I feel distracted with this as our eyes have to go in two places.I would rather concentrate on the movie and try and understand it even if it is in a language that I do not know.

That is one problem, everybody faces, and at times we even miss some good scenes because our attention is diverted to the subtitles.

being in a country where english is second language, every movies in un our theatre has subtitle (unless it is a local movie). sometimes it is difficult to concentrate on the movie while we have to see the subtitle, but I think in general it really helpful for us to look at the subtitle especially if the English used is complicated and not common used in daily conversation. Also, sometimes it's hard to understand what the actor talking if the movie has fast pace dialogue

I have been watching Korean and Taiwanese drama for so long with english subtitles. Sometimes I wasnt able to catch the english words because sometimes its to slow then suddenly it will appear so fast. I'll just rely on the character's gestures, facial expressions and location to understand it well.

even if i know it will help me understand more what the characters are saying, i hate it coz i focus more on reading rather than watching the scenes. and whenever i go back looking on those scenes, i kinda confuse this time on what the characters are saying huh!hyappy mylotting codris

I like to watch movies in many different languages, and I always use the subtitles. If the movie is in English or German I don't really need the subtitles, but I still use them, because there are sometimes a few words that I don't understand, and if it is a great movie I want to understand all of it. When I watch movies from Asia, I really need the subtitles, otherwise I wouldn't understand half of the movie. Some people find subtitles annoying or tiring, but I am used to them, and I don't mind reading them while I am watching a movie. I prefer listening to the original language. Dubbed films have never been popular in my country, we always use subtitles instead, and I am happy about that.

No, whenever we watch movies we always make sure that we take them off they can be annoying at times. The only times we use the subtitles are when they are in different languages but not always because I know that in most of the movies they are already there so subtitles are still not needed. Thanks a bunch for your response codris..

I definitely need to watch movies with subtitles when they are in chinese, japanese, or french language, but if it's in English then I take off the subtitles because sometimes they are too annoying and it makes me dizzy just by looking at them.

Now days I have started using the subtitles in even the English films, it is not that I do understand English, but at times, I miss some of the words because of the different accents which is used by the actors.Since I find American English a little bit difficult to understand, I have started using the subtitles.

I wouldn't mind it. I watch a lot of old silent movies, which are pretty much the same as those with subtitles except all you hear is music and not voices. There are a lot of good movies out there in different languages and subtitles make them understandable--we can appreciate new talent and new thinking and ideas. I don't see any of those in my theaters and not on television, either. I would be interested though.
Tonight I am watching a silent 1926 Russian movie called "Miss Mend" about a conspiracy to attack Russia with biological weapons. It is a very good movie!! The silents are just about the same as sub-titled movies, but without the voices. Have you ever watched a silent movie? They're great!! And nearly every country made them, it is so fascinating to see the silent movies (subtitled) from all those continents and countries!

I can't stand watchinng movies with subtitles. They are in the way of the movie and are a huge distraction to whats going on....That's what translators are made for, to translate the movie so you can enjoy it without getting aggrivated.

I definitely would like to watch foreign movies with subtitles for me to understand more the story and so as to appreciate the essence of its story. But sometimes I find it boring and feel unsatisfied if the subtitle is not correct or the dubbing is different.
