Please add to the common errors in English which people in your locality often commit. 1. Fishes: Fish is the plural of fish. There is no word 'fishes'. 2. ATM machine: The 'M' of 'ATM' stands for machine and it is wrong to repeat machine after 'ATM'. Hope this discussion is useful.

One, I see often is desert and dessert. Dessert is a tasty treat that you eat after a male. Desert is a dry, arid land that is not tasty in any way. Those two getting mixed up annoy me for some reason. Also, persons is another one. Person is one. People is many. Using persons is just going to cause my blood pressure to boil. I know its constantly used but its constantly wrong.

And I just realized I accidentally put "male" instead of meal. Which proves my theory that if you criticize mistakes, it is more likely that you are to make one yourself. Its almost inevitable.

Thanks for providing your valuable inputs to the discussion. I often noticed people making mistakes reagardig dessert and desert. Another similar mistake is loose and lose. People often replace wrong sentence for loose and lose. I am still in the learning process of English. I heard many people using peoples. I think it is wrong since people itself is plural.

hi daliaj, The common mistakes in English do creep up mostly by those people whose first language is not english and when they translate their language in to English they make mistake because like people may be singluar and plural in English it is not in their language and they would add s because their mind tells them to add s to make it plural.. my best friend would always say Hairs instead of hair and like someone said Dog is male but people use it for females too because the female dog real name means something else in slang..

You are right. English is not my frist launguage. When I talk in English, soemtimes I think in my regional language and translates to English which welcomes mistakes. I know that hair is plural, but dog is male is a new information to me. What is the name of a female dog? Also, I thought ox is male for a long time, but recently I came to know that ox can be a male or femal cow.

Regarding the "fish vs fishes" A group of fish of the same species are called 'fish'. Two or more species of fish are called 'fishes'. For example, a group of Salmon swimming together can be called a school of fish. But if one Goldfish starts swimming with the Salmon, they are called fishes. Stuff vs stuffs Stuff is already plural. So there's no need to add an 's' on it.

Thanks for providing the information regarding suff and stuffs. It is something new to me. Similary, work is plural. You have to say a lot of work and not 'a lot of works'. Also, cattle is plural. There is no word 'cattles'. Cattles means a group of animals (especially cows, buffaloes, etc.).
