What is conservatism?

What does it mean to be a conservative? Conservatism simply refers to ideas that advocate longtime customary practices. While some people are often quick to profess being conservative, being a conservative does not necessarily mean being a moralist.
There is a very big difference between religious conservatism and political conservatism. While religious conservatives (most of whom are usually moralists) will make decisions based on their interpretation of their various Holy scriptures, political conservatives are often bigots, warmongers, disdainful of the opinions of others, bent on dominating others and believe that only certain elites – they – are entitled to knowledge. It is not uncommon to see political conservatives forego moral and ethical values just in order to prevent any alteration of their barbaric ideas. Fascist Benito Mussolini, communist Adolf Hitler, republican George Walker Bush, Islamic Osama bin Laden, malitian Timothy McVeigh, war propagandist Rush Limbaugh and hate instigator Mark Levine were and are all conservatives.
The next time someone tells you he/she is conservative, do yourself a favor and at least ask for an adjective. I am a Christian religious conservative.

Well, hell, if xfahctor says that this discussion has already been deleted twice why should I waste my time responding...other than the fact that I can't help myself and don't need the pennies anyway.
I guess this explains why I'm a moderate. Not a member of the left and not one of the far righ wackjobs you just described.

Spalladino, Xfahctor is correct. This is the third time that I have posted this particular discussion which I found to be very appropriate.

And Spalladino, did you know that it is almost impossible to be a decent person and belong to any political party with rigid ideas? Humans are naturally beings of reason, and are aware that there are times when a situation could be so unique that one is bound to bend a rule to the left or right to address the situation. Rigid political ideas are not human friendly.

I hesitate to respond to this, because this discusion of yours has already been deleted twice hasn't it? While I admire your tenacity, the admins might not. Anyway, I am going to wait to see if this discusion (and your account) stick around before I respond fully, I have a lot to say on it and I don't want to waste all that typing on something that will just be deleted.

I am going to assume based on past complaints that were posted in the responses, it was the seemingly inflamitory generalized attack on political conservatives.
*shrug* I dunno....silly, generalizing, and totaly void in context yes, inflamitory....not to me anyways. But hey, here we are again. Lets see what happens here.

You are correct that this discussion was an outright attack on political conservatism. But again, if you have been paying attention to my discussions and responses regarding this matter, then you ought to know by now that I am at odds with political conservatives for the simple fact that, I do not appreciate a bunch of hoodlums and barbarians presenting themselves as the party for godly folks when all they are concerned about is suppressing and dominating decent people!

...what does it mean when someone says all those of a certain group are bigots?

Oh, I am sure that you can look up the word bigot in any dictionary.

I truly believe I'm fiscally and politically conservative... I believe in following the constitution, limited government and all citizens should have the right to their own prosperity... I am a penny pincher and I don't expect anyone else to pay my way. I don't agree at all with your definition of political conservatism as racism and segregation as always been well rooted in the progressive and democrat movements. We see with those in control in Washington today many bigoted and disdainful opinions directed at those who oppose their methods and policies, even know polls show that their actions are not the favor of the majority of American citizens. However that does go both ways because whatever your political group you choose to label yourself as everyone is human and so flawed as such. How you can put Fascist and communist in the same line with Mark Levin and Rush Limbaugh is beyond me and I question your knowledge on world history. So I take it as a Christian Religious Conservative you are against Gay right, Gay marriage and and believe they will all go to hell... as that is the stereotype of a Christian Religious Conservative as I have heard it told to me when I say I'm a conservative.

Missybal, I am of the opinion that people will go to hell because they failed to accept their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and would not repent of their evil ways.
As per putting Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levine, Mussolini and Hitler: I am simply informing you that these people were and are all conservatives. I have given you the most direct definition of conservatism.

Gee, how long did it take for the other posts to get deleted...lol? Here goes anyway...I've been saying for a long time that question should be asked of all of those who respond to the various opinion polls that show more Americans identify themselves as "conservative" than either liberal or independent. I'm really not "attacking the messenger" or claiming "sour grapes" but I truly believe many people who say they're conservative don't mean it in the same sense as our most high profile conservative politicians and other public figures.

Annie, I do not know how long it took before my previous posts were deleted. All I know is that I returned days later to check on my posted discussion, and each time the discusssion was no more! And as you can see, there is nothing appropriate about this discussion.

I consider being conservative an aspect of my social and moral beliefs, almost completely seperate from my governmental beliefs. Political conservatism is almost a misnomer. One of the problems with the way voters think in the U.S. is that the two have become intermingled as one set of beliefs.

Alas, not many of the "conservative" mainstream political party in the USA are really conservative. There is not very much difference between liberals and those who claim to be political conservatives at this point. I think true political conservatism encompasses these four ideals: Small government, right to life, respect for constitutional rights and personal responsibility.
Religious conservatism is a whole other animal. Definitions of religious conservatism are unique to each religious entity. You can't compare apples to oranges, in other words.
