I was thinking about the same camera and was asking many photographers who got experiences with shooting. I think for you as for a newbie Canon OES 1000D is a good choice. U can buy also many lenses for Canon, that are cheaper comparing to lenses for Nikon for example. So i wish u many great shots with ur new cam :)

I've never tried the Canon 1000D, but my main gripe about the 100-series is that the bodies aren't really sand and dustproof. No problem with normal weather, but I was taking pictures at a show jumping competition and the wind was pretty strong so both me and my camera got caught by the dust storm. Apart from that I was quite happy with the camera the first years, so I think it'll be a great camera to start with.

Is it a Canon Powershot? If so, I love them! And you'll do great with them. It's a good starter camera. I have a website full of photos I've taken with my Canon, you could check it out! It's: http://www.lyssphotography.webs.com . Canon's have a lot of amazing features. Black & white, sepia, different modes, macro, and so on. It's really fun experimenting around with all of the different things you can do with your camera. Enjoy!
