I Literally DO Feel Your Pain!

Yes, maybe Clinton was feeling our pain--though I doubt it, since so much that he did hurt us...but never mind. This isn't about pandering politicians, but about how some folks' brains operate!
Scientists have discovered that in some people, at least, when they perceive pain, they literally feel actual pain! Of course, pain is never where the actual injury occurs, but in the brain, which then informs us of the injury's location.
With that abstract in mind, it comes as no surprise to me that when I see someone take a hard blow, I literally perceive pain! I always assumed everyone did this, & was surprised to discovered this isn't so! But however the scientists did it, they've managed to isolate the area of the brain that has this ability, & have found that it's not universal...which might explain people who can laugh while they pummel someone senseless...maybe.
I do know I can't even watch videos of people crashing their bikes, or getting hit in the groin by a pinata banging tot on those "funny" videos TV shows, as those whammy shots have me doubling over in pain!
Just by the way, I don't feel the pain in the same spots as someone I'm watching get hit--but in various parts of myself. No matter what section of their anatomy is abused, I feel it in other spots. Sometimes the groin, other times the spine, sometimes my chest--but always visceral!
Does this happen to you? What do you make of this (whether or not it happens to you)? Would you change it if you could?

Not the way you are experiencing it but a different kind of a reaction - I get palpitations when I see someone suffer, tears role down my eyes and am terribly depressed. Yours must be a unique situation may be an induced one and just may be we could all experience it if we also tried.

Hi Maggie
No it does not happen to me but I can imagine the Pain
But I have heard this before that a certain part of the Brain has the pain and points to where the Injury is
I just could never understand how it works though because surely if you sit there and say well it is only brain pointing to it so it is not really hurting, why does the Pain not go away???

Well , some times I feel the pain when I say this to some one that I can feel . But some times I just say these words because its formality . Feeling pain of others is very emotional thing , which can't come without being attach with that particular person ...
Thanks ...:)

I had a discussion here some time back about empathy. It wasn't about physical pain though. It was about empathizing with other people's emotions and whether a person could actually feel somebody's emotional pain or whether they could just relate to it intellectually. A lot of people did say that they could actually feel it. Anyway, far as physical pain, I have no doubt that kind of empathy exists. The world is stranger than we know.

I share in people's back pain. That's enough, thank you.
Did you know that pain relievers work on emotional pain, too?

I can somewhat understand what you are saying, I am very empathic, which means I can feel other peoples feelings, usually emotions, but sometimes, I can even feel their physical pain, although not to the extend that you are talking about. It is interesting when you are that 'in tune' with another person. Would I change it? Sometimes I used to wish I could but the older I get, the more accepting I become of myself and others. This was a very interesting topic.
