Admin for a Day: Everything Else
@GoAskAlice (5829)
January 3, 2010 1:26pm CST
I’ve started 8 discussions on some pretty specific topics so I wanted to make sure I give everyone the opportunity to bring up concerns about anything else that didn’t fit into the other discussions. Are there other features you’d like to see added to myLot? Is there any other topic that I haven’t asked you about or you haven’t already told me about that you’d like to see added or changed?
Before you respond to this discussion please take the time to look through my other discussions. Your fellow myLotters have invested tons of time in my other discussions and I’m sure there’s a lot of stuff you won’t want to miss. Also, topics that have already been covered elsewhere will just end up cluttering this discussion. The cleaner the discussion, the faster I can respond!
This will be our final wish list for this series of discussions. I may disappear for a couple of days after this discussion but it’s only because I’ll be spending a lot time with our developers and programmers. I have so much to tell them!
I am looking forward to all of your feedback! This has been so much fun!!

Are there other features you’d like to see added to myLot?
YES!
- MyLot has grown. There are users here from all over the world and 24 hours a day. There is a need for someone available 24 hours a day to deal with problems that arise at any time. Problems such as trolls, harassment and abuse.
- More communication between myLot and the Lotters. I have read that you will be responding on other discussions later and that might be enough - but then again it might not.
Is there any other topic that I haven’t asked you about or you haven’t already told me about that you’d like to see added or changed?
- The DRS sytem need deleting or altering and there are questions that need clarifying regarding it. There has not been a place to do this on the other discussions. MyLot made csome changes a few months back but msany are not aware of them as there was no communication.
- Clarification with regards to 'secret mods' on the discussions. This needs to be dealt with by myLot as it spoils the fun for several here when nothing 'official' is ever mentioned though the topic arises often in tthe discussions.

Seconded, Diana, with knobs on! The trolls come out and play at weekends, because they know there's nobody here to stop them. Now, we all know we should ignore them, and that sticks and stones can break our bones but names can never hurt us, but it doesn't work like that in the real world. Here on MyLot, we've lost respected and loved members because of a particularly vicious troll's weekend activity.
And she won't say it herself, but I will. Mysdianait has been subjected to the most obscene and vitriolic attack I have ever seen anywhere, and, you guessed it, it happened at the weekend. She maintained a dignified silence - God knows how, but she did, and fair play to her for that - but it must have hurt, and it was all totally unfounded. Those of us in the know didn't believe a word of it, but what of the new members? If I had joined MyLot that weekend, I would have very quickly un-joined. This sort of thing does nothing to help the reputation of the site. I think it's the best social networking site on the internet, but I've been here for 9 months. Do you really want new members to think it's a trolls playground? No, I didn't think so.

mysdianait, I've noted all of your concerns and wishes.
To all of you: I can see that this has become quite personal. myLot is moderated and managed by the entire community through the report system. Who the actual moderators are is kept secret for many reasons. However, mysdianait, per your request: mysdianait is not a moderator.
We do have staff available on the weekends to handle problems such as those you've mentioned above. Hopefully my participation yesterday and today, last weekend, and on Christmas will serve as proof of this.

Hi thea09!
We've covered the negative button excessively. :)
It is NOT detrimental to your rating to report abuse.

The thing is, how do you know for a fact that users are abusing the negative button? I know, I know, I'm playing devil's advocate, but I just thought this should be brought up. You don't know what's in a user's mind when they rate a discussion in a negative manner.

1. I refereed someone today and she said that she register -she is not on my referral list...
-possible solution: wouldn't be better to reward members for hard work and REQUIRE new user to have referral source?
2. I wanted to search for one user and I was not able to.
-possible solution: member search by name or user name
3. I would like to know who is online.
if possible
4. it was an option long time ago to see all members-I can not find that option again
5. vacation option-so people know someone is not active for while.
6. an option to block an user, so that person will not respond to my discussions or my comments
note: the first two points are very important and very helpful for all members.

Hi pola. So long as we know the persons username we can search for them on here. Just insert their username at the end of this link in any web browser: http://www.mylot.com/
I have to say I don't agree with the search by name thing. Some users may want their identity kept hidden and if there is a way to search for them by their real name they may not feel comfortable posting here. Same thing goes for showing who's online, unless users would have a way to turn if off as they may not want to show their online status to others.
As for blocking certain users from responding to discussions/comments, everyone has a right to voice their opinion on the matter. It sucks sometimes, but that is the way it goes. Don't forget there is always the report abuse button if we ever need it...
Happy mylotting!

Hi again Alice. I hate to say it, but I don't have the time to look over the other discussions, or rather the responses on there. With so many responses and having too little time to go over them, not to mention being on dial-up, I have to pass them up so I can get in what I wanted to say. So, I apologize in advance if I repeat anything that's already been said.
I want to point out to you that the guidelines need to be updated. Particularly the part about not sharing Paypal accounts. Because as you probably already know it has been allowed for some time now. Keeping it the way it currently is may confuse some members, especially new members, and if it is updated it can clear up any confusion that some people may have.
At the risk of getting myself in trouble I think a few of the guidelines need to be dropped or modified such as "make sure you search for existing topics before starting new discussions", " don't post similar or identical postings", and "don't respond to a discussion until you've read all of the responses." Searching for existing discussions does not always work, especially if it is months or years old. Sure, it might help from repeating a discussion that has already been done, but with limited tagging and so many members on here there are bound to be repeated discussions no matter how careful members are before starting new discussions. So long as the discussions aren't plagiarized, I don't see what the problem is. After all, discussing things is part of mylot and has made the site what it is today. As for the last guideline I mentioned, that one has got to go. I for one like to respond with my own thoughts. If I take the time to look over everyone elses responses and comments first I may lose my train of thought as to what I wanted to say which in turn discourages me from wanting to respond at all. And even if I have it all typed out ready to go I may still decide not to respond after going through the responses as something that was said may stop me from treading onto the discussion. And as I mentioned above I don't always have the time to go over the responses anyway. As much as I love mylot, I don't want to be discouraged from posting because of this guideline. Okay, so it hasn't stopped me from posting LOL, but it might discourage others from doing so.
Thanks for taking the time to listen.

While I agree that the Guidelines need revising and I can understand Sacmom's concerns, I disagree that these particular points are outmoded/outdated/invalid.
Yes, the Search facility has problems (but that is also, I believe, something that Alice has on her list). We still do not need a hundred discussions on why and how one believes in God or whether a particular national or international action is justified. Fascinating and meaty though these topics are, it is possible to respond meaningfully to a discussion that was created even four years ago and thus bring it to the fore again.
It must be agreed that reading all the responses is good practice. We don't always do it, I know (I haven't yet read all the responses in this discussion before commenting here), but it remains good practice.
The Guidelines are exactly what they say: Guidelines. A Guideline is NOT a rule. The 'Thou shalt not's are, in the same spirit, only examples of what should be avoided - there are a number of things which aren't specifically mentioned which, nevertheless, are not conducive to good discussion. Very few people would say that the Ten Commandments are the be all and end all of common morality: they are Guidelines and what we generally consider right or wrong in our daily lives is much more decided by a 'cloud' perception of values than by specific rules.

Hi Alice. I agree completely that there is a difference. However, with such a guideline stating "don't post similar or identical postings", it comes off sounding like members are never allowed to do this no matter what. As that is not the case maybe it can be reworded so that it doesn't come off sounding that way? Because when it isn't followed to a "T" it can cause problems between members sometimes. Just an observation I've made through the years of being on here.
Oh, and there's no harm in someone commenting to a response and then continuing on with their thoughts from there. But I for one can't mylot that way. I'm much more comfortable doing it my way. LOL It doesn't mean that I don't comment to what others have said in the discussion, because I've done that too. However, I do it after I've made my response. And even though some of the old members like myself may ignore the "don't respond to a discussion until you've read all of the responses" guideline it may be a bit overwhelming for new members. At least for the ones that have taken the time to read the guidelines anyway. LOL I could be way off base, but it might cause some members to lose interest in this site with having a guideline such as this one.
Thanks again for taking the time to listen. I really appreciate it!

Hi again sacmom!
Good point about the PayPal information. I've added that to the list.
I do appreciate you sharing your opinion on the other two items. I'm not sure I agree with you completely, so let's discuss.
I think there's a big difference between two discussions about topic x started with three years in between them and five discussions on topic y in the same interest category all within an hour. I might be exaggerating a bit, but do you agree that there's a difference?
When responding to a discussion to which others have already responded, what's the harm in saying "I agree with the person above" and then continuing with your thought? To me that's just good form. You acknowledge that someone else has already said much of what you planned on saying and that you agree with what the person has said. I think you also acknowledge that you aren't the only person participating in the discussion - which is part of what makes it a discussion. Like you said, it doesn't stop you from posting. Another point: when you do agree with someone and you let them know, don't you think the support is encouraging?
owlwings, would you agree that it give people great pleasure to see one of their older discussions revived?

Hi Alice, what I was concerned about was, there are some discussions that are on here that have been inactive on here for a year or more, and I as wondering if it was necessary to carry or hold them that long?
I also noticed that there are members on here that have not been active for a year or longer also!
Other than that I enjoy the myLot discussions, and I have enjoyed being on here the last 3 yrs, and I think ya'll are doing a good job, considering the multitude of discussions on here!

It is easy for a discussion to become inactive as they disappear from the top of the list almost immediately. If people do not respond to it for a day it can disappear into history. I find it quite interesting when I get a post from someone a year after I wrote a discussion. It is nice to see it revived.
As for inactive users, well I am sort of on that list as I do not visit mylot every day any more. I think it is a temporary thing as I am just taking a break. I still pop in here every now and then and would hate to be deleted just because I wanted a break.

musicman....I still go back & respond to old discussions...I mean 2 years or older. I've found some GREAT discussions that way. One member even thanked me for revitalizing his discussion as once I responded several others responded & it opened his discussion back up for a couple of days. It also gives some new perspectives when somebody new finds an old discussion. I had that happen to one of my older discussions. A new member had managed to find it & gave a response that flew in the face of ANY response I had had previously!!! That's one of the things I love about myLot...NOBODY is forced to do what the person next to them is doing. You don't want to respond to old discussion, but I do. You don't HAVE to, but I still CAN!!!

Hi musicman6!
What's the concern with inactive discussions? It only takes one response or comment to make them active again.
I also don't understand the concern with members who haven't been active in a while. I hope they all come back though!

alice please think about doing away completely with the negative button as some on here use it to take any one with a ten down to what they evidently think they deserve, usually a five, and the persons never deserved it.they had good discussions were good mylotters, so its just not fair. also I think that people who try to make anywhere from ten to as many as thirty discussions in just a few hours thus clogging up pages and pages with one person's discussions should have to slow it down a bit. most of the last ones had hardly any sense at all to them. they were actually hard to respond to as there was no real substance. I know a lot want to make money fast but is not quality a bit better than quantity?

I'm not sure if this has been brought up but I haven't seen it so here it goes. There are some members who like to reply to every response, some that only respond when it's needed and some who never respond. I do it only when I feel it needs it. However, it seems that some ppl think if you don't reply to them it means you haven't read their response...is there some way to mark it read? According to TOS, you're not supposed to just comment with "Thank you for responding" and yet this seems to be what some members want. It actually makes some ppl, like myself, not want to start discussions.
I think that's the only thing I didn't see addressed. I wanted to thank you for hearing me out over the last few days and for taking time to work on making MyLot an even better place then it already is.

I don't know if this has been added to the discussion as I have tried to read all the comments before hand but, whew! It's 6 pages long!:) Anyway, I am wondering if there is any way that the comment of a poster that violated the mylot discussion guidelines be deleted instead of the whole discussion. I could never understand penalizing all those who follow the rules. It's like throwing out the baby with the bathwater!

It's a little thing, but little things can drive one crazy. After every reply we are asked for tags, then if we want to add that interest. If I wanted to add that interest I would already have done it!
How about adding a "add tags" and "add interest" button to the reply box? Those two functions add about 30 seconds onto the time it takes me to post a reply. Those of us who work on the internet know that time is money and while I love participating here and really enjoy it, the wasted time on those two options is quite expensive to me when you add it all up.
In other words, can you find a way to streamline the process and eliminate extra steps?

Emvy, I do skip it but the time it takes to get to that screen then hit "skip" and get to the "add this interest" screen or make sure the reply posts takes anywhere from 30 seconds to even more. I have high speed internet, too. It's just too time consuming and there are many times I don't reply to a friend's discussion because it's just borderline interesting to me and I don't want to go through all those screens that load so slowly.

It may even be possible for keywords to populate automatically in the tags field depending on keyword density. This could be an option for those who are in a rush. However, there is an option at present to skip it though, if you are really in a hurry.

I too have poor eyesight, but I use a screan reader to read the text so I can leave the font where it is. Also if you want to incress the size of the font for your entire computer, there are magnification softwares avaible for those who can still see, but can't see normal font. Adjusting your screan resalotion should help with over all size as well.
Thease are things I've had to do.

I think persons who come pretty close to payout like within fifty cents should be given a special opportunity to get to the ten dollar payout.
Next I think it would be good to be able to send messages to persons who are not friends.
Finally and perhaps even most important I think that there should be a spell check within the body of the discussion area .That way you will know your errors off hand before posting

Good evening Alice, I know a few things have been mentioned but as I went through them I didn't see a suggestion for this but I was wondering if there was a way that we could make an edit button for our posts while I know that a delete button wouldn't be possible because of the way the earnings go but would it be possible to somehow add an edit button for maybe even the first few hours after you post a discussion just for spelling or grammar errors....
Also I just started a discussion about this a few days ago and I saw another member mention about the interests..I think it would be nice if we could fix the search button to where we could type in a topic or interest title and be taken straight to discussions about that topic or interest but also have the button to start a new discussion once you are there because I see how to get to those topics that have been started on the subject but see no way to start a discussion unless i scroll through my interest tabs. Thanks and have a great evening.

We have a "preview" button that gives us a chance to proof BEFORE we actually post. While in "Preview", there is an "Edit" button so we can go back & make corrections. That way we can proof & edit BEFORE finally hitting the "Post" button.

Hi GoAskAlice, since this is the last opportunity for us to contribute our suggestion, I would like to give a couple of my views here concerning the payment history page. It would be more useful and easier to be referred if the date of the myLot payments is listed with its serial number for each payment. It would be great if the total accumulated amount is stated at the bottom, so that we don’t have to take the trouble to total the amount we have earned here so far every now and then when needed.
This improvement would facilitate us to show to friends who are interested in myLot site and would like to join us as members. This would definitely help us when we try to invite friends to join myLot, as they are always interested to know how many payments we have got as well as the total earned here so far.
Take care and happy posting

Hi GoAskAlice, thanks a lot for your kind concern on this matter
I mean I wish to see all the payments displayed in the “”myLot payment history” are shown with sequent numbers like 20, 19, 18, ... in front of every line or item of them, like what we can see below
18. Friday, Nov 13, 2009 $xx.xx
17. Monday, Sep 14, 2009 $xx.xx
16.
15.
and so on... It would better if there are arranged in ascending order instead of descending order.
Yeah you are right. How nice if we can see the total amount we have received since the beginning of our time with mylot until now
Happy posting

Third query: I wish I could give Best Response marks to replies--not just the initial post by someone. Why can't it be set up so as to do that? It happens often that someone's reply to a reply is the only post they make, so I can't give them a Best Response at all even if it's the best! Instead Imust choose among inferior posts! Not fair to the person I was forced to skip over!

Oops...I must not have been very clear. I realize it's confusing, but allow me to try again.
You post a discussion, which gets a reply. That's the leading reply. Then another person posts to that person's reply. His or her reply is marvelous, & after all the replies are in, it still qualifies as a best reply--but you cannot award the BR to the poster's brilliant reply TO a lead reply. Does that help?
What I'm trying to say is, when a poster enters under someone's reply to my discussion, or another reply even under that person (already a reply to someone else in my discussion), the final person's post may be THE best response in the world, but I can't give that person the BR, because the name at the top of the box is someone else's! It would only go to the top person to whom he or she was responding, & that's not fair! I'm forced to either choose someone who is a first responder, even if that leading person's response to me was absolute gibberish, or just not give anyone a BR! How sad is that??
What is the point of awarding a BR if it can't be given for the exact letter one finds best? Isn't the whole BR thing about encouraging good posts? Can this be fixed?
Thanks for responding!
Maggiepie
HAVE A SAFE & HAPPY (& a somewhat warmer!) 2010!

Maybe I was the one who wasn't very clear.
The initial reply is known as a response. Any reply to that is known as a comment. In other words, if there is a number preceding the contribution it's a response and anything else is a comment. That's why it's called best RESPONSE and why I suggested "best contribution". Aren't semantics fun? :)

im sorry i just havent had time to read through absolutely everything in your discussions. i dont know how you do it but guess your a speedy typer. not me, im pick find type. anyway, can i ask why there are only certain amounts you can choose for payout? i mean i can understand the lowest being 10 bucks, but why does it jump to 25? id like it at around 15. i mean to me 10 is to little to take out but then its really hard to get to 25 bucks. do i make any sense? sorry if i dont. thanks.

I don't know if Alice will understand you, but I did...I think. LOL In other words you want to see different payout amount options? Not just the usual $10, $25, $50, and $100 amounts?
One thing you can do is reset it back to the minimum payout once you've reached your desired amount. It's a bit of a hassle, but it does work.

exactly. i dont know why but i can never put things in as good of words as most can. i guess i could try that. last time i had it set up to 25, it took forever and i got discouraged not to mention worrying something would happen to keep me from getting it but then i've put it back to ten. but it seems such a small amount. oh well. thanks

Hiya Alice...
I think I've responded with ALL my complaints in your other discussions. Since you're looking for any other, might I suggest a "How To" or Tutorial section for new members or even the old members who can't figure out how to do what they want to do. For new members the biggest question asked is "What does the numbers beside my name mean?" & "What is that star that just showed up in front of my name?" Members who have been here for a while get cranky because they feel they have answered that question a thousand times. Well, they probably have, but it's the first time the new member has asked it. As you know from a previous discussion, there are problems with the Discussion Search function so even if the new member does a search, they might not get results. I'd love to see a "How To" on our Profile Page. What works one time may not work the next. I've gone to discussions about how various members finally got something to work. I print it out & follow step by step & NOTHING happens. It was even suggested it depends on the browser being used, so I've tried with BOTH my browsers. Still NO luck. I would also love to see the fancy "Comments From Our Friends" brought back. I enjoyed looking at the creative ways people chose to express themselves!!!

That would work too!!! I didn't come here for the money...I came here for the friends & the opportunity to learn something new!!! For the first week I was here, I was so engrossed in the discussions, I barely had time to look around & see what was available. Once I got past the initial excitement, I finally found time to look around. I met a lot of wonderful people but was shocked at how few were willing to answer questions. Then when I found people who would answer my questions, I got conflicting answers.
ALICE...
Cat led me to another thought. When we have a referral sign up under us, I think they should automatically become a friend so we can send them a WELCOME PM & an offer to assist if needed. I've had 2 referrals. One hit the ground running & didn't need any help. The other joined & disappeared & still has "0" posts after 2 months. I feel that had I been able to say hello & welcome to myLot that things might have been different.

A 'Welcome to myLot' email to new members would be terrific, and very appreciated. I know I would have liked one when I was new. I know that most of the information is available throughout myLot, but to have a 'quick start' version sent would be really helpful.

1. Flyers: Flyers create banners for a particular interest. Not much purpose served if we are looking for referrals. Instead why cant we have banners for our individual referrals. There is a link but no html for this link nor html for a banner for our own referrals.
2. We should be allowed to have reasonable sized gif images for our profile image with background music may be?
3. It would be nice if we knew what we earn for uploading of images and our participation separately.
4. There should be points added when we select the Best Response - kind of incentive as many of us including me fail in this duty.
Thanks for inviting us to give our suggestions.

First things first. Change your ID to 'helping hand' That's what you are. I tried uploading a gif image on my profile just now but it did not. The same image that you see on my page now I converted it to a gif - a psychedelic effect. I even reduced it to a 25% size but still it did not.
And about referrals see what message flyers give. May be my referral will be there but that message restricting it to just one interest I feel is not necessary. I want a banner with my referral and having myLot and not a particular inerest alone.
Thanks for your help 'helping hand'

This image that you see here is the one I just tried after sending you the above comment. This is a small image which animates on my profile but not here. I want to know what is the size that we can upload.

Hello Allice,
Well the only thing I would want changed in mylot is that you change the rules so that you can post a referral link in your discussion or mention in your discussion that the link is in my profile. Now I am not saying being able to spam it everywhere but where you do it in a nice way where you can help myloters to a good website and also to help yourself out. I would really want that rule changed because I think the Mylot community would be happy about that. And if you find spammers that are spamming their referral link every where just ban them from the website.
here is what I am talking about on a spam discussion, comment,or response:
"Hey I just found a great website here is my referral link" or simply just putting your referral link out there. That is the only thing I want changed on Mylot.
Thanks for letting me ask you this question and have a nice day.

The question is...would you think it was a great website if you weren't being paid by it??? I don't mind friends suggesting their own referral. However, if I don't know you, I don't want you leading me to your site. With over 194,000 members, that means there could be the chance of over 194,000 viruses waiting on the other end!!! You can put your referral link on your profile page & then anyone interested can get there from your profile page. I'm sorry but..."sign up under me" is NOT a discussion...it's SPAM!!!

yea I understand that but lets say I found a website that paid me like a $100 in less than a month and I tell what the site is all about and then mention that the link is in my profile if you are interested and then post opinions about that website. I believe that would fall into the make extra money category and would be a very helpful discussion in my opinion.
