dear mylotters,
am living in the southern part of the philippines and in our place there is a very strict ban on firecrackers during new years eve. police and army are never allowed to indiscriminately fire their guns to avoid accidents.
am sure you will like a place like that.
but people seem to like firecrackers on a new years eve because it is a belief that it drives away evil spirits, or rather.. (in my opinion) it is fun to watch the sparks and it only happens ones a year.
there were suggestions to the local government, that to avoid accidents, for them to just have a fireworks display, nobody will touch the items except the experts. in your mind that is very safe isnt it?
but still the mayor didnt approve of it. said that it is a waste of money.
if it were you, would you prefer fireworks display to meeting the new year? it is much safer than holding on to the firecracker itself, or just stay at home and sulk?

Some places around me have fireworks to usher in the new year, but it is much more common that in the US, we do it to celebrate independence day on the 4th of July.
I do think they are safe in expert hands. People or businesses tend to pool their money here to put on the displays. And not many injuries occur. I persoanally enjoy them :))
Happy New Year! ~o--==~o```~Ooo~``^^

Here in the US fireworks are extremely expensive. If that is the case there, it might have been a money problem not just that the mayor wasn't in the mood. The fireworks that an individual can but are very mild compared with the ones a town or city would buy.

hi pat,
if you see some of what is manufactured in my country (these are usually illegally made), you will say that they are like dynamites. they've got different looks each kind but explodes so mightily that anything near it could be destroyed. and i wonder what joy that brings to the person doing the exploding.
people gets weirder and weirder every time.
anyways, i hope people learn and avoid them.
thank you for your response.

Fire works were banned in my state about 40 years ago. This was because of the big danger in accidently starting fires. Plus there are idiots around who injure themselves or other people, or even deliberately injure animals.
However, what our councils do, is allow fire works controlled by professionals.
They need to get a license for every fore work dislay, and make sure thewy arte safety perimeters, etc.
So your idea of having limited fireworks controlled by experts is a good one.
Its not fair to completely ban an actrivity just because there are stupid people around.

dear jennybianca,
fireworks display he said, will only be contradictory to the ban he said.
anyways, for the past years he has been handling new year i give him my thumbs up. there was zero accident connected to fireworks last year. and i hope too this year.
maybe we can do noise some other way - like open the component and play fast songs on cd. much safer.
cheers!

If it's illegal - and the government and the army enforce it, I wouldn't go against the law. I don't think it's a waste of money personally, I love fireworks! I'm not sure what the laws are HERE regarding fireworks, I'm assuming that they're illegal unless you have a license. Fireworks are not generally part of our New Years celebration, but it's unfortunate that they're so important to your culture but still illegal! I guess I would go home and sulk, like you said, because you don't want to get in trouble with the law. But that is a stupid law.
