If you could choose, would you rather work 12-15 hours a day for a couples weeks then have a week or two completely off, or work a normal 9-5 schedule all the time? My mom is a graphic designer, and recently she had a huge project to do and worked overtime for weeks on end, but now she's got a 6-day weekend completely off, and will go back to a normal schedule the next week. I think I'd rather work long hours and then have a couple days off. I wouldn't be able to stand a "normal" schedule day after day. The days off would give me time to relax and "refuel," and by the time I got back to work I could easily go on and on for hours being productive.

I was actually trying to visualize myself on that situation, and that would be really great maybe.. But on my work, ahhhh?.. is being on call everyday is included?.. :(

The 9 to 5 schedule is more to make the system work which involves a whole lot of people in and out of an organisation. Having said this, not all jobs are project oriented where one finshes one project and gets a break till another one starts. We cannot pile up work which is done as a routine which will happen if we opt for what your Mom did and so one likes it or not it all depends on what kind of job one handles.

Oh I would so love to have a schedule where maybe I could work two weeks in a month and have the other two weeks off to catch up on things at home and such but its just not possible for me to ignore the home front and work say 15 to 18 hours a day. Its good that your mom had the freedom to pursue her job full time but at my home, the universe would literally stop if I just worked throughout the day and late into night without doing the other chores. So for my, my 10 to 6 office schedule five days a week works best. I get the weekend off to refuel.

wanting to have a good long rest, that 12-15 hours work a day would be great! the bottom line here is not actually the number of hours that you will work straight but its the complete and satisfying rest. this way you can really recharged a lot and would always be enthusiastic at work. one problem with this long hours sched is, it only goes to those who are physically fit. happy new year olisaur.

I would rather work long hours and then have a great break because the thing is not only do you have to go day after day but even with vacation time its hard to spend time with family and friends so I feel like if that was my schedule then more time can be put with the people that I need to be spending time with.

Ok,if the salary is good enough, I could give up all the holiday.

I'm like you, I'd rather have a little more of a .. variety in my schedule. Of course, in reality, even as I say this, I work 6 days a week at the same company - and I've done this for 2 1/2 years now. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't LIKE a crazy, mixed-up, and spontaneous schedule.. At least every once in a while it would be nice. Although, I have to admit, I wouldn't like not being guarunteed hours. My other job (at Macy's) is one that's on-call, meaning depending on how well business is doing and how much they need my help, I could work anywhere from 0 hours a week to 40. I never know until just a few days before my shifts, which can be frustrating at times. At least with my dry cleaning gig, I have a stable amount of hours each week!

Yes I would rather work the 12 to 15 hour day and then get a week or two off. That would be so much better then working day after day the same hours with just the weekend off. It makes it more interesting because with the time off you can go on a short vacation to relax your body and mind so you can get back on track.

I agree... I would much rather work long hours for a while and then have a mini-vacation. I'm the type of person where once I start on a project it's hard for me to stop, so I usually end up working 15 hours a day anyway! A normal 9-5 schedule is very boring, and then you have to take time off for doctors appointments or your kids school events that take place during the day. The days off would be like a little vacation and give you time to recharge.
