What would you sell to make extra money?

Hi everyone,
Sometimes we are in a tight spot and in need of some extra money.
What would be the first thing(s) to go if you had to sell anything? Of in a less worse case scenario, if you were looking for some extra bucks?
I have sold college books that I don't use anymore, my little ponies from my collection that I have duplicates of, clothing and much more over the years.

Hi cyberfluf - I am fortunate that I have not had to sell anything for a dearth of money. I do sell stuff though as a part of my housekeeping activities. The largest selling item is books, since everyone in my family is fond of reading and there are hundreds of books lying around every few months. We buy at least a dozen books each week, childrens' books included. It doesn't make sense keeping so many books in the house so I choose to sell them. But I do remember to keep my favorite books back in my library so that I can read them again sometime.
The second item that I sell are games. PSP and Playstation games are not cheap and once I have had my fill of playing with them, selling them partly finances the purchase of new ones! In fact whenever I travel to the US, I pick up a lot of used games as well since they are available at half the price of new ones - getting used games is difficult where I live.
The third consists of electronic items like audio and video players or gadgets that are not used anymore. Every few months there is something or the other which is sold after a new system or gadget comes into the house.
These were the top three types of items that I sell. Others are less frequent like vehicles, furniture and other items which are replaced over time.

Dear Emvy548,
Thank you for your very detailed response. Selling books is a good way to make an extra income, I agree. And selling items online can be a lot of fun aswell.
It doesn't have to be something you do because you have no other option, even though I steered the discussions that way, it's also a lot of fun.
I do sell my own stuff for fun and extra income even when I don't actually need it to keep up. Trading vintage my little ponies is also a hobby of mine and I trade and sell those aswell.

Got your point, cyberfluf! Selling is indeed great fun, after online means to sell them have become popular. Now that you mentioned it, I had picked up a couple Adidas shows for my kid from my last visit to Ireland where I travel on work. But when I reached back home, I found that it is one size too small. I was disappointed but at the same time I realized that I had one more item to be sold on eBay. eBay seems an interesting portal to sell items that you don't need - of course now it is also a major portal for selling new products.
I have also become a member of cafepress and zazzle and hope to design and sell a few things there as well. Oh, maybe you could initiate a discussion on online selling portals and I shall give my views there :-)!

It's a fast and easy way, I have to agree with you. I am not sure whether or not I could do it, but if I had kids and they would go hungry I would definitly consider it. In that case you will do whatever you can to keep your kids healthy and safe. Thanks for responding!

I guess if you are really in a lot of trouble and need a lot of cash FAST, than mylot isn't the way to go. We are talking extremes here, or at least in my case it would only be considered if there was no other way out. There are other options though and I would consider those too aswell.

I would like to mention that if you dont have the perfect point system of high points , you cannot sell anything as people buy only from those who have a good pointer system in shop sites like e-bay.
I wanted to sell a watch but no-one buyed it, it was kept so low cost than the original and good looking also, still no-body cared to buy while other strange looking things were sold easily.

That sounds very true. Some people seem to be able to sell their old worn socks while others can't get rid of expensive antiques. Having a system, an attractive (web)shop and good service are all pointers we must keep in mind. Having a lot of positive feedback on a thrustworthy site also helps a lot.

Why are you selling your clock? because you need money or you dont like it no more?

Hardware like laptops remain valuable even after a period of time, but like you state the newer the item is the more you can ask for it. It surely would be a good option if you were in need of money quickly. It never fails to surprise me how many people will keep interest in these expensive products even when economy is at his worst.

The good thing about electronics like hardware for gaming and mobiles is that there allways is a wide market of people interested; even though they are a luxury item. I guess it's because a lot of people use it or want to use it, but that those items remain at a high price for the time being. So if people can get their hands on them for less money you are bound to sell them. Thanks for responding!

I agree that luxury items would have to go first. The things you use least, but that are worth quite a lot are the things most mylotters have mentioned. It also depends on how they have interpreted the question: some have read it and thought about being in such a tight position that you have no choices and would sell anything to survive, others are pondering about what they would sell first once they need money but it's not that critical yet. Thanks for responding, I love reading all the different views.

I've sold textbooks, novels, toys, and games. I've sold some really small things in garage sales, etc. Right now I don't know what I would sell, in dire straits I would sell anything that wasn't nailed down, I guess.

That's very true, when you are in need of money to buy food or pay bills and there is no other way around it basicly everything you don't need to survive would go. I wouldn't sell stuff that I am terribly attached to if there is another solution though, but I am not that materialistic so there are just a few things I really wouldn't want to sell. Thanks for responding!

Probably video games and maybe my collection of barbies. but would have to be really down and out to sell them. I dont have many collections and not much of anything worth selling. Maybe try to sell some clothes i have outgrown.

I can imagine you would have to be in a tight spot. I wouldn't sell my collection of my little ponies (or a part of it) unless I would really have to.
Sometimes you'll be stumped when you realize what you have, especially the things you don't use, and how fast numbers can add up .

Some of the things I've found out that make extra money quick are cell phones, old toys and games that aren't made anymore that are in good shape, kids' clothes, computers, wireless routers, home decor, video games.....just about anything that is in good shape.
I've sold a lot of different things and it really depends on where you're selling and when (a lot of times seasonal items go easily within the season.)
I don't actually have to sell anything, I just have a lot of stuff that I don't use and started cleaning up for more space around the house. doing that paid for a really nice guitar my son wanted for Christmas so I didn't actually have to go and use my bill money for it.

That's a wonderfull way of turning your unwanted goods into extra cash.
The beauty about this is, in my opinion, that these items are used again and don't end up in the garbage. It might not be the first thing everyone thinks about, but reusing items is also better for the environment. If things are still in good shape, why not sell them or give them to others who need it?
I agree about the seasonal thing, they sell better during the season itsself.

I collected the empty bottles and plastics and some books that are not needed. If I need much money I better look for the items that is quick to sell like foods or beauty products. This are if i was in the emergency cases that i really don't have money.

well to earn some extra money i will sell my old clothes that are in good condition and are rarely woren by me and are now no use for me either they are now short or they are unwanted clothes so i will sell them and i will even sell my notes to earn some bucks , yes i have made many notes regarding many concepts and topics and many people need them , i will sell those notes to someone who is in need of the notes and will earn money through that so i have two ways to earn money - selling clothes and notes.

Those both sound like a good way of making money. I have sold clothes before aswell, especially party clothing that was rarely worn or clothes that I had made and that turned out ok but not to my taste. I have never sold notes before but it seems like a good way to go if you are able to write notes that people would take interest in. Thanks for responding!

I often sell clothes I have bought and new worn on Ebay because there just collecting dust in my closet. I recently sold my old bike that was in really good shape, and some purses I didn't like on Ebay. I actually made some pretty good money off them, considering they were just sitting there unused. I like the idea of being able to recycle clothes, so I usually bring used clothes to the thrift store for other people to get use out of them.

That's wonderfull that you are thinking about recycling. In a counter response to one of the earlier respones I mentioned that aswell. That we are doing something good for others and the environment by recycling and reusing all kinds of items.
I have sold clothing in the past and I have a garbage bag full of good used clothes that I am planning on taking to the thrift store next tuesday night when it's open. Their profits go to charity so it's a good feeling to be able to participate.

Hey cyberflulf. I guess e-commerce would be the way to go. Personally, if i needed the cash, i would put up an antique on ebay and place a bid for it. You never know how much these things can fetch. Other than that... if you are a good writer... ebooks would get you some cash. Maybe an old painting or clock... you never know. If i do get desperate.. they would have to go.

Antiques can surely make a good income if you have any lying around .
E-commerce is one of the easiest ways to make an income nowadays I guess, or at least one of the fastest ways. Signing up with sites takes minutes. Ebooks sound good aswell, and perhaps other copyrighter stuff aswell. But your spelling needs to be flawless and you need to have a big imagination aswell. Thanks for responding!

I guess books are allways a good thing to sell. There are allways people that are interested in buying books and especially college books seem to stay wanted for at least a couple of years untill newer ones are releaser. I wonder whether or not the e-books will change that.

That wasn't really what I was going for in this discussion, as I think this is something you do for a living and not because you are in need of extra money. Also, it was basicly hypothetical rather than that I am looking into ways to make extra money. Please also consider that if the link you posted is a referral link you are not abiding to the mylot rules. Thanks for your response and the best wishes for the new year!

I would sell things that I am not using anymore. I am not the type of person that likes to collect things, but I always have been a reader and when I no longer want to keep my books, I just sell them online or have a small yard sale. IN the worse case scenario, I would borrow money from my brother. My brother is more richer than me, and he will help me out for sure.
