How do you keep your plants alive?

I used to lose a lot of plants. They would live for awhile but then dry out and die. I love to have plants around the house but they kept dieing. A few hearty plants would hold on for a lot longer time. I had a friend whose plants always seemed to be thriving and beautiful! So I asked her what she used. She pretty much said the only thing she did fo rthem was to water them the same day every week. So I chose a day to water them. Now I water my plants every Monday. They seem to do well with this regime. Anyone else have any sure fire simple ways of keeping your plants alive?

I only have house plants right now so I don't spray them with anything. I don't like to use pesticides as a general rule though.

i know that cacti can absorb radiation ,so i kept one in a area which is close my computer, and the most important is that people always say that cacti can survive in desert and it don't need much water,so from the day i kept one it almost about 2-3 months i didn't water it ,i just forget to water it . One day, my colleague said that hey look, what's wrong with your plants ,it ' s DARK.My cacti got dark because of lack water . i want to keep another one, and i will take care of it

I usually water mine when they begin to droop a bit. That way I am certain that they have dried out and the roots aren't rotting from overwatering. With minimum sunlight my plants look a bit haggered in the winter months. I need to get a plant light to give them artificial light to help them through the darker months.

I was intrigued when I found out that artificial light works well for plants! I just water mine every Monday. I water less if they seem real wet and more if they are dry.

Different plants have different regimes, so we can't apply the same technique for them. If you really care about your small garden, you should study the good way to raise each kind of plant ( you can easily find it on the internet , I think). If you don't have enough time, I suggest you to plant cactus which is alway resistant.

That's true. It's always good to see what kind of light and environment the plant prefers!! I only have two plants right now because I have moved a lot lately. THey are both doing pretty well so far!

When I was younger, My little brother and I used to keep plants and we used to water them once a week or testing how dry the dirt was. Although it was a bit of a task to keep plants because we had cats lol. They would try to eat on the leaves or dig out the dirt. Now My grandma keeps plants in her house and she does water them once a week and they are flourishing quite nicely. I think the trick is to make sure the room temperature is consistent and not watering them to often depending on the species of the plant. I think some need more water than others.

You are absolutely correct! I tried sprinkling crushed red pepper on my plants to keep the cats out. It won't hurt the plant as it is a plant itself! But it certainly discourages the cats from digging and chewing!

We have outdoor plants around our house and people here just water them avery afternoon if it doesn't rain. They are all healthy including the orchids. We just make it sure that they get enough sunlight by cutting branches off some trees which should have enough shade for us :D

Outdoor plants and indoor plants are two different worlds indeed! Here, it gets too cold for a lot of outdoor plants. They have to be brought in for the winter. It's still good to make sure the ones that prefer more sun or those that like shadey areas are planted where they will thrive!

well you need to classify them into outdoor and indoor plants. out door plants love a lot of sunshine and they are a fan of water too. other plants don't like to be watered daily. it's just a way of classifying them.

You are correct on that one! Actually, outdoor plants usually need a totally different watering scale than indoor plants. I was speaking of indoor plants! Those I water every Monday without fail!!

you know i was like you for a while. all my plants kept dieing and i got really tired of it. then someone told me they just watered them once a week also and didnt pay much attention to them otherwise. now that did work. i guess you and i both may have watered them to much. i had so many lovely house plants when i had to move and sell my house. i just gave them away because didnt want to worry if they'd make the trip. i was so sad about it i just never got any more

I put them in a room that keeps the same temperature year around and water them like I normally do. I don't have any secrets. Some plants workout for me and some plants die within a week. I usually get plants given to me as a gift. People are always giving me a cactus. Apparently they don't die because even my sister has one.

I enjoy all kinds of plants. I do think keeping them in one place with an even temperature helps! It also helps to read up on the plant's likes and dislikes. Some like light, others prefer shade!

I honestly only own 3 plants. One is a bamboo plant, a cactus, and another small, green plant. They're all so easy to keep alive. I don't think I by any means have a green thumb! lol I think I've just been lucky. Lucky that each of these plants doesn't need watered daily. The cactus and bamboo plant can go for quite some time before needing watered again. The other small, green plant I have sits on my sink, so I just put some water in when the soil is looking dry. Other than water I do have some special green liquid "food" for my bamboo plant that really helps it grow and stay healthy. I guess I don't really have any "tips." I just stick with plants that I know are easy to care for!

our family love plants.. my uncle is still actually a gardener. and our belief is that aside from taking good care of it by water, fertilizer etc. we still talk to them while touching it. my mom use to say that by talking to the plants you will make somehow a connection to them as a living thing. i know its weird and sometimes funny while doing it but actually it works for us. :)

It's not really weird. I think a plant is alive on at least a certain level of existence! I talk to everything living or not anyway!

They don't turn brown staying so wet? I guess though if you have a pot where the water runs out into a pan they won't be too wet to stay alive!

macdingolinger wow what a funny cute user name. go to your library or your book store and get Western Gardens book as it has names and suggestions for how to grow just about anything you could grow, and is full of information for all the different zones in the us. its a fount of information, the thing is with some house plants they take less water than others and some need special plant food like African violets. they will prosper if watered right and given Acid based plant food. get the book you will be glad you did. some plants even in side need more light than others, this book just tells you everything.

I have heard that too! I usually talk to it when I am watering it, just because I talk a lot anyway! But I don't talk to them other times much! Every once in awhile. Maybe I should do it more often and see if it works!

You are absolutely correct, but my plants were given to me and they are inside plants. But your advice still holds true as some need to be placed in lighter areas and some need to be in areas without too much light!
