the asteroid will hit..So the chance hitting in 2012 is not out..So anyway what are u thinking of this ? Are u thinking its connected with the world ending,or its just a little warning for a country :) Happy day - joro1best

I think you are refering to an asteroid named "apothis". It is due to fisrt pass by our planet in 2029, fairly close in astronomical terms, below the orbit of some of our higher satelites. depending on where it passes by it may pass even closer when it comes around in it's orbit in 2036, there is a tiny tiny tiny chance it could hit us in 2036 if it passes through a very small range of area in 2029, but it is only a very remote chance. At 270 meters, it certianly isn't going to end life on earth or even cause global catasrophy. but it is large enough do destroy a city or cause a stsunami if it hits in the ocean. the advantage of having the technology to track these things like we do now is we can watch them and know well in advance if we are in trouble and can do something abut. If it passes through that small "keyhole"' area that will bring it around to hit us again, we will have 7 years to develop a plan to move it or destroy it before it can do any damage. I haven't heard of any asteroid in 2012 though, as far as I know, they aren't tracking anything along those lines.
