We dont have auto dishwasher at home. So we always do dishes manually. I like washing dishes and utensils but not all the time. I think about results so that I wont feel tired washing dirty dishes.
How long does it take before you wash dirty dishes? Do you like washing dishes manually?

I don't mind washing dishes at all but am concerned about how clean they really are. I've seen and read about the enormous amount of bacteria that a dish sponge containes and unless you fully rinse what you are washing with that sponge, you can ultimately contaminate whatever it is that you are trying to clean. I have an energy saving dishwasher and fill it to the max before running it so hipefully I am keeping the energy cost down. It also gives me piece of mind that my dishes are clean and sanitized.

I tend to open a new sponge at least weekly so as to avoid
it getting too nasty for dishes. I don't use it to wipe down
the counter or sink either as that makes it even nastier.

I have no dish washer by choice. I like washing dishes. It give me time to rethink the day. Or think of what I have to buy when I go shopping. Or if one of my kids are helping me it give us a chance to talk just by ourselves. I have found that when my hands get chapped I put on a lot of vaseline then a pair of small rubber gloves then put my large dish washing gloves on. The heat from the hot water opens the pores and helps the vaseline smooth out my hands. Try is some time. It works.

I like the ease of a dishwasher more then I do of washing dishes by hand. With a dishwasher we can wait to do the dishes, and many dish washers have energy saving capabilities so we're not wasting so much water or electricity.

We have a dishwasher, but I only use it when we have company. I don't want to waste electric or water. I don't mind washing dishes, but I hate drying them. My husband doesn't mind whether he washes or dries, but he doesn't like to see dishes left on the drainer. So the usual routine is, I wash and he dries, which suits both of us.

Hi Maria,
I have to admit I do like washing dishes manually. For me I think part of the reason is that I am not sure I would trust the dishwasher to do a good job. I trust that they are good labour saving devices, but I can imagine constantly checking things to make sure they are up to my high standard! That and I do like the really warm water on cold winter nights. It is nice to be able to plunge my hands into it and just lose myself in the task for a few minutes and watch the snow or fireworks lol.
Late at night though when I am tired I do like the idea of a dish washer, or after big meals when the washing up seems endless!
All the best,
Dranz

I think you're the only person I read that has dishwasher but still prefer to wash dishes manually. Can you send me your dishwasher instead? LOL. I'm kidding. Have a nice day!

I have a dishwasher but I actually prefer to wash dishes by hand. I don't know why, but there's something really soothing about washing dishes by hand :-)

I prefer to wash mine this way as well. They just seem so much cleaner as when they come out from the dishwasher they have food stuck to them.

I agree if I have to rinse them before using the dishwasher I may as well just wash them by hand. I really think they are cleaner this way.

I usually wash dishes by hand because it's just my husband and me and we don't generate enough items to rate running a dishwasher most of the time. I find this chore to be pretty dull and boring but I do like being able to ensure that everything is cleaned to my satisfaction.

Once upon a time I used to really hate this! I used to leave dishes unwashed overnight and it wasn't very hygienic! However, I came up with a new technique! Before cooking a meal I would fill the washing up bowl with boiling hot water and then I would proceed to cook my meal! Afterwards I would do the washing up right away, the water would have cooled down enough so that my hands would not be scolded! I don't mind washing up now as a result of using this new method! I would much rather have a dish washer but they are far too expensive. I love gadgets and you would think that a dish washer would be one of the first things I pick up! Andrew

Hi Maria,
Yes we do our dishes manually. we don't have the luxury of an auto dishwasher and dryer. i love washing the dishes and make sure that it's not greasy. i even have a style in washing the dishes. i started washing the glasses to avoid grease from getting in to the glass. after the glasses, spoon and forks and the last batch are the plates, bowls, saucers and casseroles. 15 minutes is long enough to finish all the family's dishes!

that's good. we are organized in our own simple way-- even with the simple dish washing we managed to make a good strategy to make sure that our dishes are all clean and grease-free!

Dishwasher is not common here in our country so we wash our dishes manually. My father insists that we wash it as soon as we are done. He likes to keep the kitchen clean. I'm fine with plates and utensils but with pots and pans, not so much. I hate the grease and it's not like I wear gloves in washing them. We tried before but we can't feel if it's squeaky clean with gloved hand. Oh and I hate washing other's dishes. As long as it's mine, my parents and my husband's and daughter's. But from anyone else, I hate it. I'm not their slave and they should have the responsibility of washing their own dishes as soon as they are done with it.

I hate washing dishes by hand. I love the ease and convenience of the dish washer. If I have to wash dishes by hand they usually pile up and when I get tired of looking at them I will finally do the job.

I don't mind it once in awhile, but this is a chore that I try to put off quite a bit. In fact, i should go and do the breakfast dishes right now.

I have dishwasher and have not used it in years. I do not like to save enough dirty dishes to make it worthwhile using the dishwasher. I like washing the dishes by hand as soon as they have been used.

We also do not have an auto dishwasher at home. I don't have a problem about washing the dishes as long as it's not cold! cold water!!
I like washing dishes especially after a very big meal! Washing dishes? Depends... if it's just my husband and I around 20 minutes. If it's a big dinner, around 30 minutes (including pots and pans).

The dishwasher at my home is becoming a storage for all my dishes, I only used it once since is from the previous owner as a bonus. It takes so long and used a lot of water to finish the job, which is really unnecessary for me.
I enjoy doing the dishes the old way, and I find it pretty efficient, you can save a lot of water and energy by doing it manually.
I also rarely use the chemicals to clean the dishes, therefore you don't have to worry about getting chemcial burns to your hands. Hot water is all you need to get rid of the grease, with some hard brushing and some more wiping with the cloth, it should get the job done pretty quick.
Overall is really efficient to do it by hand if you have a few dishes. If you have a huge party and you don't have the time then maybe the dishwasher is your best choice. Still hand washing saves more water, as well as energy compare to the machine, I'd like it to stay that way for my dishes.
