There are times when you're in church and you just can't fight falling asleep. There's just something inside there that makes you feel very sleepy. Maybe it's the lights, the sound of the microphone on those big speakers, or even the devil. I always try real hard to fight it off. I've tried biting my tongue, pinching myself, listening to the sermon.. but nothing seems to work. I know it's wrong and God will smite me for sleeping in the church but He knows I'm trying not to.

I used to be in a Catholic Church choir. I would have to sing in the Saturday evening mass and I would have to sing for two of the morning masses. It was horrible. I had to find every way possible to keep myself awake and it was tough. Thinking back on it, the way I did it was drinking water and whatever would keep me awake. If you are tired, there really is no way to stay awake in church.

One factor makes you sleepy in the church and that is how the priest delivered the gospel since you can't be sleepy hearing the songs. I recommend ask for a schedule of masses and ask whose priest was assigned and chose the funny type who would delivered the mass brightly in funny mode. In that way, i'm sure you won't be sleeping at all. Another solution is chewing a candy.

Maybe you should try coffee or one of those five hour energy things. I drove for twenty two hours straight by drinking a bunch of five hour energy. Or you could go to a pentacostal chruch. It is very loud with a lot of speaking in tounges and rolling around on the floor and jumping up and down with yelling. Even if you don't get into it you will be entertained a lot more than some boring guy droning on into a microphone. (I am totally joking don't be offended).
I don't think God is going to smite you for sleeping in church. Maybe He is trying to talk to you because He knows more about Himself than any preacher. Maybe you should take a break from church and ask God what HE wants from you. Obviously you are not being inspired or even worshiping God if you are passed out, so perhaps something needs to change. Do you even agree with the preachors at your church?

I think its a combination of things that happen. For me it if the Priest has a monatone voice with an uninteresting sermon. If its too cold or too hot that will put me to sleep. Of course the big one would be if I didn't get enough sleep the night before.

Yeah, that really happens in my part especially if the priest sermons or tone of voice is boring. No matter how attentive I was, still the urge of sleepiness is there. But when we have a new priest, then things have started to change. A lively mass is much better than the previous ones. Children's too are more lively than before. Our old priest doesn't want children running errands on front while conducting a mass, but the new one doesn't mind at all. He said that children should be teach to see the church as a place to learn and be happy with God. That is why the congregation had doubled during his stay on our church and was never been so lively and I see no traces of the devil running around.

well I don't believe in religion. just my opinion not hear to knock it, everyone has right to their opinion, anyways. maybe you could make sure you get enough sleep at night. for god smiting you, I doubt he would, just keep you faith strong and I don't see why you would get smite. he should understand how hard life can get and is getting into. maybe if you are worried so much you could study more at home to make up what you missed. maybe have your kids or your mate help you stay awake or a friend. I doubt you are doing it on purpose. good luck with that.

If your belief is not strong enough to help you to fight over the sleep, I think that you should quit the church. At least, it can show your minimal respect to the others inside. God doesn't find fault with you if he know you're just a weak man, but having a fake behavior is like a sin.

It is not easy to stay awake in chruch especially when you are tired. Mostly, I go to church early morning. I get up early in the morning by setting an alarm. So, normally I feel sleepy at church and sleep well during the priest's speech. You can take care of a few things to avoid sleeping in church. Find a place near the altar (front portion). Use the holy mass book and follow it.

Hi Nocturn98,
The problem is not just how to stay awake but how not to feel sleepy. My children and I usually attend the 9:30 a.m. mass on Sundays. It is the most comfortable time for all of us -- not too early neither too late. We do not hurry waking up unlike in the past where we have to wake up so early to attend the 7:00 a.m. mass.
How not to feel sleepy? --- no magic formula there. We need to sleep early the night before to wake up fresh and rested. When in church, position yourself in an area where there is enough air or where the electric fans are. This will make you comfortable throughout the mass. The warmth of the church with so many people really makes you tired, bored and sleepy. And lastly, I chose the 9:30 a.m. mass because the choir is lively and they sing well. Their songs will not lull you to sleep, lol. It helps a lot to choose a mass schedule with the good choir. They have good accompaniment, too.
