I think my lil guy has an earache. I'm not all that familiar with them as my girls only had them once and that was years ago. But his ear this morning was a lil red and he cupped his ear a bit upset. However, the Dr is not open until tomorrow. I did give him some pain reliever to help. Any other suggestions?

I am not sure if this has already been suggested since I'm replying through e-mail.. but something I always do when any of us get an ear ache is put a small piece of cotton inside the ear. This warms the inner ear, and if the ache is due to a wax blockage, it helps break it down. It's especially good when we go to sleep. I've also read that you can put a drop of olive oil on the cotton ball and that helps as well.. though I've never tried that. If he's in too much pain I'd just take him to the ER. I hate to make my kids deal with severe pain for that long!

I do have some hylands drops but he won't let me put them in his ear. He's only 2. The trip to the ER is $200 up front even w/ insurance, whereas the Dr's office co-pay is $6. He's handling it ok w/ the pain reliver, not fuss'n too much now.

Scratch that co-pay is $7 as of the new year wich is a deal compared to most.

Personally I would treat the pain ONLY until a proper diagnosis is given I only say that because while you can just get ear ache if it is actually an infection filling the ear (that could possibly have a perforated ear drum) with oil could do more harm than good to be honest.
Give some infant parecetemol and cuddles until you can get to the doctor I only say this because a childs ear drum can perforate quickly and if you pour oil into that not only could you cause some serious damage to the childs ear but it would also be incredibally painful for the child also!
My daughter suffers with chronic ear pain every day due to inflmation of her ear drums they think she has glue ear and has been refered to ENT its horrible to see so I totally sympathise but please treat the pain only first until you know for sure the ear drum is still intact xxxxx

I read the pkg of hylands drops & it said not to use until diagnosed by a Dr so I didn't try any further with the drops. And personally if the label says something like that then it should be considered a prescription instead of a homeopathic remidy IMO.
I did just treat the pain til we got in (he was fine as long as he had pain reliver) & it was an ear infection.

I have heard that clove oil is good for it, put a drop inside the ear. I don't know how it works, maybe it lubricates the eardrum so it isn't so tight with inflammation so it won't hurt as badly. I've never tried it but I've known people who swear by it.
There's no Urgent Care center or nurse-in-a-box where you are? Maybe your insurance will cover most of a place like that.

There is BUT the co-pay is rediculous! They closed the childrens urgent care & that co-pay was $100 & Childrens ER is $200 and all up front! He seems to be handling it ok, only complains here and there.

You must be kidding! I went to Urgent Care in May when I suspected my appendix needed to come out and they only charged me $100! I didn't use my insurance for it. That's just unbelievable, highway robbery!
I'm glad he's doing okay, hope it continues to go well!

Exactly! Whereas since I waited to see the Dr on Monday it was $7 for our co-pay & $10 for the antibiotic. And he was handling it fine as long as he had pain reliver & the Dr got him in mid monday morning.

Hi snugglebunnies, no need for a doctor over here with that one. Greek rememdy for earache is heat a teaspoon, not too hot, fill it with olive oil, and get the person to tilt their head to one side and pour the warm olive oil into the ear. Hold for a little bit and use cotton wool to stop the drips. It works.

My mom use to heat oil and pour it into our ears as kids. I would use baby oil if you have it. However they say the oil can be clogging, so I have heard that you should use peroxide. Just remember once you have whatever it is in the ear for about 5 to 10 minutes, to wash it out with warm water. Then if you are a smoker my mom would blow smoke it our ear to help relieve the pain. I know you should not smoke near a child but she would take one puff in, put out the cig and blow the smoke in our ear. Good luck!

I've heard of various oils & drops for the ears but blowing smoke into an ear is a new one to me. Hmm... interesting.
