Admin for a Day: Friends, Private Messages, Referrals, and Flyers
@GoAskAlice (5827)

Hi again!
Just like the last couple of discussions, here's the list of topics that have already been covered so there's no need to cover them here:
1. You'd like to be able to sort your friends list on your profile.
2. You'd like to be able to delete more than one friend at a time.
3. You'd like to be able to turn notifications on or off more than one at a time.
4. Private messages aren't always sent or received as they should be.
5. myLot codes aren't always retained in private messages so you end up seeing the actual code rather than the formatting or the smilies.
6. You'd like to be able to delete more than one private message at a time.
Do you think it's easy to request someone's friendship? Do you appreciate the notification you get when someone sends a friends request or accepts your friend request? Is there anything you would like to change regarding requesting friends, accepting/denying friends, your friends lists, or anything else friend-related? Along those lines, one of the advantages of adding someone as a friend is the ability to send a private message (PM). Do you send PMs? Do you like the way the PM system works (aside from what is listed above)? Do you see anything that you'd like to improve?
How do you obtain referrals for myLot? Do you understand how to use the myLot referral links? Did you know you can link anyone to any page on myLot and append your referral link?
Do you use the flyers? Where do you use them? How would you like to see the flyers change? I received a suggestion to incorporate flash into the flyers. I thought it was an excellent suggestion. What do you think?

I have one BIG wish for the private messaging system actually, though i mentioned it somewhere in your last thread, it probably got burried. I would LOVE to be able to send a message to mutliple recipients in one shot.
I know you said you don't see the message tags going away, but that would be my chief gripe with the messaging system, I have never ever used tags in a message nor have i ever needed them. I don't believe most others do either.
As for referals, I usualy get them by begging, lol. My most recent referal is my girlfriend. my last referal was my Ex girlfriend (no longer active) and the other 3 posted a few threads and never came back. I would like to see a system though that gives others the referals that were under a user who's account was banned or was canceled. I don't know exactly how it would work, or what the criteria would be for redistributing the orphaned referals though.

Thank you, xfahctor, I think you just saved me the trouble of posting, ! I was reading through the responses and, one by one, my own requests and gripes were being checked off.
The ability to send to multiple recipients was, I think, the last on my list. Mind you, I can see that it might be open to abuse by trolls and spammers - but that would be what a report button would be for.
Along with the ability to send to many people would go the need to be able to select friends' user names from a drop-down list. Would it be good, also, to be able to show (or hide) the names of the other recipients ... Sort of the same as the CC: and BCC: functions in email?

Hey that's a good one!
Giving those refs to others when users are banned or cancel is a GREAT idea!

I think maybe there should be a discussion limit on it (the number next to your name is not a post count but a discussion account.) Maybe 400 discussions to be able to send to multiple people? It would be like how they block copy-and-paste for those users under 500 discussions. If myLot moved to a checklist type of system like Facebook, it could be easier but they could put a limit on the number of people, such as 50, 75, 100, etc.
As for the orphaned referrals, they could be randomly distributed with those that are more active having a better chance of receiving referrals. That way, everyone has more incentive to stay active. They could also add time at myLot, last logged, number of discussions, and even best responses to the criteria.

Hi Alice! This will be short this time, since most of my 'wish list' in this area is already mentioned. In addition to gathering recommendations for all of these changes, will you also be letting us know what is actually being adopted? I know that's not part of the requested information, but I think of it each time I see your discussions and growing lists.
The only additional issues I have with the private messages are:
One, why a sort tag is requested when processing them. If the messages are private, who will be using a search feature to look them up? Are they no longer private once they are posted?
Two, any way to add the ability to attach photos to them. That would be terrific.
Three, any way of getting some new (additional) smiley's to embellish our discussions, responses and replies with?
Thanks Alice. Tomorrow's the last blue moon of the decade (2nd full moon of the month). So all the little things that you only do 'once in a blue moon' will make for a busy day. We're always willing to help...

I don't think you should be allowed to add tags to a discussion unless you have posted into it. It allows for too much possibility for abuse by 'fly-by taggers' negatively tagging.

Well, I don't want open discussions based on any private messages I have, so while I do use that feature sometimes, I just don't tag them. Just to be safe.
And to robertx and cashsolos....welcome to MyLot! I hope you have a great time here and make lots of terrific friends, I sure have since joining.

I would love to be able to sort through my friends lists. I have many who I private message and I would love to be able to put them on the first page. I like it that one Has to add and delete a friend one at a time. This way there is less of a chance of deleting a cherished friend. I do use private messages but from time to time there is a glitz. The only thing I would change is omit the tags on private messages. Why should a private message have a tag?

Hi sarahruthbeth22!
Many people never delete private messages. The tags are there to help those who save the messages find that one they are looking for easier and faster. Hope that makes sense!

I guess I don't know what flyers are... hummm
I do use the PM system, I like it when I need or want to tell someone something that isn't for "public" consumption.
I think if mylot would notify us when we get a friendship request - tho for some reason it does sometimes but mostly not...
I think its fine for newbies to request friends, but like turning off the asking for joining interests, being able to turn off someone's ability to request a friendship after denying them would be good.

hi Alice I know this question has been asked but this is just a bit different. for some reason I cannot delete even one p m and as some are two years old and the people some of them are no longer here I wou ld love to be able to delete one at a time.
I would like to have the use of the flyers better explained to me then I might or might not use them.I do not do referrals as it seems to much of a hassle. I do like the pm system very much. One thing I think may be investigated and that is that someone once posted a pm she had sent to me a nd my answer out in a public dicussion here which I felt is very wrong.Private means private, and this thing led to a lot of bitter backs and forths between users here. this was over a year ago. but I do not think that these messages should be able to be put into public discussions.I do not know how she managed it but she did it and it really embarrassed me as this was private between us.

Wow, it is really great to learn that we could use the flyer set by admin to promote our referals and I did not pay attention to it before.
I see that green flyer under the individual interest, but it is with a question mark on the flyer text. How come I did not see the "get html" under the flyer?
Did I have any misunderstanding there?

how about a block request feature?
I get repeat requests from users that I consider friend collectors and no matter how many times I deny the requesty the just request again and again
I would love to see a way that we can block friend requests from a user
how about a way to send a message with a request so we can tell people why exactly we are requesting them?
how about an ignore user feature for those users that we repeatedly have issues with or are harrassing us?
either that or make the moderators here publicly known so we can ask for a mediator when there are problems with other users?

Hello again Alice, you covered any concerns I have had. As for notifications when I get a friends request, that hasn't been happening. In fact the notifications for other things haven't been working right neither, but then you know that. I mostly want to say hi, and your doing a great job, Mylot Rocks, I am so glad that I found Mylot, I have met some terrific people here. I have several inactive referrals, I don't even try anymore. I haven't had any problem with the PM system, I like how its set up.

So many of the things I was going to say have been mentioned (and put on your wants list) that there is hardly anything left to say.
There is one thing that comes to mind, however.
In PMs at least, if not in discussions, could it be possible to quote HTML code? I sometimes want to send someone an example of HTML but the formatter 'eats' angle brackets! Actually, if you use even one (as a 'greater than' or 'less than'

Hello Alice. It seems to me that I can be accepted by the majority of mylotters here if I send an invitation to be their friends though not always. Even so, it is only an exception. I always accept anyone's invitation to be my friends and I always turn on the notification. I think that I can absolutely receive my friends' email notifications about their discussions and responses if the notification is turned on like I always do.
I used to have some referrals, but they were and are still inactive. I know that the main reason is that they are busy with their work or for some other reasons, but it is ok for me as I myself am very interested in mylot and visit it every day. If I have more time during the day, I do more participation in mylot activities.

I don't think it should be possible to request a friend until you've made a minimum number of posts - too many imes here, I've blithely accepted a friend request, only to get a PM telling me about this great money making/affiliate program they've got.
When I check out the profiles, invariably they've made few or no posts (the latest has made no posts at all). They're just using this site for their own ends. So ... a limited number of posts before people can request a friend (as for c and p/adding smilies) would reassure us these requests are genuine.

I guess overall, there have been very few friends who turned out to have ulterior motives. I just thought it was a bit rich, this guy asking me to be a friend - I checked out his profile and ... nil posts! Nothing! He's still on hold - he gets accepted when I see some proof of intent to post here.
But like I say - it's rare, so probably the current way is best. I am now tempted to accept this "friendship" - just to see what it leads to ...

Hi jazzsue58!
Interesting thought! But what about the people who have very good intentions? Do you think there are more with good intentions than selfish intentions? Isn't it possible that someone could request you as a friend because they also like guinea pigs, David Bowie, and Galaxy Quest?

Hello, Alice. I'd like to be able to reorder my friends list, so that the people I consider my 'best' friends on here - the ones I interact with most - are on the front page. When there's nothing very interesting to respond to, I 'profile surf' my friends to see what they've been responding to. As friends are added in the order we make them, I have to wade through several pages sometimes. All my really good friends would fit on the first page, and it would be nice to have them all handy together.

Hi Alice! I agree too! It sure would make it alot easier to have
those friends who I prefer to respond to most often on the first
page! No offense, but when you have almost 400 friends on your
list it can get a bit crazy! I don't like to delete any friends,
but honestly there are friends who are not as active as some
others! In fact, if my friends waited for me start discussions
I'd end up on the last page too! But, at least I am a consistent
responder and they do know that they can count on me for that!

Hey Alice,
As a newbie I was actually confused by the PM set up. There is only one reply button in the private messages, and in the case of the one I sent, that button was beneath the original message. Since there are seperate buttons in the regular discussions I was worried that pressing the reply button beneath my name would result in me sending a message to myself and not the intended recipient. Although I figured this out, it was very confusing, and the PM directions in the FAQ section doesn't deal with this issue.

And, I never get any notification on my email if someone add me as friend but it's okay because I always check my friend request everyday on mylot. I hope I can send PM to every members not only to friends. Where I can get referrals link? I never check it out. I don't have ability to attract people to join me here. lol. I never heard about the flyers. What is that? That's all. Have a nice day.

There should be a way to delete more private messages,
and more alerts at a time, like recently i had 6 alerts from Alice,
we all know who Alice is right? :)
So i went and read them, and moved on elsewhere,
posted some stuff, did other things,
and when i returned i still had 6 alerts.
And I could only think I should ask an admin about Alice,
cuz at the time I had no idea who she was,
nor why i get so many alerts from her.
Anyway, I decided to go see what was the fire with so many new alerts,
to find out i had only one new alert and 5 older ones.
It seems alerts delete only one at a time,
one for each visit to the alert page or something.
So I'd like to delete all at once after i read them,
without having to visit several times when many add up.

If someone quits Mylot, let's say they haven't been on for months, I wish they could be sorted and deleted somehow.
I do have one friend that I won't delete. She has a relative with Cancer and isn't on for months at a time. So things do come up. But most of the people with less than 100 are just trying to find sites that pay money. Once they find out that they can't earn a living here, just get a little extra money, they quit and I get tons of requests from people who are less than 100. Lately, I've been watching to see if their #s go up. If they don't, I don't bother to add them. They're here for a day and gone. They're the reason I have 5 pages of friends and 4 pages are probably worthless. Must take a lot of room on Mylot for nothing, too.

Simply no longer had time for it,

However you don't have to worry about me,
I'm very sure I'm not on your "friends" list :)
I say its your fault for adding so many
and not weeding them out from time to time.
@writersedge (22563)

31 Dec 09
I do weed them out from time to time, I just don't like taking a day to do it. It should be fast. If people have quit, it should be automatic. Yes, I know there is an activity thing on there, but that doesn't tell the entire story. No, I'm not adding people like I was. I have 5 requesting now and they're under 100, so I will weit and see if they go above before I add them. Why are you judging me? No, you're not on my friends list. Most people over a certain time have quit, but they don't notify anyone. I was giving new people a chance to be my friend, I don't think I should be judged harshly for that, people gave me a chance and became my friend. I was just returning the favor. The time I take to weed people out, I would prefer to be doing other things, that's all. Why do I have to defend myself in an Admin thing anyway? Do you think hundreds or thousands of people should start here and quit in a week or a month? That's got to be part of why Mylot has problems from time to time. I'm sure I'm not the only deleting after a person has been without activity. Trying to defend myself against two people. Geesh. I am not searching the web to put down or belittle your suggestions. My fault, gee thanks.

I think you should make tagging the private message optional. Like if you don't want to tag private messages, you can have the option to turn it off. For me, I don't use the tag.
I think it would be great if you can accept more than one friend request at a time too.
Also, I think it will be cool if we can customize our private messages like the font size, color, bolding, italicizing, and underlining but it's not necessary.

I think it is very easy to request a person to be my friend. However, I don't think that you should have to be friends with an individual to be able to send a private message to a person. There are many times that a person will be talking about another site and since we can't give referral links in posts, you will have to become a friend with them just to get the information from them and sometimes that gets on my nerves.
As far as referrals go, I don't have any and I'm not really in the game to get referrals so those issues are basically something that I am not really concerned with.

I think that there should be an option in the discussion beside the name of the person that started the discussion that says "Temporarily allow PMs" then when you respond in the discussion that person would be able to PM you the link but they wouldn't have to be your friend on here and it would be a temporary thing. Say the button would allow you to accept PMs from that member for a week.

Would you prefer that anyone and everyone could PM you without your permission? That is one of the advantages of the friend requirement with the way it's set up now - when you add the person as a friend you grant the permission to PM. Tell me what you think!

Hi Alice - Firstly, I think this is a great initiative that you are carrying out and will go a long way in further improving MyLot if some of the good suggestions are implemented by MyLot. I have read all the other posts in this thread so without wasting any time, I'll cut to the chase with additions to what may have been already requested for in other posts:
1. Most members write posts within their areas of interest. It will be nice to have a feature where top contributors or the highest rated contributors in a certain area of interest are highlighted on a page so that it is easy to send them requests to make friends with them.
2. A new feature in the form of a forum where newbies get a chance to introduce themselves. Even better would be a feature by which newbies are shown on a page for a limited initial period so that they are given an exposure on the site as well as a chance for members to make friends with them.
3. Once a member accepts a friend request, additional details like birthday and email address can be made visible to those accepted as friends. Of course these have to be added to the member profile first. The idea is that you can wish your friends on MyLot on their birthdays - after all that's one of things that you are expected to do as a friend!
4. I have observed that most members are unaware of the flyers feature or the uses that it can be put to. You may want to provide more information about the same so that members can make the best use of such a feature.
My last point may not be relevant to this topic. I had posted a discussion, "Your top requests for GoAskAlice" which has suddenly disappeared after two days. I presume it has been deleted since it takes the spotlight away from your discussions, though I had started my discussion to gain more participation on MyLot issues. Is it possible to send members like me whose discussions get deleted, as well as hapless members who participate and find that their posts have disappaeared, a message saying, "Your Post Has Been Deleted?!"

Your discussions are deleted
if you don't follow the rules and the guidelines,
so you could prevent all that doing a little research.
As for the newb forum, I'm not sure what you have in mind,
but i won't go to a discussion thread to see several people post:
"Hi, i'm xyz, i'm a newb, who wants to be my friend?"
And why do you want to be friend with someone just cuz is highranked?
it won't help you that much,
in fact it may annoy them if they get too many requests out of the blue
and they may decline your very request if its in the wrong batch.
As for "Your top requests for GoAskAlice" I'm sure it wasn't deleted
cuz it was taking the highlights from Alice,
but because something really important may get posted there
and hence it is not a top priority admin thread
may get dealyed to be adressed.
Also what were yer plans with the input you got?
If your thread has been there for two days...
Also you would have not got more participation,
simply because unlike Alice, you can't send alerts about your threads.

I have no problem welcoming the new users and I also do other things outside myLot as is obvious from my profile. Please don't generalise. Not ALL seniors have the same motivations for being here just as the new users don't either. Some of the new users come to learn about earning sites but then lose their interest when they realise the potential here on myLot. Please bear in mind that there are writing tasks worth $4 each so why bother with anything else?

With each of your posts, Robertx, it seems that you are able to copy and paste before the 500 limit. Is this so? How are you getting around that rule? Or does it not apply to you?
