We went to visit my parents today. My Dad is unwell so my Mum came out for lunch with us. She is 85 and not someone to be messed with. The meal was awful. The fish was raw/frozen and we had to wait an hour for it to be served from ordering. We had to complain. The manager was stupid enough to try to "play" come on to my Mum, and said "my room is upstairs". I thought that she was going to murder him. He did discount the bill by 50%, but he's lucky to be alive! Have you ever been apologised to and the person apologising has dug their hole deeper?

Hello, Pikey. What a w*nker - a pity his father wasn't! Years ago, we were in a pub/restaurant on an outing from our social club. We weren't really hungry, but the people next to us ordered burgers, and they looked delicious. They were obviously home made, and they came on a huge, fluffy bun, with a salad and homemade coleslaw, so we decided to order one ourselves. I said to the waiter, 'I want one just like that,' and off he went. About 20 minutes later, he came back with a shrivelled brown disc on a Tesco's value roll with no salad or coleslaw. I called him back. Our neighbours had left half of theirs, but there was still enough on the plate for him to see what they'd had. I pointed at it and said: 'Where's the salad, where's the coleslaw, but more importantly, where's the king size burger?' Off he went again, and came back with the SAME burger on the SAME roll, with a spoonfull of coleslaw and a lettuce leaf added. I really blew my stack then. 'Which part of "I want a burger like that one" do you not understand? Why haven't I got what I ordered?' This was when he really dug himself in deep. He said: 'Well, the chef was on his break, and the new lad in the kitchen hasn't quite got the hang of it yet.' By this time, you could have heard a pin drop, as everyone was awaiting the outcome. I called the manager over, and explained my problem in great detail and at great volume. I got my money back, and I also got a burger just like I wanted - only about twice as big as the first one, which was enormous! It took 4 of us to clear the plate!

You are GREAT! Too often people will put up with bad food and not want to make a scene. I had ordered a burger and fries at McDonald's. The burger and fries were cold. I took them back and did get a hot burger but the fries were the same ones that I gave the idiot. I took the burger and I stood there and sampled the fries, which were still cold. I called the manager over and pointed out that the fries were cold and AWFUL! His attitude was "What do you expect?" I flipped the fries off the end of the counter into the kitchen and loud enough for everyone to hear I told the Jack A$$ that I was going to call the health department and the home office of McDonald's. Funny, I got really fresh hot fries and another burger because I had to wait and also got a coupon for a meal. It happened when I was around 23, but your post brought it back to mind. I don't care much for McDonald's burgers, but I love their fries for some stupid reason.

Hello, Toni. Yes, it always pays to make a scene, if reason and rationality don't do the trick. It's particularly irritating when the offender is some 12 year old who shouldn't be out without a carer. Funny about the McDonalds fries. I like them too, and yet I hardly ever eat fries. I think it's because they're so crispy.

oh p1kef1sh we had the same experience too. my wife and i together with her sister who has a date, had a dinner in one of the expensive restaurant in the country. when the food came, we started to enjoy eating while chatting. then suddenly my wife seem to have bitten something and opened her mouth to find out that its a broken glass! she was 5 months pregnant during that time. i really got mad and immediately called the waiter who served us the meal. i told him the issue and i asked for the manager. he replied "yes" but went on serving and even ignore us everytime we call him. when he came back to us, im really mad asking for the manager and even asked us if the broken glass was swallowed? i answered him sarcastically if its a meal for my baby? he even answered lucky for my wife coz she didnt swallowed it and told her that she can continue with her dinner. that made me decide to stand up and leave without paying! huh! i even dare them to call a police!

That's horrific. You did the right thing by leaving. I once had a broken glass in my meal and was given a free hotel night.

What a horrible person!! I would complain to the parent company, that was very insulting. My dad is also unwell, a bad heart with a pacemaker that has one lead not working all the time. He's 87 and can't be anesthetized so when the lead goes, so does he. He usually feels okay. We went out to dinner and his meal came nearly raw instead of medium well (a steak) and the potatoes were cold. The manager gave us his dinner for free and also gave my stepmother and me our coffee free. I'm glad your mother can stick up for herself and hope your father feels better.

Hahaha...I don't know your Mum, but she sounds like a wonderful lady! I wish I'd seen that. The nerve of some people to think they can get away with something like that. It also sounds like you should have had your meal free, between the poorly prepared food and the managers patronism towards your mother. Unless that manager is also the owner, I'd write a letter to the owner. In today's economy, most would want to know if your experience is less than expected. They depend on repeat business, so maybe you'll get a free replacement dinner out of it. A while ago my husband and I when out to a restaurant and had a frustrating experience too. After ordering we waited...and waited...and waited. During this time people who'd come in after us were being served, people who'd been there when we came in were all gone. When we finally got the waitresses attention and asked about our meals, she had the nerve to ask if we were ready for them! We said no, and went elsewhere. I did write and got an apology and a coupon for 2 free dinners.

Good point! Maybe if they had treated you like royalty, after the screw up, not charged you and offered you coupons for a free meal or 2 afterwards...maybe.

That is most unfortunate,Sorry to hear of your ordeal. Most places would have offered the meal free instead of at a 50% discount. I do hope that next time everything will be delightfully delicious. Yes, it has happened a few times.

Yikes. For raw/frozen fish they should have given you the meal for free sez I. And yeah, usually the person apologizes and then continues to do the same thing over and over again. Talk about digging the hole deeper (like about 6 feet under)...

In effect he did give us those meals free. But his attitude was "aren't you lucky" more than "I'm really sorry that you visit is ruined"!

Then your parents are in a very helpless condition.It' very sad. In our country old parents live with their sons. Sons and daughters in law look after them.We can't think our old fathers and mothers will depend on paid manager or servants.It's our social custom that we must look after our parents.

Hi pikey, so you came all the way over here for lunch then did you. Well I have to say the service was quite fast if you only waited an hour and if your mum is female and the host is male of course he's going to chat her up a bit, what else would you expect? But frozen fish is a big no no so you were perfectly right to complain. I frequently send food back if it comes with rigani all over it and I've said no rigani, but most times now I just remember to say it automatically.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

There are ways to flirt and ways to flirt. Making suggestive noises to an already peed off octogenarian female is NOT the way to endear yourself. LOL. What is rigani? Like rigormortis?

I've had the problem with people apologizing and making the situation worse! At that point I usually start chewing and don't stop until they are a perverbally bloody pile on the floor. My neighbor lady is a piece of work. She is 85 years old also, and she doesn't take any crap off of anyone. She will call a spade a shovel and start beating the person who has earned her wrath with that shovel (again perverbally, she isn't strong enough to swing a shovel! LOL). I wouldn't have accepted only a fifty percent discount for inedible food. I would have gotten him by the gonads and insisted that not only not make me pay for the meal, but give me my next meal free. The manager is in the business to feed people and above all serve people food that is edible and safe to eat. His business isn't to do a come on to someones Mother, it's too bad that she didn't grab him by some important family jewels and twist!!! I've been known to have "spasms" of either one of my arms and some idiot decides to proposition me like that ends up suffering from one of my "spasms"! Then I get up and walk out! Since the man is only the manager of the establishment, you need to go to higher ups and complain. I did that with one of the US fast food chains and ended up with a wonderfully free meal. Of course I chose something that I couldn't afford otherwise (It was Taco Bell and I got a steak something or other that was around $9 + for the meal deal). The people who own the business need to know about the incident otherwise they can loose their investment.

I think that this guy is managing his first restaurant. He's very sure of himself and doesn't realise that actually all the diner wants to hear is "sorry we screwed up. "Let me make it better" and not suggest that the diner might like to make out with him! We have informed the company of our disappointment.

Hi P1key, Firstly a Happy New Year to you and the Boss and sory to hear that your father is unwell. Can't actually think of a situation wher someone has dug a deeper hole by trying to apologize but I am pleased to hear that you had your bill reduced by 50%. I always complain when the food or service isn't good which a lot of English people tend not to do eh! Huggles. Ellie :)
