I was reading where like 80% of the US is overweight and it made me wonder about it. When I’m in the stores or a restaurant and I see an overweight person, I feel bad for them b/c I’m also big and I know how hard it is to lose any weight much less a lot of weight. I’ve often caught ppl snickering, whispering or outright staring at overweight ppl b/c they don’t like them. I’ve even seen one time when a very large guy ordered some food at a fast-food place and the cashier looked him up and down and said “Are you sure you need that? We do have salads”. I would have been mortified if someone said that to me. What do you think when you see a very overweight person? Have you ever made fun of someone b/c of their weight? Do you think that if a person is overweight they are lazy, stupid or just eats all the time? Why do you think we have so many overweight ppl in the US? I have never made fun of someone who is overweight, but I do think those that are severely overweight are lazy. If you are 300lbs overweight and you have no medical condition to explain it, there has to be some laziness involved to create that. I do not have anything against anyone who is fat, that is their decision. Yes, I say it is their decision. That is because, even though losing weight is hard, it can be done. There are tons of healthy food recipes online, along with excersice tips and examples.

I would never make fun of anyone for being overweight but I have seen others do so. Fast food is so convenient here in the US and so many folks are working extra hours that I think some are taking the easy way and just picking up the take out rather than cook at home. And if you are 300 pounds, then you do have medical conditions as a result of it, the human body can't handle that strain. So likely they have bad backs, knees etc. So that maybe be why some find it hard to start the exercising needed to drop the weight. BUT they sure could cut some calories! Also many folks are emotional eaters and that can lead to rapid weight gain, a girl friend of mine gained over 40 pounds in about 9 months after a bad bad break up. She used food as comfort instead of facing the issues for awhile anyway. She did wake up and get healthier but it took alot longer to get the weight off than it took to put it on. Junk food is everywhere and I think that's part of why so many Americans are heavier than they should be. I don't think it's as high as 80% of Americans but it is much much higher than it should be. One has to change one's lifestyle, eat healty and get some exercise, no magic answer just daily commitment and changes will come.

Hi Twoey. It makes me angry when people make fun of another person for whatever reason. Often times I come to that persons defense when I encounter someone taking jabs at them. What makes them so perfect? They in fact are not. If it were me that was told about the salads that are available I would have spoken to the manager. There is no need for such behavior. I know many people who are overweight and exercise more than a thin person does. I am not one to ponder the reasons for why there are so many people who are overweight by our outdated standards.

Exactly! I would of asked to speak to the manager. There's no reason to say such a thing to anyone.

I'll fourth that answer. Yes...speak to the manager! She is in customer service and it is not her place to question the customers purchase. He could have been buying it for someone else!! Even if he wasn't...not her place to question. don't judge!

If it were me I would also ask for the manager. There is no way that I would let other people do that to me. That was really rude and uncalled for. The guy may be overweight, but he is a customer and customers should be valued. After all, they bring money to the business.

It not right to make fun with with overweight people nor with any person for that matter. Being overweight is something that we should control knowing that it is certainly a risk factor of heart disease as well as hypertension. Most likely the food that we eat and the lifestyle will affect our weight. So it's really important to monitor what we are eating as well as do some exercise from time to time.

hi twoey yes most of our American people are overweight because we eat a diet with too too much fats in it, and as a result we all gain weight. a lot of people refuse to cut down on fat, sugar and salt . the result is overweight. also most of us do not get enough exercise. I do not make fun of anyone who is overweight. I am also overweight and a diabetic. with me its a vicious circle as I am heavy because I need to exercise, and its hard to exercise because I am heavy. It is not up to any of us to judge other fat p eople as we do not know their story, judge not lest you be judged. I am trying again to lose weight and its hard because I do spend too much time sitting here mylotting. I must get that forty five minutes of exercise daily that my doctor recommends in order to lose that weight. I know I am not lazy,or stupid nor do I eat all the time. my mentabolism is too slow and I need to cut down a bit and exercise a lot to keep my blood glucose level. I as an overweight myself would never make fun of fellow fat people,. its not funny being this way and most of us are under doctors care and are trying to lose weight.

Hi Hatley, great points! I was underweight my whole life and trust me, there is a lot of judgementalism for that as well. I got the ironing board, twiggy jokes...you name it. The overweight people just hated me. The beautiful bodied people labled me anorexic even tho I ate like you would not believe. I hated my turn sideways and look like a zipper body. With my dad's encouragement, I did learn to accept my body as it was but to be honest..it was a lame acceptance. I was 25 and still looked 15!! Then I gained weight and had to do a complete about-face. It isn't all laziness or that we don't care. There are so so many reasons for being overweight or underweight. It's just wrong to judge others for such superficial reasons.

hii yeah even i came to know that majority of the ppl in the us are overweight i do make fun of my friends who are a bit fat but i really make sure that they dont get hurt because of my commnts.. i think the reason of obesity among the us citizens is because of them palying more of video games in their childhood this is the root cause of their obesity. children should be encouraged to play more of outdoor games rather than allowing to sit them on computers.. as obesity is also heridatory ppl should also think of their future generations.. anyways i feel ppl nowadays are realising the importance of health issues and are ready to cahnge their lifestyle..hope they do it fast have a nice day

Hi, I have come across many people who are overweight(I m actually thin only). But that doesnt make any difference to me.My close friends are overweight. Its the craziest thing on earth to tease people who are overweight.I dont know why people make fun of them and what bothers them if others are overweight. Honestly speaking, when i find guys i commenting on my friends who are overweight, i scold them. Its actually none of their business to comment on others physique.I have many friends who are overweight. But these people are the ones who excel at their studies, their jobs and many other things.

I think it's wrong to make fun of someone because of their appearance whether it's about their weight or whatever, so I don't do it. As for what I think when I see someone who is overweight, I guess it depends on how overweight they are. If we're talking about someone who is maybe 30 or 40 pounds overweight I think they probably just eat too much (or too much of the wrong things) and don't exercise enough. I can relate to that - I'm the same myself! What I don't understand is the people who are really, really overweight. So big that they can hardly walk or whatever. How does it get to that stage - surely they reach a point long before then when they realise they need to do something about their weight? I've spent most of my adult life struggling with my own weight so I know it's not easy, but ultimately we make our own choices I guess. And I know for some people there are medical reasons for weight gain, but for the majority it's just a simple case of eating too much and not exercising enough. As to why the US has so many overweight people I would guess it's probably just due to over-consumption. I'm from the UK (where we also have a growing problem with obesity) and I haven't been to the States personally, but everyone I know who has been there comments on the same things - how cheap food is in comparison with here, and how big the standard portion sizes are.

I would never make fun of overweight people. People become overweight if they eat more calories than they expend. It is as simple as that. More and more people have a sedentary life style. The car is king in the USA and people drive everywhere. They also like to eat. Man oh man do Americans like to eat! I go to Florida once in while and on the outskirts of a city are the fast foods places. Fast food places of every description and suited to every taste. Fast food places are deadly. Did you ever see the movie about the guy who agreed to have all his meals at McDonalds for one month. That was breakfast, lunch and dinner. He was examined before and after by a doctor. He was really seriously damaged after the month. Processed and pre-cooked frozen foods are also a major culprit. They are full of fat, sugar, saltand preservatives. People have hectic schedules with working, kids and the activities that kids partake in so the easiest thing is to pop a frozen meal into the microwave and voila! fill up on stuff that makes one fat and unhealthy. I know it is hard to loose weight but the weight does come off with excercise and proper food. The healthiest food is found around the perimeter of the supermarket and that is where we should do most of our shopping. Fresh fruit and vegetables, pick them according to the time when they are in season, fresh meats preferably whole meats, not processed sausages and cold cuts. Eggs, low fat dairy products and yoghurts and skim milk. The inner isles and frozen food frezers should be left alone except for beans in cans or dried, lentils, brown rice and canned tomatoes. Slow cookers are a wonderful invention. Inexpensive cuts of meat and vegetables or beans can be set in in the morning before going to work or doing chores and at supper time there is a wonderful home cooked meal. Salt can be substituted by herbs or Mrs. Dash seasonings. Chips, dip, ice cream, store bought cookies and candies should be reserved for a very rare occasional treat or a birthday party for the kids. In answer to your question why are there so many overweight people in the US? in a nutshell food laden with calories and fat Processed food food laden with sugar and salt obsenely large portions in restaurants and fast food places too many calories each day not enough excercise

I admit that I am curious, though it is none of my business, when I see a person in a wheelchair who has the sides of their torso draping over the arms of the chair. No, I don't say anything or look at them anymore than I would any other person, I just wonder what circumstances they went through that caused that condition. And I know they are being talked at by socially retarded people, because I have had a few comments directed at me as well. I used to weigh 255 and I could eat anything I wanted and not gain any weight. Then I decided to try the low-carbohydrate thing and got down to 220. I didn't feel right though, and slowly started adding carbohydrates. I got up to 305 before I started exercising and lowered my consumption. I'm finally down below 275, and hopefully by next year I will be below 255. I very seldom have fast food, but I do go to elegant restaurants on occasion and have quality dishes. A few offer half order plates, which is what I would order, and I avoid places that only sell really big-portioned dishes. If I have soda or fruit juice I ask to have it diluted with water or plain soda to cut down the sweetness. The stuff they sell these days is too syrupy for my taste. And the "lite" and "diet" drinks use those chemicals that make the drink sweeter than that high fructose corn syrup, and is especially sickening. There was a study that found that drinking diet soda actually causes one to gain weight. Well, not necessarily causes, but it is a consequence. http://www.webmd.com/diet/news/20050613/drink-more-diet-soda-gain-more-weight I read a book some time ago, The Diet Myth Why America's Obsession with Wight is Hazardous to your Health. It's argument is that the tables of recommended weights kept being lowered, and that the health problems of the lower weight are greater than being overweight according to the new tables.

A lot of people eat because of emotions. That's one thing you have to learn not to do. Second, as someone said, there are so many programs that can help. Overeaters Anonymous, Weight Watchers, etc. I am against people making fun of each other. I don't think they are better than anyone else. There are a lot of fat people around, and some people, just as you said twoeye, that will make fun of them. Fat people can be lazy, of course. However fat people can be active, too. You just have to watch what you eat. There are a lot of programs that are good to lower weight. I thank you for bring this matter up. I don't think it's in USA only, there are other places, too, with fat people.

I don't really think anything when I see a heavyset person, because we all are what we are, and we should not judge each other. life is just to short. We all can't be beautiful and perfect people. God made who we are.

I have seen many make fun of skinny, obese, any weight person. I myself don't. I have a mother in law who is very obese and don't do anything but sit at home and read romance novels all day long. I feel she could do alittle exercise even just sitting but she dont. She was in a very bad car accident and was bedridden for almost a year and that didn't help her out either. So, now her legs are still bad but I would like her to do some of the steppers or something while she sits to atleast get her heart rate and blood pumping. I used to be a decent size, got pregnant, had issues, stress,my medications made me gain weight (i stopped taking) etc. and gained over 80 lbs. I do not like how I look now but it is hard to go to a gym, but I do housework, go to school, watch what I eat and still gain. I have talked to my doctor about surgery to no avail and Medicaid won't pay for it. its not like I am not trying!! Some people have harder time losing weight and I am sure there are many reasons why people can't lose weight. Yes, there are some who are lazy but others try. Its just plain out mean to talk like that to anyone without knowing if there is medical, health, family reasons behind it.

I often said that it's our culture and how we teach our children. Mothers that take their kids to McDonalds on a weekday are teaching their children that eating unhealthy food is a normal everyday thing. Mothers that force their kids to eat brocoli and stuff like that teach their kids that food is not all about enjoyment but rather getting proper nutrients to survive. We are overfed in America but a lot of things attribute to that. We are a wealthy nation where even our poor are overfed. You will see people living in poverty in US but are larger than people with a steady income. This is because food that is unhealthy is cheaper than healthy food. We also choose food based on taste instead of it nutritional value. Chocolate or an apple? You know what you would choose 9 times out of 10. Americans are pleasure junkies. They're bored with life and everything needs to be about pleasure. We truly don't make choices based on anything else. Another point I want to make. Our grownups are basically still children. They eat, dress, and act like children. How can they teach their children how to eat proper food? They act like the kids themselves by putting nothing but snacks in their grocery carts!

I am another one of the people in the United States that is to be considered an overweight person. Frequently when I see people that are bigger than I am I really feel sorry for them. I can't ever be sure, but I always imagine that there is some kind of psychological issue that led them to be the way that they are. The reason that I make that kind of guess is because I know that it was the main reason that has lead me to be overweight. Now, it is going to be the main driving force behind my dropping a lot of weight. I'm almost thirty years old and just this week I lost a friend because she didn't take care of herself, so I see that I need to take care of myself so I don't have the same ultimate outcome.

Overweight people need to eat more than others, because most of the time they eat low quality food, so they have to eat more to get any nutrition. At some point overweight people need hepl, not to make fun of them. With excess body weight is difficult to move, so those people may look like lazy, but they are not.

Hi twoey68, Yes, I do think that some overeat or don't exersize enough and maybe that is how it has been their entire life. It could be because they were raised to eat fast food and junk food and with the kids being allowed to sit on the computer or playing video games too much...yes..that would lead to overweight kids and then over-weight adults. Is that everyone's story? No! Many are overweight due to meds they are on or thyroid problems or any number of other reasons. It doesn't matter so much the reason. the fact is that once you get overweight, it is extremely hard to lose it and keep it off. I know. I was always very underweight. I spent my life trying very hard to gain weight which is just as hard and just as unsightly as being overweight. I was in my late 40's when I was put on some meds that caused me to gain weight and gain a lot of it. In a few short months, I found myself overweight for the first time in my life! I had to go from doing all I could to keep weight on to trying to lose weight...something I had no clue about. It was really hard! I don't think or assume anything when I see an overweight person. They know they are overweight and it is their business how they deal with it. It is nothing to look down upon or make fun of. We all have our own obsticles to deal with and we need to focus on our own and not someone else's . By the way, I read Valerie Bertinelli's book on this subject. It is an excellent read! She has battled weight gain off and on for years.

If the population is mainly overweight, then people will take them as granted. They will probably whisper about those who are not overweight. The businesspeople are very practical. They are more likely to carry items that majority can use. If the overweight problem gets worse, those who are slim will find it hard to buy clothing soon.

Well, I don't think that your weight and your intelligence are related, but it's true that most of overweight people are like that not because of any health issue, but because they are too lazy and eat too much -based on many people I personally know-. I don't find overweight people attractive, but that's only my liking and they have the right to choose keeping their weight or losing, as you're the only one who has the right to choose over your body. The bad point is that being overweight implies a big health risk, so I wouldn't encourage that.

when I see overweight people.. I feel sad, because some people make fun of them. Sometimes overweight people suffer inferiority complex most specially for those overweight since childhood.. I feel sad for them... But I know a lot of people that although they are overweight, they are also overweight in talents.. They overcome what people thinks they cannot do. They will prove that being overweight is not a problem but a challenge.
