Who is more important? An animal or a human being?

I have been thinking of this question lately, when I learned that there was a billion people dying from hunger this year.
My dog Lola is active and healthy but a little thin as she is a young dog. So she is on extra food and vitamins. Have we considered how much we spend on our darling pets? Would we do the same for a human being?
I know of a site that could help some.
http://www.freerice.com/
is a site sponsored by the United Nations World Food Programme. There are some games (language, maths, chemistry and so on) in which, for every word you answer right, they give 10 grains of rice to help out with hunger. I also discovered there a toolbar that works better as they give 2500 grains of rice for 5 searches on the net. I use it instead of Google now.
I know that with a billion hungry people what I do is nothing. But at that site I have also read that it does help as many people are putting their grain of sand as I am. I always have in mind those children with their swollen tummies and their incapacity to shoo away flies from the wounds on their faces.
Could you check the link I put, please? I also know that my dog has a better life than those children. We could have been them. I am sorry. I beg you to check this site. Just one day will help, one click will help, let´s join hands.
Take care and let´s help. Let 2010 be the year when we though of the rest of the world.

Wow, I'm also shocked by your response. Although you are of course entitled to your opinion. Might I hazard a guess that you don't have any children, and have never had a close relative who is dying? I might be completely wrong and out of order here, but I can say that from my own personal experience, much as I love animals, once I'd had these life experiences my priorities on this subject changed drastically.

A human being is more important here in our place. Animals can eat human beings left over while the human being's could not eat the animal's food or leftovers. Although those wealthy ones could afford their pets food and everything and they won't fed their pets with leftovers but if they have something for their pets for sure they have something more for human beings. Both are important but human beings are prioritized, it's just depend to an individual on how he would take it.

I just wanted to point out in my post that we can help a billion human beings who are starving. Most of them will die if we don´t help and other famished people will take their place. It´s like a hooro movie. And we can help.

I believe that animals and humans are equally as important. When you take in an animal as a companion, though, you have to consider that you are now responsible for that life, as you might be for your kids or otherwise. They need to eat, they need to be bathed. Some need special foods, some need regular or sporadic medication. But their life is your responsibility. Free rice is a great site, and it helps build or maintain your basic knowledge.

I agree with you and I love my Lola (my dog). I was only trying to focus the attention of other mylotters on free rice. com. Mylot has done a lot for each of us, bringing together a lot of people from different cultures, countries and backgroungds. Let´s try to help a bit those of us who not only don´t have a laptop or a personal computer but they lack a glass of decent water and a piece of bread.

Human being has equal right with animal? Ideally it should be equal, but human has more power and intelligence than animals so there are a lot of unfair things lie on animals.

There is a lot of unfairness between human beings too. That´s why I posted this, with the hope that each of us worked at free rice a couple of minutes each day. I am hungry right now. I just had a cup of coffee and milk for breakfast and wanted to come to the computer so I said I´d eat later. I have bread, fruit, butter, homemade apricot jam, cheese, avocados and cooked chicken if I want a chicken sandwich. It is ABSOLUTLY UNFAIR that other people are starving. It´s a shame.
I work every day at the rice site, I downloaded the toolbar and I´m sharing the link with all of you. Please, let´s help.
My dog, by the way, lives a life of leisure. And she is loved by me and my younger grandchildren come to play with her.
Take care!

For me I feel that both should be important, although obviously humans are hierachical creatures so give themselves special status and put themselves at the top. The problem with this is that quite often there is then some people who will decide that if only humans are special then there are some people who aren't really human or even aren't really people! Black people aren't really people, jewish people aren't really people and so on and so on.
I was appaled at some of the coverage of the hobbit people, (they discovered old skeletons of another branch of humanity that lived less than 1000 years ago on this planet with the rest of us) where some reports reffered to these people as "it", despite the fact they were another branch of humanity. Made me kind of glad that they didn't find any living "hobbit people" can you imagine their attitude to them if they are already hypothetically reffering to them as it?
With all that in mind there is obviously a hierarchy imposed on humanity in different places as you hint at in your posting. Some people are considered to be worth more based on where they live, and their inherited status thereof. Ironically I find it is because people act so much like animals, like their monkey primate history, that these things come about. So in a way people should be better than animals but often aren't and it could be argued that they act more poorly because they have the ability to rise above their primate background and yet they don't.
I could say a lot more but I worry about the wear and tear on my keyboard. ;)

Hi,
It is impossible to answer your post at lenght although I found it very interesting.
To tell you the truth, what I had in mind when I posted this was the billion people (mostly children) who are starving. A long time ago, when I was studying at the university, one of the questions in my oral exam was that if I wanted to live in the Greece of Aristotle. I said I would have to change some things before. To ancient greeks I would not have had a soul. I am a woman and of "barbarian" blood.
Please, check if you can the free rice link I put. We may not be the best of species but let´s try to help a bit.
Take care!

I think every human being should love animals, plants and other human beings. I firmly believe that love is the word that will help us survive. This post was only to point out how we could help a billion people who are starving (mainly children). It does not take much of our time and if you can´t spare your time, you can download the toolbar and search through that.
Take care!

Hi marguicha, Even i feel that their are many people who are hungry and on the other side people spending money on their leisure - party, makeup,
Animal have to right to eat so if you are giving him a shelter and food its fine, but if we are spending money on which we can avoid then we have to think. You are right, lets 2010 be a perfect year. enjoy- save the world

Thanks for your answer. With this site I talk about, we can help without having to give up any of our luxuries. A few minutes of our time a day and downloading a toolbar to search through that is all it´s needed.
Take care!

When I was younger (and free and single, lol!) I used to be a person who was very into animal rights, and if you asked me I would say that an animal's life is just as important as a person's. And I still believe that to some extent; who are we to put a value on lives and compare them? Life is life, no?
But since I've seen relatives and friends suffer from horrible illnesses, lost people close to me, and have had a child of my own I know that the people close to me are much more important than any animal, and I know that if I had a pet (much as I'd love it and consider it a member of my family) if it came to choosing between the pet and the human I'd go for my mother/brother/sister/cousin/auntie/gran any time.
Also, the kind of technology that allows things like animal embryos to be used to advance medical science, is something that I would have been strongly against in the 'olden days'. But if this could help one of my relatives be cured from a progressive disorder that's ruining their life, then I would definitely support it in a heartbeat.
Yes, the 'old me' would think that the 'new me' very heartless, but the 'new me' has important life experience that the 'old me' didn't have. It's amazing how your priorities change over the years and you realise what's important in life.

Which is more important, an animal or a person? That's a difficult question for a number of reasons, and it also depends on how you look at the question. On an individual basis you can ask yourself if your dog is more important that a serial murderer. I would say yes, that's just my opinion.
If you generalize the question and ask if people as a whole are more important than animals as a whole...I really can't answer that. Scientists are learning that animals communicate, love, use tools, learn, many nurture their young, a few exibit signs of doing artwork and respond to music. Just because they can't speak a language that we understand, doesn't mean they don't understand the concept of language. I've had to revert to spelling certain words in front of my dog because she knows exactly what they mean. Yet I don't understand her words.
There is also religious differences in how one or the other is preceived. Christians believe that we are the highest life form. Other religions believe in reincarnation, where beings are reborn into other lifeforms and their way wo enlightenment. If we have reincarnated up to being people...then where do those serial murderers fit in?
Then you have to look at evolution. We as humans are still evolving. Our brains have gotten bigger, our jaws have gotten smaller (that's why there isn't room for wisdom teeth), and eventually we're supposed to lose our big toes. On the other hand, horseshoe crabs have not changed on iota for millions of years. I've read articles that predict that long after people are gone from the earth that ants will rule.
So in light of your questions...what is the correct answer?

It's good that you bring up that site periodically for people who haven't seen it yet. I still visit it daily from when I saw your first post almost a year ago. I also saw your post about it in the discussion just prior to this one, and I chose not to respond because I already use the site, and a very worthy one it is too.
This discussion though was set by the title you assigned to it, asking which was more important, animals or human beings. I responded to the question instead of the free rice information because that has been already brought up more than once.
I thought it was a really good discussion, sorry if I missed your intent.

I catdla,
I was just thinking of how well we treat our pets anf how horrifying is that a billion human beings (children mostly) are starving. You are right, of course, about the importance of every animal and every plant in the earth. It´s all part of a chain that should not be broken. I wasn´t goint to get in a talk about spirituality and different religions here either although you are right.
I only wanted to tell about this site where you can donate free rice at no expense except your time. I tried to make another post about it and not many people answered. I´m just trying to hold mylotter´s attention about a site where we can work for 5 min a day.
Take care!

I am agreeing with a fellow mylotter, we are animals. We are mammals, just like cats and dogs.
Here is another comparison, if we neglect a human being, where I come from, you get charged. If we neglect and animal, we get charged.
Both animals and humans are equal although an adult have more of choice than a child or animal.
The children you speak of did not have the choice to live in that way of life. I don't want to sound cruel or nasty, but their parents could assist to make their own child's life better as much as possible. Their government could do something more to improve their way of life. It just takes small steps but it is possible.
I had been thinking about situations like this and hearing those programs to sponcer a child, but I would feel that it is not enough just to send money to these organisations to improve the quality of the child's life. How do I know that the money I spend goes to the child I am sponcering. I would rather do one better if I was to sponcer a child. I would want to bring the child home, raise the child, educate the child, and then when the child is old enough, the child could choose to return to their home land with their education, so they may teach other children, or assist other adults to improve their way of life.
But one thing I can say is, I have seen stories, although it does break my heart, but I admire their struggle to survive. In that area, they are richer in their passion to survive in comparison to me. They will do any work to just get a small meal on the table each day. They don't live in the houses that we do. They know, understand, and appreciate hard work. We on the other hand take things for granted like electricity, internet, and more. If I was to go and live over there, I would have no knowledge of how to survive in their conditions, which makes me poor.

Hi friend.
In parts of the world where natural contitions are inhuman (like spoiled water or very poor land) it´s very hard to survive. I love every kind of life. And I don´t only think of animals, but I also wonder at the beauty of the vegetal Kingdom. I was only trying to tell my friends here about this free rice site. I help by just searching the web through their toolbar. I can help further by spanding a little time plying any of the games there. I was shocked when I read that a billion people (mainly childre) were dying of hunger. Let´s help!

Hi Marguicha, Both are important to me—people and animals. They both deserve to be taken cared of and loved. People look after the animals and animals in their own simple and unique way provide assistance to people to live and survive. Living is tough—but we can always counteract difficulties and trials. Both the people and animals were created to be supplementing and complimenting with each other. So, both are important to me.

I agree with you. Both are important (and necessary). But what I wanted to promote was to check this free rice site that can help give out food to starving people with just a few minutes of our time or by searching the web through their toolbar. For 5 searches (I do a lot more than that daily) they give 2500 grains of rice.

Both human and animal kind are important. Both have lives. I have every sympathy and compassion to everything and everyone in this planet.I cannot say that one is on top of the other but, God has created both in a beautiful way that we can understand that THE HUMAN PERSON HAS A GREAT ROLE TO TAKE IN THIS PLANET,and that is to have dominion over the little and big creatures...the flora and the fauna, the animals.WE COME BLESSED TO HAVE the intellect and the freewill. We are of higher value in terms of making things happen.THE thing that i want to point out is that we, as humans should be able to take care of the animals... of everything in this complicated world. IF hunger and war have been a great problem to all of us, then WE ALL ARE RESPONSIBLE TO GIVE solutions to every problem there is.HUMANS CO-EXIST WITH EVERYTHING we see in this world.

Of course human beings are far more important than animals. this earth and everything in it, including animals are created by God for man. Everything that we see in this physical world are there for our physical sustenance, maintenance and enjoyment. With all the gifts given to mankind there lies a corresponding responsibility to take good care of the earth and all creation, including animals. But unfortunately, man in general failed to take good and prepare care of the earth.

I think that animals are important just as much as humans and they should get equal help when needed.
