Bill Gates was not the person who invented Internet. Actually, internet is NOT invented by a single person. Internet is a group of large and small networks connected to eachother. It is often called network of all networks. Several small networks called Local Area Networks(LAN) combines to form a large network Wide Area Network(WAN) and WAN's form Metropolitan Area Network and a network of LAN, WAN and MAN forms our Internet.
The origin of network named ARPANET was started in the US Defence Department in 60's. Initially 4 computers within the US Defense was connected eachother. Later more computers are added to this network and made it more wider network. But public were not allowed to access this network. Later, Internet came into form and more countries are added to form the network.
Tim Berners Lee invented the World Wide Web(www) and Vinton Cerf is known as the father of Internet.

It was invented by the U.S. military during the cold war with Soviet Union so in case of sudden nuclear attack and massive destruction, they still will be able to communicate with each other from remote locations about vital information, unaffected by the nuke attack.

As i know, internet was invented coincidentally when the cold war occur. You can easily find the details history from wikipedia. I think almost every internet lesson books also have such information, but of course not on an expert internet lesson books. Just find it freely on the internet and you will see that it was totally different with the internet in our days now. The internet at the beginning was developing for warring purposes. Have a nice day and happy mylotting.

Well, if I remember correctly it wasn't Bill Gates (lol) but it wasn't a single person. The military needed a way to communicate and it was something like a primitive internet. Then it went public and it turned into what it is today, I guess. . .
A few people who may have had something to do with it would be Joseph Carl Robnett Licklider, Leonard Kleinrock, Paul Baran, some other people. But I just pulled these names off the internet. Ironic, in a way.

Not sure exactly who is credited with the invention of the internet but I can tell it was originally designed and a means for military personnel and scientists to communicate large volumes of information to each other while being separated by great distances. In the very early years of the what is now the modern day internet it was primarily used by those scientists and other scholars for communication and research amongst eachother.
