It shows alot about a person's character if he choses to hide out and not show his face when he owes money. I think you should treat him like a disowned family member until such a time as he wants to pay you back. And for heaven's sake don't loan him anymore money or treat him like he is off your bad family member list.

its never right to avoid your family or anyone else who you owe money.they did you a favour and avoiding would put you in a bad light.money owed to anyone should be paid back at the first possible instance

No, it's not right because it hurts the person you're avoiding after they were generous and caring. We recently went through this with my husband's adult son after I loaned him a very small amount of money. He never pays us back, although he always promises, so this was nothing out of the ordinary for him. Normally he would stay away for a week or two and show up like nothing had happened and we would all move on. This time though he stayed away for four weeks and my husband became very depressed about it. This is his only son and my husband convinced himself that his son hated him. So, I had to step in...call him and tell him to get his butt over here because he was hurting his father. I never loan money to family that I expect to get back and I always tell them not to worry about it when they say they'll pay me back on such & such date. My family is more important to me than money and I would never want a loan to come between any of us.
