Two Questions About the Acidity of Distilled Water

Greetings to all I do not want to drink city water due to the chemicals it contains, so we have a Shaklee water purifier. This purifier runs by osmosis. However, there are times the city water pressure is way too low and I buy and use distilled water. Some months ago elsewhere on the Interent, and today on myLot, I read about distilled water being acidic. The post on myLot mention a study at John Hopkins (I believe) in regard to what causes cancer, one of which being acid in our foods. Well, two questions, and if you can, respond with info good links like National Institute of Health or something like that, to support what you heard. Question 1: Is the concern about distilled water being acidic over rated in the light of the fact we ingest high acid foods anyway? Surely there are substances that we ingest that are far more acidic. Don't know why distilled water is a big problem. Question 2: Could not the acidity of distilled water be offset with a dash of sodium bicarbonate? Thanks in advance for the input!

This is very difficult question. Distilled water and water from reverse osmosis are acidic and not ideal to drink. Distillation and reverse osmosis, provides mineral free water. It removes heavy metal materials like lead, arsenic, and mercury from water and also calcium and phosphorous. It is also removing bacteria and viruses. Distillation is not removing chlorine. For drinking much better is filtered water (chlorine and chemicals absorption) or natural spring mineral water (not bottled water)

Hi polachicago. I didn't think reverse osmosis would make water acidic but I guess it could if some minerals are removed.

Where I live,in the country, the water is good.It tastes pretty good here.I have lived in a city like area before and I do notice a big difference. In the city I prefered to buy my water,it was better.I think you can tell by the taste. It had a metal taste to it so I didn't want to drink it.

Well, aye! I prefer country water too. Used to live out in the country before we came to Cambridge, MD.

I am surprised about your using distilled water. We(in India) call it mineral water where ideally the water is supposed to be extracted fron Natural Springs from the source before it gets conaminated with any other man made pollutants. The same kind of water is also manufactured in plants like Bisleri for instance who also call their highly safe driking water where the pH balance is adjusted and minerals in salutary quantities are perhaps added.

Greetings GADHISUNU , I'm curious. Why would you be surprised I use distilled water? Here, that mineral or spring water is labeled as such and is supposed to be distinct from the distilled. It costs a tad more. But I use distilled because I do not want the chemicals in city water.

I have read the discussion also and distilled water said to be as acidic. Distilled water is a product from boiling water. The H2O or water when boiled produce many free radicals. These free radicals are toxic in the body. These are wastes that can be converted to many illness or disease , and one of them is Cancer. Unlike purified water, it is product of reverse osmosis that went from 18-24 stages depending on the acidity level of water being purified. With this, there will be no free radicals left or if there is, too minimal that will not affect the body normal functions nor cause illnesses in the body. They eliminate free radicals or toxic substances in the body. I think distilled water can be a problem because if a person drink 6-8 glasses of distilled water daily, meaning he will input as many free radicals in the body. In additional to distilled water plus the other foods he eats that can contribute to high acidity level which when all added are huge stored in the body. Hence, most people consumption is water intake for the body and our body comprises 90% water composition.

Hi Genericbe. Surely the free radicals come from something other than the water itself though, since water is simply two atoms of hydrogen to one atom of oxygen. I would guess that the free radicals come from stuff in the water. Even so, is not ingesting salads with salad dressing that contains vinegar worse? Or how about some high acid foods. Unless, the point is as you have it our body is 90% water and the foods of course are absorbed differently.

Well if this is tripled distilled water, packed immediately after distillation in neutral glass bottles and sealed instantly, it is neutral , but the so called distilled water sold in gas stations used for putting in battery is nothing but rainwater collected and filterd, they have acid, no doubt.. Have a nice day ahead. Professor ‘@Bhuwan@’. .
